Police Dog Gets Owned

An Oceanside police officer with a dog partner tried to pull over a man driving a small GMC pickup erratically on College Boulevard. The driver refused to stop and a slow-speed chase started, said California Highway Patrol Sgt. Steven Toth.

The driver ran a red light, struck another vehicle and kept going, Toth said. Toth did not know if anyone was injured in the crash.

The driver headed south on Interstate 5 with the Oceanside officer in pursuit. CHP officers joined the chase in Carlsbad. At one point, the driver exited at Pershing Drive in San Diego and led officers around downtown streets for a few minutes before he returned to the freeway and exited at the Coronado bridge.

Near the middle of the span, its highest point, the driver slowed and got out of the truck. The Oceanside police dog was released on the driver.

The dog bit the man and took him down, Toth said. The man then stood up and jumped off the bridge with the dog, Toth said.

The man survived. The German shepherd named Stryker died, Toth said.

Toth said the officer who worked with the dog was very upset.

“It's his partner,” Toth said.

The officer's name was not released.

Harbor police used a boat to rescue the man. Information on his condition was not available.

Authorities were astonished that the man survived.
