Mass violence mars London derby

A man has been stabbed in the chest during "large-scale trouble" involving hundreds of fans at West Ham's Carling Cup match against Millwall.

Fights broke out at 1800 BST and were still raging five hours later. A 44-year-old man is stable after being stabbed in Priory Road at 2025 BST.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said missiles had been thrown at officers but none were injured.

Inside Upton Park stadium West Ham fans invaded the pitch three times.

By 2300 BST several hundred West Ham fans had congregated outside the stadium chanting and bombarding police with crates and bottles.

The first pitch invasion was after West Ham's equaliser, while the second more serious invasion happened after they scored a penalty.

It took officials about six minutes to clear about 50 people from the pitch and police had to redeploy within the stadium to tackle the invasion.

West Ham won the game 3-1 after extra time, upon which there was a third invasion by hundreds of fans.

About 200 riot police and at least 20 mounted officers were at the ground and a police helicopter circled the area.

The Press Association quoted an unnamed 19-year-old saying he saw a police officer being kicked on the ground.

The police spokesman said: "There is large-scale trouble involving hundreds of fans which we are dealing with at the moment.

"Officers are now containing it but there is still disorder. Hundreds of fans are estimated to be involved."

One pub reportedly had its windows broken by bricks during running battles across several streets up to half a mile from the stadium.

Eyewitnesses told of hooligans trying to rip out bollards and lighting "small fires".

Five arrests have been confirmed, including one for affray and one for breaching a banning order.

BBC radio reporter Ben Jacobs, who was at the stadium, said: "The trouble broke out outside the Tube station about 600 yards from the ground.

"There were [hundreds of] riot police and Millwall fans managed to break through the divide."

'Really intimidating'

Tony, a steward at the game, told BBC Radio 5 live they were powerless to stop the violence.

He said: "When you have 2,900 Millwall fans it is really intimidating.

"There is not a lot you can do - you have to hope the police presence can help you out."

A 29-year-old man had to close his kebab shop in nearby Green Street for two hours.

He said: "All hell broke loose - it was very frightening.

"Bottles and bricks were being thrown from the back and some were hitting West Ham fans at the front.

"There were loads of people with bloodied faces."

Aaron Smith, from Hemel Hempstead, who was at the game, said: "I saw one man cornered by at least a dozen Millwall fans before kick-off. Terrifying scenes."

And a Millwall fan told the BBC: "It was like a war zone outside the stadium. There was fighting all round.

"I brought my kids with me tonight and they've seen some violence that is indescribable."

A Football Association spokesman said: "We absolutely condemn the disorder.

"We expect all culprits to be banned from football for life - they have no place in our game."

Why this is even a shock to people and the media are making it out to be the 80's again is stupid, what did the police and the 2 clubs expect?, you have 2 clubs which have some of the worst reputations in world fotball and the fact its a local derby and the 2 clubs cant even stand the sight of each other should make the police think this is gonna be ww3, from what ive seen the police have fucked up and not done enough to stop the 2 groups from ganging up, as soon as that draw was made it was obvious both sets of so called fans were going to be hell bent on causing trouble

I just hope it doesn't harm our chances of us gettin the world cup and i just wish the news etc would stop fuckin going on about it as the more they rant on the more publicity these pricks are getting.

Steve Bacon has been West Ham's official photographer for over 35 years. Last night was the scariest he can recall at Upton Park. Here is his account from where he was working on the pitch.

"It was hostile from the start which made it very difficult to work. I was at the Trevor Brooking Stand end, in the corner where it meets the West Stand. I always take my place there as that's the way West Ham normally kick. Although they went the other way this time, I decided to stay where I was.

"At first there was just a lot of banter. The stewards were trying to calm down the Millwall fans in the lower stand but I couldn't see any trouble. Later on though, you could see things were starting to happen in the East Stand, the old Chicken Run.

"It got naughtier as people came out of their seats in the West Stand. Young kids were being lifted over people's heads by the stewards. West Ham supporters were goading the Millwall fans.

"I noticed the referee and one of the goalkeepers pick some things off the pitch that had been thrown, I think they were coins. Stewards were carrying broken seats.

"Then West Ham scored their equaliser towards the end of the 90 minutes and people started coming onto the pitch. At first, it looked to be just delight at the goal. The West Ham fans were just strutting their stuff in front of Millwall, rather than causing any aggro. Then the atmosphere darkened.

"During extra time I went to the other end and worked the Bobby Moore Stand. I hoped it would feel safer there and it did, I didn't seem to be in any great danger. As the game ended though, people were leaping over my head to get onto the pitch.

"I was at Birmingham City a few years ago in the cup when there were problems. I remember standing with Tony Cottee on the sidelines as everyone else ran for shelter. But as far as trouble goes at home, this was the most intimidating atmosphere I have witnessed. It was scary and hard to work.

