I don't know, some of these creators of the current drama series would probably not be that good in making films.  The reason their writing has been great is because they are able to take their time to tell a story.  Let's take Vince Gilligan for example, he's done X-Files in the 90s and Breaking Bad in the 00s, and the film he came out with was Hancock.  I think restrictions for TV have little do with greatness, sure you can explore a darker subject but at the end of the day it call comes down to keeping the viewer interested.  Lost is damn good and that's on regular TV.  Every decade has poor films that come out though.  The reason you notice crap movies these days more because movies just have larger budgets these days so a flop is really noticeable.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Arrested Development, 30 Rock, Curb Your Enthusiasm are pretty damn good comedies that can compete with the best sit coms of any generation.

The movies I listed aren't just original for the sake of being original and out there. They're just good quality films.  You're saying you can predict movies these days.  Why is that?  Because it had to start somewhere.  So when these films came out at that time, they were original.  Plus, most films take stories, themes, characters from literature that's been around for hundreds of years anyway.  In order for something to be cliche, it had to start somewhere.  Originality is out there, and good originality too.  Paul Thomas Anderson is making his mark, the Coen Brothers are making their mark, Pedro Aldomovar is making his mark, Wes Anderson is making his mark.  In a few decades, people will be talking about these guys.  People will say things are cliche because of them.

Maybe it's just different taste in music, but for me I'm loving a lot of things that are coming out these days.  It isn't just me either, critics that are older than me are loving these albums as well.  I'll list a few.

Kid A by Radiohead
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kid_A

Here you have an album that is praised by numerous publications as the 00s best album, and also seen as a one of the all time greatest albums.  Each Radiohead album that comes out is very well received by music critics, who are again...much older than me.

Any album by Joanna Newsom gets overwhelming praise by music critics

Arcade Fire is another band that gets a lot of praise.  Funeral is another album like Kid A that receives universal praise from music critics.

Again, it just might be musical taste.  But don't count my age against me.
