Star Wars Movie Dreams
Where might a third series of films take us?
by Scott Collura
http://movies.ign.com/articles/105/1058073p1.html

January 4, 2010 - Every once in a while new rumors emerge regarding a return to the big screen for George Lucas' once-revered Star Wars series.
Of course, this talk always goes nowhere and usually turns out to have originated out of some website's desperate need to pull in traffic… or some fanboy's desperate wish to see his ultimate Star Wars fan-fiction come true. (No Greedo/Han slashfic we say!)

And while many of us remained burned, or at least disenchanted,
after the Prequel Trilogy, there's no denying that a new series of films set in that galaxy far, far away still stands as a tantalizing prospect,
especially if it were to be done right this time (i.e. with certain Bearded Ones handing over the creative reins to young blood).
But where would such a series go?

This topic has been the basis of speculation since we all learned (or those of us old enough at the time learned,
anyway) back in the late '70s that A New Hope was not a one-shot but merely the first in a planned series of three trilogies.
Eventually those three triumvirates got cut down to two three-film sets, but let's ponder today where a new and modern Star Wars movie series might take us…

Luke, Han and Leia Continued

As Star Wars-struck kids in 1980,
fantasizing about the ramifications of Darth Vader's paternal revelation and Han Solo's dire carbonite-encased status and a million other galactic matters,
visions of a grand and epic, Excalibur-esque prequel trilogy (if not the Prequel Trilogy) featuring a young Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi danced in our heads.
But the alleged third trilogy was a much more vague thing, as foggy in our collective mind's eye as a Force vision on the frozen surface of Hoth.

There've always been conflicting reports on the matter, dating all the way back to the early days of Star Wars' success,
with even Lucas himself often contradicting previous statements he'd made about the films,
but it seems that this so-called "Sequel Trilogy" (Episodes VII, VIII, and IX)
would've taken place some two decades after Return of the Jedi and featured an aged Luke Skywalker training a new order of Jedi Knights.

So let's say that Lucas decided to finally make these three films.
How cool would it be to see Luke not only finally back in action, but also in true Jedi form, albeit as an aged, Ben Kenobi type?
Certainly Mark Hamill would be up for the role, and since Lucas controls his own destiny, so to speak, when making his films, he wouldn't be constrained by any studio to jettison Hamill for a more box-office ready star.
Of course, if Lucas could draw Harrison Ford back -- and judging by the state of Ford's career lately, he just might be able to -- that problem would be solved anyway (as long as Ford lost the grump factor for a spell).
Carrie Fisher, though… well, she just doesn't fit the Princess Leia role anymore, does she? More Penny Marshall now than Leia, she's become sort of twisted if not evil.

Or, why not go the Avatar motion-caption route and create CGI versions of Luke, Han and Leia,
giving them whatever look is required of the characters but still allowing for the original actors to play the parts?

The Thrawn Trilogy

There've been a Bantha's buttload of Expanded Universe Star Wars stories told during the long and oh-so-prosperous years since the original film debuted in 1977. That includes an untold number of books, perhaps the most popular of which are Timothy Zahn's Thrawn Trilogy, which introduced the titular villainous character as well as Luke's eventual ladylove Mara Jade and various other core elements of the post-Return of the Jedi world.

Set about five years after the destruction of the second Death Star, beginning with the 1991 novel Heir to the Empire and continuing with Dark Force Rising and The Last Command, the story is seen by many fans as the one true follow-up to the film series. The thing is, in order to get it shot, our main heroes like Luke, Han and Leia would either have to be recast in order to appear to be the right age, or Lucas or whoever was to make these films could go the mo-cap route here too. Because let's face it: Ain't nobody going to believe that Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher could have twins in this day and age.

Another option would be to go with some of the more recent books which take place later in the Expanded Universe timeline, such as the Legacy of the Force series which has explored the later years of Luke and the gang, as well as their children. This would once again allow for the casting of the original actors in their roles, while also bringing in a "next generation" of actors to star alongside Hamill and the rest as Jacen Solo, Ben Skywalker, et al.

Dark Empire

Turning to the world of comics, another possible source for the continued adventures of the original characters could be Dark Empire, the six-issue Dark Horse series from 1991/1992 by Tom Veitch and Cam Kennedy. Along with Zahn's books, which this series ties into, Dark Empire and its sequels, Dark Empire II and Empire's End, were quite instrumental in the resurgence of Star Wars' popularity in the early- and mid-'90s that eventually led to the making of the Prequel Trilogy.

