Back in the day everyone wrote their 'freestyles' as freestyle just meant a written verse you had memorized to kick if someone asked you to kick a rhyme or you were in a battle. Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap - all the greats wrote their freestyles, and I read Eminem saying he'd write a dope verse and memorize it to kick when people asked him to bust a verse, because no one wants to hear you kicking some 'mouse in a house with a blouse' shit when they ask you to kick some shit

I don't know when it suddenly came to mean 'off the top of the head' like it does now, but back in the day people only did that messing around, no one was busting amazing shit off the dome, it was all written
