Classic. That's from the press conference right before the Hard Knock Life tour. I've been watching "Backstage" alot too lately.
That's kinda the tour that inspired the Up In Smoke tour.

Circa 1994 on the set of "What Would You Do".

(Mia Maugé with Nate Dogg on set in LA, circa 1994)

I was a freelance music journalist at the time, and was in LA seeking an interview with Dr. Dre. Dre and I had a mutual friend who introduced me to him and before I knew it I was in the ‘Dogg Pound’ circle so to speak. Hanging at Deathrow HQ, at Das And Kurrupt’s video shoot, plaiting Snoop’s hair at the famous Bernie Grundman recording studio, playing pool with rapper Rage and actress Regina King at Dre’s houseparty, at Snoop’s home watching a boxing match with his wife, baby son Cordé and other friends and family, interviewing Dre in his car and at a studio….. I could go on. Nate Dogg was at almost all of these occasions. I remember feeling a little intimidated by him at first. From a distance he seemed so serious. I don’t think I ever saw him laugh or smile. He definitely seemed older than his years, by comparison to his friends. Unlike everyone else, he was disinterested in the English girl with the mad hair (I had a tendency to wear my hair in ‘chinie bumps’ at the time – it was the 1990s!).

Circa 1994 at Snoop's house.

(Mia Maugé with Nate Dogg at Snoop Dogg's House, LA, circa 1994)

Someone introduced me to him and he barely gave me eye contact. But the more time I spent in his company I began to realise that he simply wasn’t the ‘limelight’ type. He didn’t seem to enjoy being the centre of attention. He had a quiet presence, a calming influence in a room. When people spoke to him they went over and spoke quietly; one to one. And I suppose that’s what he offered to ‘Hip Hop’ too. His mellow, soothing baritone vocals brought a sensitive side to the reconditioned funk break-beats Dre was hooked on. When he sang on a tune it felt intimate. And although he stepped under the spotlight with solo material in the form of three albums, it’s Nate Dogg’s unique and essential contribution to the G-Funk era that we will remember him for. I think it’s where he was most comfortable.
