Nobody likes to talk about how badly Mos Def fell off...
« on: April 20, 2008, 08:11:10 PM »
This dude was holdin down conscious hip-hop from 98-2001 and then he started thinking he was a rock artist or something and stopped making good music.  He seems to have lost his touch.

In the late 90's he was a part of two of the greatest conscious hip-hop albums ever.. his first solo album and the joint he did with Talib Kweli.  He was also on fire with all his guest appearances, freestyles, etc... proof of this is tracks like "Oh No" he did with Phaorah Monch and Nate Dogg.

As a person I still love and admire Mos Def.. but as a rapper, how come nobody talks about how hard this dude fell off?

I totally agree. Blackstar and Black on both sides was brilliant, but dude did fall off.

Isnt Blackstar pt2 in the works? Maybe he can redeem himself.

That 'The New Danger' album did suck. When I bought it home after buying it I was so dissapointed, so I didn't even check Tru3 Magic.

I wouldn't say no one cares that Mos Def fell off. I would love to hear another Black Star album and another solo with some hip hop beats and not rock ones.

I liked New Danger, because it was different.

Tru3 Magic I dunno.

I only bought it cuz I was at best buy and saw it, later I found out it was a discontinueds version so now its a collectible, I've really only given it 3 listens.

He barely rapped on black on both sides and so the bigger question to me is why he was so revered in the first place. Don't get me wrong I am not saying he was a bad rapper but he was nothing special he just happened to be on a label (ruckus) which stood out from the crowd at the time. Of course the fact that daddy murdoch's money helped promote the label brought him to more recognition also.

I kind of agree there..  He only has a handful of standout tracks to me, so no better than your average rapper aka not gonna give a shit when u dont hear from him again.

He is a good actor tho.

Agree with most people in here. He's a dope rapper, but like many rappers who have tried something different, he mostly failed. New Danger was 10% creativity and 90% disorientation. Mos has the talent to make great hiphop, but he doesn't have too much of a knack for rock and other genres

I don't get your post, I need further explanation to nearly everything you said.