As with much of the Expanded Universe, Dark Empire doesn't necessarily make all that much sense in terms of the film series' continuity (that whole Chosen One/balance of the Force thing? Fuggedaboutit). Having said that, it does expand upon and make sense out of the ending of Return of the Jedi: Of course the entire Empire wasn't wiped out at the Battle of Endor, and this series paints the bigger picture of life after the Ewoks. The Empire is still kicking, and so is Emperor Palpatine himself in fact, courtesy of cloning technology and some Force hocus pocus. Yes, Ian McDiarmid, there's still more acting work to be done by you!

As with the books, the comics offer a huge canvas from which the filmmakers could draw, though truth be told these adventures would surely wind up being scaled back to some degree in order to make them affordable. Sure, Lucas owns ILM, but he's still gotta pay the bills.

The Bounty Hunters

Ah, bounty hunters. We don't need that scum!

Or, actually, we do. For whatever reason, Boba Fett and his ne'er-do-well compadres have become almost as popular as the heroes of the Star Wars universe, so much so that Lucas never passes up to include a few in whatever SW product he's working on, be it the prequels (Boba's dad, eh?), the current Clone Wars TV series (Cad Bane, eh?), or a certain Holiday Special (animated Boba, yeah!).

The thing is, Star Wars fans eat this stuff up. And since Lucas is always out to make a billion, we certainly wouldn't put it past him to give his bounty hunters their own movie series. It sounds kind of awful, doesn't it? But again, if he were to take a back seat creatively and give an interesting young director the chance to work within his world, imagine the possibilities. Just as Peter Jackon's faith in Neill Blomkamp gave us District 9, if Lucas were to follow a similar path -- with the box-office solid bounty hunter premise -- the results could be quite dynamic.

Just no more kid Boba Fett stuff, O.K.?

Knights of the Old Republic

The concept of going back in time to the tales of Jedi from thousands of the years in the past, during the height of the Old Republic's power, isn't new, but it was perhaps best realized in the videogame Knights of the Old Republic and its sequel, Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords. This game, if adapted correctly, could turn out to be what many of had hoped and expected the Prequel Trilogy to be.

Set four millennia before Anakin Skywalker was even a glimmer in the midi-chlorians' eye, Knights presents a new villain called Dark Malak, apprentice to Darth Revan. Vader-esque in his appearance, with a chunk of cyborg-ified metal in place of his jaw, Malak is getting all up in there with the Jedi of the time period. Meanwhile, the game's player is an amnesiac whose investigation into his/her past throughout the course of the adventure reveals a, shall we say, close connection to Malak and Revan.

The game offered the player the opportunity to follow either the light or dark side of the Force, which was a nice twist and also parallels the pre-existing Star Wars films which of course depicted the rise and fall (and rise?) of Darth Vader. Knights is also chockfull of fun characters who are vastly more interesting and entertaining than just about anyone from the Prequel Trilogy, including sarcastic Twi'leks, loyal Wookiees, and homicidal droids.

An MMO sequel called simply Star Wars: The Old Republic is due this year, which will certainly offer a vast array of characters, locales and situations for Lucas to crib from if he were to go really old school with a new series of movies. Besides, the marketing tie-in here is a no-brainer!

Star Wars Tales

One of the great things about the Star Wars galaxy is the never-ending stream of personalities who populate the world. Good guys, bad guys, antiheroes, crooks, comedic relief types, hot alien chicks, and so many more, the varied and funky denizens of Lucas and Co.'s imaginations would seem to prove that someone at Skywalker Ranch did too much acid during their younger years.

And that's where this final suggestion comes from. Wouldn't you love to know more about Nien Nunb, Lando Calrissian's mumbly copilot from Return of the Jedi? Or how about giving Wedge his own adventure? The guy helped blow up two Death Stars after all and danced with Ewoks -- he deserves it! Pull from the Expanded Universe too and flesh out guys like Cade Skywalker. And why not give the mournful Rancor Keeper his own movie, detailing his sorrowful journey in life post-Rancor until he finally finds a new love… O.K., maybe not all of Lucas' characters deserve their own stories.

These would probably work best as short films, perhaps as preludes to longer Star Wars adventures in a nod to the movie serials of old that Lucas apparently loved so much as a kid. And best of all, with the shorter format and lack of name actors, they'd be relatively inexpensive to produce.

The bottom line is, people are hungry for more big-screen Star Wars and there are plenty more stories to tell. To paraphrase Han Solo himself, you're all clear, George -- now let's blow this thing and go home!

So there you have it: just a few ideas of where future Star Wars movies could go. What would you like to see next on the big screen for George Lucas' enduring galaxy? Comment below and let us know…

Another slick dark-side moment when Anakin kills in Ep' 13, the background music once again faintly shifts to the Vader theme.
