The Michigan Rap Community Mourns MC Breed


November 23rd, 2008 | Author: Jake PaineYesterday, HipHopDX reported that MC Breed had died after a bout with kidney failure [click to read]. Late last night, DX reached out to several Michigan Hip Hop spokesmen to understand the significance and loss of Flint's rap pioneer.
"Yo, that was my fuckin' nigga. [It's a] sad day for Hip Hop," said Obie Trice, citing Breed's track "Gotta Get Mine" with 2Pac as a favorite. "And rest in peace to one important nigga in music - and Detroit, Flint music, period."
Boss, famed for being the Detroit native who would go on to be the flagship artist of Russell Simmons' Def Jam West label, spoke about her longtime friend and peer. "Breed was not only a pioneer of Detroit Hip Hop, but of Hip Hop as a whole. Having suffered with kidney failure myself, it is important that we as entertainers, take care of our health and promote organ donation and our communities. Breed will be greatly missed."
Hex Murda, famed Detroit Hip Hop personality and manager of Elzhi, Black Milk and Guilty Simpson, consultant for Trick Trick and executive producer of Tronic [click to read], stated, "Breed may be gone, but the beauty of having a classic record is that shit lives forever. So whenever niggas hear 'Ain't No Future In Yo' Frontin'," you realize it's timeless - and so is the boy Breed. Rest well my, nigga."
"Breed was one of the only cats I knew that reached icon status, but never had a deal with a major label," pointed out Fattfather of Fat Killahz, a group that worked with and toured nationally with D12 and Slum Village. It was revealed yesterday that even at the end of his career, 36 year-old Breed was reportedly in motion to re-sign with Ichiban Records, where his career began 17 years ago.
Local hero Merciless "Mersy" Amir, added, "MC Breed will go down in history as one of Hip Hop's greatest songwriters, respected and recognized by his fans and fellow artists alike as a genius."
Describing Breed, Blackface from the group Rock Bottom accounted, "A real nigga forever. We had just sent him money for a verse he was supposed to do next week, so I say that to say, that we fucked with dude till the day he died!" Rock Bottom has worked extensively with a number of Detroit artists, including D12.
Marquise Porter, an artist once signed to Lisa "Left Eye" Lopez' Wish Records, was on the verge of doing a single deal with the late Flint, Michigan icon. He stated, "Breed was the best underrated artist, period, and we love that nigga. He was a sheer genius."
Guilty Simpson [click to read] said, "Breed was a pioneer for us. He put music from our region on the map way back. It's a sad day for not only Flint, but Detroit and Hip Hop as a whole. R.I.P. He'll be missed."
Throughout his 17 year career, Breed worked with artists from Atlanta, the Bay area, Los Angeles and elsewhere.
