Nick of Time - "Working out our Differences"
« on: March 27, 2002, 11:40:24 AM »
Well... I'm new here, so I thought I'd drop something with a little meaning. I've realized recently that although my skills are getting better I tend to just spit battle/hate verses and don't do anything with depth. I wrote this piece in French class last period and I tried to focus on writing something with meaning rather then just flashing lyrical skills. I wasn't listening to a beat when I wrote it but I can kind of imagine it working with the beat from Aesop Rock's "no regrets" (from his labor days album). That beat was produced by blockhead.

The piece is all about how people can't look past differences and see the real person inside. It deals with all kinds of different forms of prejudice and with the way people deal with it. The story told in the last verse is rather violent but it describes the hate that can stem from verbal abuse. Thanks for peeping...

Hook (x2)
Why can't we all just get along? ~
What wrong? Aren't ya'll that strong? ~

Verse One: Racism
Shit! Racism's like a one-hundred sided dice ~
There's natives, orientals, indians, blacks, and whites ~
That's just to name a few, there's more of ya'll alive ~
But just for time's sake I'll deal with those five ~
Natives are often called indians, that's a mistake ~
Indians live in Asia, not the United States ~
Brown people have caught a lot of heat lately ~
Just because some idiots hit some buildings in NYC ~
That's like blaming whites for Hitler's wrong-doings ~
Or calling out all blacks because of crime* ~
Why does racism always spring from hard times? ~
It's cuz idiots need someone to blame ~
They're so stupid it's almost funny ~
But the the reality of the situation sets in ~
Two kids at my bro's school killed cuz of of their skin ~
And who catches the heat for this shit? Whites do! ~
That's racism in itself, those who talk like that are fools ~
Practice what you preach is what I always say ~
I'm too disgusted to continue, let's move on to gays ~

Hook (x2)

Verse Two: Homophobia
Alright, fine! I'm guilty of this one too! ~
I've insulted gays openly, it's a filthy thing to do ~
It's just another difference, like being black or white ~
You're not making a commitment when you talk to a gay guy ~
But ya'll talk plenty, and everything you say ~
Comes back to the fact that that man or woman's gay ~
Sexuality's a part of a person, not the whole ~
By dividing straights and gays you're keeping us all pigeonholed ~
Divided, statistics, split up into diff'rent mental spaces ~
For people who "Stand United" it's a damn disgrace, it is ~
How would it feel to be dissed for something you can't control? ~
It's just as bad as racism, just letting ya'll know ~

Hook (x2)

Verse Three: More Prejudice
Remember that fat kid you dissed in high school ~
Yeah Johnny was his name, you're right, that's the one ~
Constant verbal abuse drove Johnny to get a gun ~
He came to school the next day strapped and took out ya left lung ~
Choking, caughing, you struggled to the door ~
Johnny spotted ya and he popped ya one once more ~
Your best friend was the next one he popped ~
Then Johnny took your girlfriend and gunned down a few cops ~
He joined the mob, age of fifteen, earned his way up ~
They call him "Fat Johnny" but it's in fear, not for fun ~
Eventually he got caught, and run to jail in his own limo ~
But your girlfriend still wears his trenchcoat when she's alone ~
(((Short Instumental Break)))
This is to remind all those who diss minorities ~
Whether race, sexuality, weight, or other "note-orities" ~
Is it because you can't deal with your own oddities ~
All of ya'll who with me, just nod with me ~
Just nod with me, nod with me...

Hook (x4)

(((Spoken)))=
We talk about "hating" a lot in hip hop culture but we don't deal with bigger issues of hatred. Hate comes in many forms. Deal with your own differences yourself and loved ones so you can better deal with others' differences. We can make this world better.

---END---

*It is not my opinion that blacks should be associated with crime anymore then anyone in another racial group. But it is the opinion of some racist fucks.

What do you think?