They should have known this was going to happen, West Ham v Millwall always has problems, what makes me laugh though is that despite all of WHs financial problems their fans invade the pitch, destroy seating etc which will likely get the club fined or at worse kicked out, but how does any of that help the club? Its just stupid tbh

This is all being blown out of proportion. I was in in the Canning Town,Plaistow and Upton Park area's from 5pm to 7.45 pm before making my way to the stadium. In all honesty,I rarely saw any Millwall fans. There was chinese whispers going around from mobile to mobile all evening, such as 600 Millwall turned up at Barking (Nowhere near where many W Ham fans would be) and took liberties with the few fans that were there. Also, there were rumours that Millwall were at the boleyn pub. Contrary to both of those rumours, there's no way a firm of 600 blokes could travel to Barking without being caught by police cctv. All you saw before the game was numerous police vans flying up and down the Barking Road from station to station. This was obviously everytime a few hundred or so millwall turned up at station's to which they would of been escorted straight to Upton Park station and straight into the North Bank entrance of the stadium.I actually travelled via the underground from London Bridge to Plaistow and didn't see any Millwall on my travels. Also, the riot police were waiting at Plaistow for Millwall fans,in order to keep them on the train all the way to the next stop which is Upton Park.

With regards to the violence outside of the stadium, this was obviously Millwall fans without tickets who turned up after kick off. They had there full allocation in the stand when I got inside at 7.50.So any trouble that was going on outside was obviously Millwall fans that were without tickets. Inside of the stadium, there was banter from the West Stand Lower NB corner (where I was sitting) to the North Bank Lower (where Millwall fans were seated) between both sets of fans. However, early in the second half rumours spread around the North Bank corner of the West Stand Lower that a West Ham fan had been stabbed to death outside of the stadium after the game had kicked off when West Ham fans were all inside. This basically prompted about 50 fans to try and get at Millwall fans to which the majority were all being clubbed over the heads by riot police. This went on for a good 7 minutes, with the odd few West Ham fans trying to have digs at old bill or trying to get past them. The OB then had the HD Cam Recorder's out on the fan's faces. Nothing major really.

However, when Stanislas scored the first,a good few hundred rushed to the front and tried having a go at Millwall only to be held back by the riot police. By this point, the Wall fans arseholes had fell out. There was hardly any of them looking over, let alone gesturing or singing. It really looked as though a good few hundred West Ham would get at them if they kept persisting to get through the barriers. The atmosphere was unbelievable,a proper football match. After the penalty,West Ham fans from different area's of the ground got onto the pitch however, none of them were anywhere near the Millwall fans or even trying to get to them.It was basically fans from the Bobby Moore Stand or the Bobby Moore end of the West Stand that got onto the pitch, they didn't even go past the half way line to the half of the pitch where Millwall fans were. Its been overly exaggerated on tv.I've got mobile video's which show the West Ham fans who did manage to get on the pitch were actually those in other area's of the stadium including a stupid fat cunt (and mainly a lot of young boys) who didn't go anywhere near Millwall fans or try and incite them. Was more a case of our younger fans getting excited that we had equalised after playing shit and not even looking like scoring up till that point.I even saw stewards jumping up and down, celebrating arm in arm with a few fans who had jumped the barrier. Unbelievably exaggerated by the bullshit journo's who were probably nowhere near any of it.

In all,I think the police outside of the stadium did a decent job and any trouble would of been in area's that were not policed. My old man and his mates (whom are all well known WH old faces) told me there were planned meets and a few fights but not even 1% of how it was in the old days.I think the small number of arrests alone, tells that story anyway. My dad and his mates were also told by a London Met chief superintendent who know's them well, that the person stabbed was a 44 year old male who's actually a Millwall fan who didn't even have a ticket. So i'll leave other people to decide what he's reason's were for being in and around the boleyn area.

The stuff on sky is so OTT, the bit where they show people behind a fence was next to Queens Pub (smoking bit) near UP station and WH were singing let's go fucking mental, there were about 10 riot police outside getting a few plastic beers thrown at them but not exactly a riot. On the other side of that fence were 50 times the number of WH standing about waiting for Milwall to come out of UP station, if you didn't want to be there you didn't have to be. A few idiots threw bottles, most were just singing and having a look really. Those Millwall fans (who all had to produce match tickets before being let out of the train station) got escorted to the ground without any fights going on.

So in all,a few drunks were on the pitch for a couple of minutes! A few plastic bottles were thrown! Some mugs who are not west ham fans and who were not at the game got into some trouble?

Lets all hype it up,and pretend this will effect England's World Cup bid when shithole's like South Africa and Brazil can manage to host the tournament. In all honesty,West Ham shouldn't even get punished for this. Millwall were very well policed... about 20 rows seperation between them and us, the Upper Trevor Brooking stand above them was closed off! No fans allowed in there whatsoever.Hence the attendance only being 25,000.

The main trouble was in the Centenary corner where it was a full time job for stewards and police to keep control, but they managed to do so.Then after the goal's about 50/60 mainly kids went over the wall from the less carefully stewarded Bobby Moore and East Stand danced around a bit and then returned...NO violence at all from those actions.

So I doubt West Ham can even be charged for not controlling the fan's inside the stadium. Let alone those (who may of not even had tickets) outside of the stadium for throwing plastic bottles.

I can honestly say, this is the best football game i've ever been to.The atmosphere was electric all night. I honestly don't think a football match will ever top this, even though i'm already booked for South Africa next summer.

The media have loved the West Ham - Millwall rivalry since they started making shit films about it (Green Street, anyone?). They know they'll get a reaction from the mass public by hyping this shit up.

Interesting, props.

What i dont iunderstand was the point of the pitch invasions ?
