Dre, DETOX and the revolutionary 5.1 sound
« on: June 29, 2001, 09:17:44 PM »
i have heard the future and it is 5.1 digital music. and like usual dre is gonna be at the forefront of this musical innovation and will help to push sonic boundaries to places not yet reached. a few months ago (before dre talked about it) i talked to you about these new musical formats. it comes in 2 different forms. dvd-audio and superaudio compact disc (sacd). right now if dre released a recording in 5.1 sound you would not be able to listen to it on your regular cd players. you must have a dvd audio or sacd player and you must have a compatible receiver, along with the many correct connections. regular cd players cannot play these 5.1 discs. and even if they could you could not hear get the 5.1 sound cause your equipment would not be compatible. for those who don't know what 5.1 sound is it consists of this: the 5 means having 2 front speakers, 1 center speaker and 2 surround speakers. the 1 is referring to a subwoofer. if anyone is thinking about buying either of these 2 technologies i would advise you to wait for a while. the two formats are still battling each other to be the prefered format. right now dvd-audio is ahead in terms of getting backed by the most record companies. but many experts, including myself think that sacd is better. but most people probably could not tell the difference. both of these formats are available but the discs released are very minimal. there are no rap releases yet and small amounts of others. so there are a lot of things to be straightened out.my advice would be to wait for another year and the picture should be much clearer. late 2002 and early 2003 is the projeted time frame for this new technology to blow up and be ready to be used correctly. the engineers still developing this format are just getting to figure out the possiblities.and since this technology is so new most producers and mixers will have to work with this a while before they can perfect it. i have heard a lot of discs and there is a huge room for improvement. the 5.1 sound is incredible, even in these early stages. after only just recently heard this sound experience (thanks to someone i know.lol.) dre is just starting to learn about it and work with it. by the time detox is being finished the sonic possiblites of 5.1 digital music will have started to be realized.one more thing about the format.there is enough disc space on these discs to include the album, some remixes, some documentaries and some music videos. the possiblites are endless. if anyone does have dvd audio i suggest you buy metallica's black album (yeah we bump rock music too)to get the best example i've heard of 5.1 so far. right now its late saturday night and i'm still working in the lab instead of relaxing and hangin out.i'm tired and i got a few more things to "rap"up. i'll post a reply tommorrow and detail our "special" plans for the 5.1 sound. talk to you tommorrow.

wow that's crazy sounds tight

but i got a question? will those new players be able to play regular cd's too cuz i got a grip of cd's and that would be a shame if i couldn't play them anymore and had to replace them all with new 5.1's or have 2 stereos in my room (limited space)

also how much do you think they'll cost cuz somthing like that sounds like they'd cost like a 1,000 bucks for a player with dvd capabilities and that many speakers

anyways mellow thanks for the info , and isn't it friday or are you over in another country??

oh yeah i've been wondering about this question for YEAAAAAAARS now, i've been a rock fan for quite some time now and when dre dropped the aftermath compilation he did a david bowie cover of Fame with RC and King T, i was just wondering since it's kinda obvious now that dre listens to rock music as well is dre going to sign any rock bands or produce any besides no doubt? i heard a rumor he was going to produce somthing for KoRn with mc ren and cube on it is that true?

I don't know but he might record an album with Trent Reznor.
"Fame" is dope as hell ! His version is totally different from the original one...Dre is definitively not Puff Daddy.

no it wont, it'd be like the same cost as a dvd... so like $20 or $25...actually proly cheaper cuz by the time this technology will be in full force the market for it will be big and it'll be cheap.. e.g. back in the day dvds used to be like $35 each now they've dropped considerably..

i've read some of your questions and i'll try to answer them all. now i know- your regular dvd player will not play dvd-audio or sacd discs. you must have a dvd-audio or sacd player and a receiver that has all the necessary inputs and is compatible with the format. so you have the speaker set up and the big screen tv but you still have to buy some more equipment. your close but still a couple thousand away. if you have a brand new receiver just put on the market within the last year you may have a compatible receiver. but you still have to buy the dvd audio or sacd player.
right now the cd prices in this format are 20 to 25 dollars and like fc said the prices will come down as these formats become more widely used.
the prices for the equpment are much more expensive. sacd players are anywhere from 700 to 2000 dollars. dvd audio players range from 400 to 2500. receivers that have the capabilites will cost from 700 to 3000. and if you want the speaker setup you need to spend more money. if you want a big screen tv you have to spend thousands more. so this is a very expensive set up. i have spent a lot of money to come up with my setup. but i have the funds to change whenever the technology changes down the road. right now i have a mini movie theatre. i have a 80 inch 16:9 tv. i have a 13 speaker set up, theatre seats and i never go see movies. if i get blown out of the back of the theatre at least its in my own house. i'm not much into material thngs but i do like to spend money on state of the art music and movie setups.
for everyone else, since a lot of things are being ironed out and the technologies of the equiptment will probably go through more changes and advancements i would wait at least a year to spend money. plus things will be much cheaper in a year or two.
big jake - these dvd audio or sacd players will play all of your regular cd's so take a sigh of relief. and regular cd's are not going away. every release will still be available in reguar cd format for many many years ahead. but in a few years most releases will be available in the dvd audio and sacd format.
stay tuned for "detox" 5.1 plans.

i have to apologize for my last post.  i went into detail the expensive set up i had. it was uncalled for as i know most of you do not and may never have the funds to buy this type of stuff. whenever i've posted i've prided myself in not boasting about my wealth and my material things. thats not what i'm about at all. i like having nice things but they don't mean anything to me. i've come from very little to doing very well for myself, but i overstepped by boundaries by talking about things that were disrespectful and distasteful, even though i didn't mean anything by it. so i'm sorry. it won't happen again.
as far as rock n roll dre has been looking for a black rock band for years but has yet to find the right guys. ice-t had the slammin rock band Body Count. dre still wants to do a rock and roll album with a signature dre sound and will someday. he's already adding rock guitar back into some of his productions and will continue to use that in his musical instrument arsenal. a dre/trent rezor album was talked about but is on the backburner so i wouldn't expect that anytime soon. dre is doing a track with no doubt. gwen loves dre so they may work more in the future.
"fame" was a cover and dre did it nicely. unlike puffy dre gives due credit to anyone whom he takes a whole song idea from. puffy jacks someone's  beat straight up, adds a slight loop and raps new lyrics to the song. like its his song. fuck that. dre used the exact same lyrics to pay tribute to david bowie and he also gave credit to david by doing an original beat.
so yes we pump rock music every once in a while. i feel sorry for people who only listen to one form of music. respect every musical category(even country and opera, which are the only 2 types of music i can't stand). don't limit yourself by listening to one type of music. you're missing out if you do. expand your mind and your tastes and you might find something that changes not only your mind but your life. experiencing as many things as you can is what life is all about. i promise my next post will focus on our plans for 5.1
