Perfecting the Chronic (2001)
« on: November 30, 2007, 01:57:51 PM »
I almost feel bad for doing this. Dr. Dre is such a well known perfectionist that I kinda feel dumb for trying to correct him, but oh well I'll give it a try. As I mentioned about a week ago I started breaking out all my classic West Coast albums, including 2001. As I was listening, it hit me for the first time that the 2nd half of this album had hella fillers! So I put on my Dre googles and saw what adjustments I would make if I had the chance to....

Original tracklist
1.   Lolo (Intro) - (featuring Xzibit/Tray-Dee)
2.   The Watcher
3.   Fuck You - (featuring Devin/Snoop Dogg)
4.   Still D.R.E. - (featuring Snoop Dogg)
5.   Big Ego's - (featuring Hittman)
6.   Xxplosive - (featuring Hittman/Kurupt/Nate Dogg/Six-Two)
7.   What's The Difference - (featuring Eminem/Xzibit)
8.   Bar One - (featuring Traci Nelson/Ms Roq/Eddie Griffin)
9.   Light Speed - (featuring Hittman)
10.   Forgot About Dre - (featuring Eminem)
11.   Next Episode - (featuring Snoop Dogg)
12.   Let's Get High - (featuring Hittman/Kurupt/Ms. Roq)
13.   Bitch Niggaz - (featuring Snoop Dogg/Hittman/Six-Two)
14.   The Car Bomb - (featuring Mel-Man/Charis Henry)
15.   Murder Ink - (featuring Hittman/Ms. Roq)
16.   Ed-ucation - (featuring Eddie Griffin)
17.   Some L.A. Niggaz - (featuring DeFari/Xzibit/Knoc-Turn'al/Time Bomb/King T/M.C. Ren/Kokane)
18.   Pause 4 Porno - (featuring Jake Steed)
19.   Housewife - (featuring Kurupt/Hittman)
20.   Ackrite - (featuring Hittman)
21.   Bang Bang - (featuring Knoc-Turn'al/Hittman)
22.   Message, The - (featuring Mary J. Blige/Rell)

Fillers that I'd remove

8.   Bar One - (featuring Traci Nelson/Ms Roq/Eddie Griffin)
^ I just hate skits, especially ones that serve no purpose.

9.   Light Speed - (featuring Hittman)
^ I don't really have a problem with this song, but I needed to remove it to make room. Plus I recall Dre saying that this song was really his commercial for his "Chronic Iced Tea" drink (which never came out)

14.   The Car Bomb - (featuring Mel-Man/Charis Henry)
^ "Don't even waiste MY time" - Doug Heffernan

15.   Murder Ink - (featuring Hittman/Ms. Roq)
^ What the fuck is this? I see why I always skipped this song.

16.   Ed-ucation - (featuring Eddie Griffin)
^ Its a damn shame that this instrumental wasn't on the 2001 Instrumental album.

18.   Pause 4 Porno - (featuring Jake Steed)
^ I enjoy watching porn, not listening to it

Songs that I'd add

The Game Don't Wait Remix (feat. Warren G, Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg, Xzibit)
^ This song was hot but it was never officially released! Plus we were all curious as to why Warren G wasn't on the album. So let's slip this in place of that 14-15-16 filler spot.

Hello (feat. Ice Cube, Mc Ren)
^ My biggest problem with 2001 is and ever was that Cube wasn't on it! I'm gonna put this in place of "Light Speed" so it'll flow with the theme of the album getting darker towards the middle but not too dark yet.

Final Product
01 - Lolo (Intro) (feat. Xzibit, Tray-Dee)
02 - The Watcher
03 - Fuck You (feat. Devin the Dude, Snoop Dogg)
04 - Still D.R.E. (feat. Snoop Dogg)
05 - Big Ego's (feat. Hittman)
06 - Xxplosive (feat. Hittman, Kurupt, Nate Dogg, Six-Two)
07 - What's The Difference (feat. Xzibit, Eminem)
08 - Hello (feat. Ice Cube, Mc Ren)
09 - Forgot About Dre (feat. Eminem)
10 - Next Episode (feat. Snoop Dogg)
11 - Let's Get High (feat. Hittman, Kurupt, Ms. Roq)
12 - Bitch Niggaz  (feat. Snoop Dogg, Six-Two, Hittman)
13 - The Game Don't Wait Remix (feat. Warren G, Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg, Xzibit)
14 - Some L.A. Niggaz (feat. Mc Ren, Time Bomb, King T, Knoc-Turn'Al, Kokane, Hittman, Xzibit, Defari)
15 - Housewife (feat. Kurupt, Hittman)
16 - Ackrite (feat. Hittman)
17 - Bang Bang (feat. Knoc-Turn'al, Hittman)
18 - The Message (feat. Mary J. Blige, Rell)

^ 18 songs, all bangers, no fillers, all of our needs met.

What are you talking about? Ed-ucation was a hilarious (if very offensive) skit.

Murder ink is a classic track .. one of the best on that joint ..

but co-sign on removing the skits and replacing them with the tracks you mentioned ..

It's a classic album to me so I would not change anything. Besides all the leftovers from that album made other rappers albums so it created alot of hits for other artists (Topp Dogg, Restless, Marshall Mathers LP, etc)

Thats doesn't always equal a good thing my dude. Keep in mind Snoop didn't put "Hoodtrap", "Pop Yo Colla", "When I Wake Up in the Mornin", "Fathers Day" and most importantly "No Backtrackin" on "Tha Last Meal" but he managed to find room for "Snoop Dogg (What's My Name Part 2)", "I Can't Swim", "Loosen Control", and "Back Up Off Me".

Yeah that is Snoop though. Dre at least allowed the artists to use the tracks that he felt he did not want on 2001. Bitch Please, Bucc Em, Just Dippin, Oh No on Restless, and I forgot the name of the track that had Em, RBX and Sticky Fingaz on it.
