Where do you see the world in 50 years?

Shit, if you asked that question 50 years ago, would people realise all their futuristic fantasies could actually become true? Computers, tv's, traffic jams, high tech gadgets, terrorism, dishwashing machines, globalism, a 24 hour economy. They thought of it, and we've got it.

Think of that, and then say life won't be different 50 years from now.

It's evident, looking back at the past few years you'll see how much quicker things have changed everywhere around us. That quadratic change is looking like a trend if you ask me. So..? Not only will the technical possibilities prove themselves beyond imagination; life on a whole will be extremely different, as a result of the developments of the last so many years.

Somehow this keeps being brought up at the dinner table: kids grow up differently now. When I was little, I always had my mom at home waiting for me to return from school. I went home during the lunch break, and then again directly after school. Parents now don't have the time to spend on their kids: they've got full time jobs, because they want to fully live up to today's standards of life. The kids stay at school during the lunch break, and after school they'll have to wait for their parents to pick them up some hours later. When they're at home, they'll be watching tv or playing video games all the time.

Allow me to bring some psychology into this, as Sigmund Freud's analysis of the psychosexual development perfectly displays the problems that come from a lack of parent-figures. In his development, a person goes through five stages in search of fulfillment. Parents fulfill a vital role in each of these phases, especially up until the age of 12. Children who do not fully go through these stages, will end up having problems later on in their life. This plays a huge part in whether someone will start smoking later on in life, or how well they'll be able to commit to others, enter relationships, etc. The whole theory is recommended reading; you can find an introduction on Wikipedia:

With that being said... Children who are 'submitted' to the tv instead of their parents, are bound to experience trouble later on in their social life. It's already happening, and it'll only get worse. The amount of children with developmental disorders is rising sky high. Sooner or later, people will be anti-social beings. Capitalism is pushing our animal instincts, and it's like we don't know any better. That's what's happening in the next 50 years.

Now there's no reason to get upset after all. In fact if you're a conservative thinker you might, but there's no merit in it. Our global culture leads us into that direction, and unless opinions and visions change on a large scale, nothing will stop this from happening. But should we care? Man is strong enough to survive nonetheless. We'll find a way to adapt to these new conditions, I'm sure. Who says a social world is vital anyway?
