Dueces 'N Trayz ... Should Be Considered a Classic
« on: July 14, 2001, 06:42:06 PM »
I know the release is not for another two weeks, but after listening to this album, I really think it is one of the best albums since 2001. There are too many elements in this album that raise it above any other. First off the production is excellent. Some of these songs are perfected by Battlecat, Fred Wreck and
Hi-Tek. They all add a perfect combination that makes it feel like one full complete album. It doesn't give you that feeling that this album needs fillers, the production is absolutely perfect. The song Late Night, really makes you think you are riding around during the night. Next, the contents in the song are far and beyond most of the content you hear in rap nowadays. Songs like Friends, Late Night and I dont know just really get you thinking about what life is really about. This album may not hit every average hip hop listener, but it should. When you think about classic albums, you think about Illmatic, Doggystyle, Chronic, All Eyez On Me and others, but this album should be in there in my opinion. If it isn't considered a classic, it definetly should be considered one of the best albums from the West... this album is just far and beyond their premiere and most other albums given a hi-status grade.

this album is in no way a classic.  Good album?  it would have been if that George Clinton imposter wasn't all over it.  Classic album?  Hell fuckin no.  Let me say this, since about 1997, there have been VERY FEW albums that were good, because rap has become so saturated by Puffy.  These days, you have people like Nelly going 3/4 plat, that's how bad the rap game is.  A classic album is an album that breaks new ground.  Does this album break new ground?  No.  "The Chronic" was the birth of G-Funk.  "All eyez on me" first double album by a solo artist.  "Doggystyle" sold the most amount of records for a rap record at the time.  "Killuminatti: The 7 Day Theory" first time a rapper has released 2 number one, platinum albums in the same year.  Since 1998, there have been very few good albums released.  The only westcoast albums that were good were Bad Azz's 1st album, Streetz iz a mutha, Chronic 2000, No Limit Top Dogg, Still I Rise, RAW, Dillinger and Young Gotti, Too Gangsta for Radio, Nonfiction, Dogg Pound 2002, and Rythm-al-ism.  The new Eastsidaz album is no where near these albums.  The first Eastsidaz was wack cuz of the production.  There were about 4 songs that were listenable.  This album the beats are a lot better, but the George Clinton wannabe spoils the album with his wack imitation of the REAL George Clinton.  To say this album is a classic is ridiculous.  If you compare it to the shit on the radio, yea, it's better.  But to call it a classic is insulting.

Yeah I feel you on that... you're right

I guess we'll only know if Duces and Trays is a classic if we're still banging it in 5,6,7 years time
