Hey Ozir, have you gotten around the 300 MB partition limit yet ?

I just went through the instructions and I think I was victorious :cow:

I have no clue about partitioning... I haven't tried it.  What's the purpose?

Gets you around the 300MB partition for applications/operating system(150-200 MB alone).

So now I can have up to 6GB of applications if I wanted too :D
You will never get this warning ever again "You're running out of disk space! Please delete etc....."

What new features will the iPhone2 have?  I thought I read something about GPS and a new program instead of Edge.  What else?

Since the next version of the iPhone has not been officially announced, all we know about it are rumors...

Some of those rumors are...

Built in GPS
3G (instead of Edge)

One thing that HAS been officially announced is an official iPhone SDK to be released in February.  This means that the "jailbreaking" (read: hacking) of the iPhone that is currently required to install 3rd party apps will no longer be necessary as the 3rd party app developers will be able to officially create applications for the iPhone.

The current software version for iPhone is 1.1.2.  There is a rumored update (1.1.3) supposedly around the corner...

Apple will probably try and charge you for everything, fuck them for not having this shit ready in June.
I know they're not gonna support DropCopy and other file sharing via wifi.

Thanks for clearing up the partitioning thing.  I have gotten that message... "You're running out of disk space! Please delete etc.....".  But that was back when I was installing everything... now I just install the stuff I use on the daily.

With the SDK, 3rd party developers will be able to make apps just like they are doing now, but not have to jailbreak the iphone first.  There will be much more freeware / shareware / donationware out there than now... and that's a good thing.

That Lyrics app is pretty cool . . . and Tecmo Bowl IS certified classic... "hut hut hut hut hut hut hut"

I don't see how they can block DropCopy since wifi is a standard which uses your IP address to communicate over your wifi network.  I can see Apple selling games (just like they currently do for the iPod) through iTunes, but I don't know about apps.  We'll see.

All in all though... iPhone is awesome.

It's looks alright, I'll wait for 1.1.3 Jailbreak if Apple complicates things.

Told ya, they're faggots x 10.

We had some doubts, but now we can tell you we are sure: the new firmware 1.1.3 is real. Or as Nate puts it: "if it is a hoax, they did a buttload of work." The fact is that it installs normally and it works perfectly. For those not familiar, Natetrue is one of the most respected and veteran iPhone hackers and the author of the popular app iBrickr.

Nate goes on to say that "it installs on the phone no-questions-asked and for that you need to have Apple's private key, which i can confirm that the iphone hacker community does not have—as much as we would love to have it." Indeed, Apple's private encrypted key, used to authenticate all accesses to the iPhone most-private guts, hasn't been uncovered yet by anyone in the world.

In other words, no firmware upgrades can be installed without the knowledge of this key. Furthermore, the idea that someone would have access to this key and spend months to create a fully functional firmware update, with key new features and without any documentation whatsoever seems just absolutely silly.

Effects on unlocks and Third-party applications
The update breaks AnySim's unlocks. Logically, you can't unlock this update using AnySim and there's no alternative to iTunes for activation. If you want to activate, it will only work using iTunes and a standard AT&T account. Nate says, "that is the only way we have been able to activate so far." Nate tried to upgrade an AnySim 1.2u iPhone and it failed. Even while he was able to force it to boot, the phone refused to activate even with a normal AT&T SIM card. "I suspect it's due to the fact that the baseband could not be upgraded to the 1.1.3 'required' version", he says.

Other updates remain untested, like iPhone Sim Free or any of the hardware-based ones, like TurboSIM. In theory, these should work just fine, but jailbreak and activation would be absolutely impossible for the time being. We would have to wait until the update gets released in the open to try new alternative activation methods.

Your favorite third-party apps will be gone too, with no possibility of return for now. The update fixes the bugs which allowed "the jailbreak method we were using for 1.1.2, locking us out again, as expected."

Other effects
Like previous firmware upgrades, whatever is in the user partition remains unchanged. Only the Apple-owned part is affected by 1.1.3. So for those of you who claim that this is a fake because it says "Nate" in the network instead of "AT&T," that's the reason. He changed the network name in 1.1.2 using a program by Erica Sadun, of TUAW, called Make It Mine.

New features and future releases
The list of new features are confirmed too: all are correct, but he couldn't confirm if they are the only ones or not.

Many of you would be wondering how this could have happened, knowing the extremely tight security around the iPhone firmware updates. We don't know, but apparently the leak has occurred because "someone wanted to help the unlock effort." The source of the leak is completely anonymous, even to the people who have had access to the upgrade.

Why the update hasn't hit Torrent yet? The code could be watermarked to catch any leaks "so for now it's screenshots and videos." Also, distributing it won't make much sense at this point: according to Nate the iPhone 1.1.3 Firmware update could hit as soon as next week.

No doubt that any updates that Apple releases between now and when they release the SDK will break any 3rd party apps and unlocks.  But after the SDK, I don't see how 3rd party apps can be "broken" as they will be built off the SDK Apple releases.  "Unlocked" phones can be another story... but I think it will be easier for hackers to "unlock" it once the SDK is released.  There will always be some delay between a new Apple update (1.1.3, 1.1.4, etc.) and when the hackers are able to "unlock" it.

Which app do you find using all the time?

Props for the info.

Bare with me for a minute cuz I'm a dumbass.  So the latest iPhones will be open to 3rd party apps, but the current jailbreak mod won't work?

^  Before the SDK is released in February you will have to "jailbreak" the phone to install third party apps.  After the SDK is released there should be a standard way of installing applications on the phone without having to "jailbreak" it (hack it).

I suppose the iPhone software will get updated when the SDK is released.  I think that by installing that update, any current 3rd party apps you may have installed on the phone will become inoperable... however, I see the current developers of the apps simply re-building those apps using the SDK and releasing them that way.

Hopefully that made sense.

Short story:  I believe it will be a lot easier to install apps once the SDK is released.

Yes, there will be a standard way on installing applications but at what price :(

The SDK will not tell people how to hack the iPhone.  Apple will hire private software companies to do all the third party applications for them.  Apple wants total control and to charge you for every little thing like the Nintendo Wii charging you for games you already bought :grumpy: charging for a web browser, wtf makes me sick.

Applications I use all the time...

iPowerHour
Nes
Navizon
Books
Customize
