I've noticed listening to some of this newer music like Drake, Kid Cudi, and Lil Wayne; that it's clear the new trend has become one of rappers talking about how happy they are.

Like, it went from 2pac saying "Is life worth living or should I blast myself?" or Wu-Tang rapping about "Life as a Shorty shouldn't be so rough...As I turned I learned life was hell/livin in a world no different from a cell", and Eminem with "If I could swallow a bottle of tylenol I would/ to say goodbye to Hollywood".

Now you have Drake rappin about "I want this Shit forever Man" or Kid Cudi on that new Dre track like "I'm happy and so ya'll are Madd".. something like that.

Anyone else noticed this trend, and what do ya'll think about it?

I haven't noticed it, but I guess you have a point.. I think it's more that kind of music is getting more popular.  There were always artists who rapped about positive and uplifting shit.  It's just getting more popular now.  And I like it, I believe in that kind of thinking to the fullest.

i listen to a lot of Joe Budden; i don't know what you're talking about lol.

honestly though, if i had a billion dollars, i'd be happy too.

if Jay-Z started rapping about suicidal thoughts, everybody would be like "nigga please".

You have to ask yourself a questin though, does Joe Budden represent the overall trend in hip-hop or is he a excetion to the rule?

And Jay-Z for example, I have always felt that rappers like him and Puffy are trying to sell a glamorous lifestyle to people; and to me, that is a change from the hip-hop of the 70's to 90's.  Artists like Jay-Z and Puff lead the way for a trend that has finally come full circle, where rapper aren't selling their skills and art, as much as they are actually selling a lifestyle.  Look at the Rockefella ads from the Source and XXL, they would have the artists chilling in upscale clubs afterhours with blonde women and bottles of champaigne.  Contrast that with the early 90's and YoMTV rap host Fab 5 Freddy going to the hoods where rappers came up and doin interviews and selling the real lifestyle that artists came up in; they tried to show something real the fans could relate to, and sell that back then.

Here is Puffy's former sidekick Loon talking about how their goal as artist was to sell a lifestyle to kids that wasn't totally representative of what was really going on.  They only wanted to show one side of fame to the kids, who were easily taken in by it all...

I don't think a few random lines from a handful of artists constitute a trend for the entire genre of hip hop, no.

"I Need A Girl" was a monster hit and that was his song he did with Usher and Puffy, he was on a few huge hits that year.

Well obviously I don't have the time to write out every line from every song, but anybody who's kept an eye on things should be able to observe a trend has shifted from rappers who used to rap to reflect the realities of the hoods they came up in; to rappers wanted to sell and exploit a lavish lifestyle that's attractive to young kids.
