Top Dog Ent discussion
« on: December 06, 2010, 09:07:19 PM »
So Im curious, we all know that Top Dog Ent has two stand out artists. Jay Rock & Kendrick Lamar (K. Dot). What Im wondering is, how does Jay Rock feel about Kendricks recent hype. I mean Jay Rock went from having a major label sign him and even attempted to launch two singles ("Lift Me Up" & "All My Life") which ultimately didnt do anything, I dont think they charted either. Which is a shame because both tracks were very good and should have been enough to launch the album. But here you have Kendrick Lamar who has plenty of mixtape material but no mainstream notice and he manages to catch the ear of the good doctor. How do you think Jay Rock feels about this? I mean hes put hard work in on his career since 2006 and his lil homie is gearing up to shoot right past him. Do you think hes going to keep it 100 and ride with his homie or do you think this will cause friction between the too?

I thought this was gonna be a thread for the Top Dawg artists who don't stand out :P.

I don't think Jay Rock's the kind of person who'd get pissed at someone else in the same boat as him getting more success (if he was I think he would've dissed Nipsey by now). Sides K. Dot's been in the game as long as Jay Rock has, don't think that because his work is getting noticed now means that he's the newest kid on the block.

I was kinda thinking about that too but Jay Rock is hella cool peoples, not any jealous type of dude

I'm sure he wishes Kendrick all success because if he wins then so does Jay Rock and the whole team

They have both been in the game at the same time but if K. Dot was the new kid on the block and he is getting more recognition, it's for a reason.  He raps circles around Jay Rock.  Actually, his lyrical ability is far more superior than alot of the guys that are coming out right now.  Plus, he has shown that he can pen a song as well as give you a song with punchlines in it.

As much as I like Jay Rock, he came at a time when Game was pretty big and it was "cool" to be a blood so he rode that wave.  I'm not trying to discredit his ability as an artist but he's not that great.  The majority of his songs carry the same content.  Meanwhile, K. Dot has shown different sides of his craft.

I always thought the artist order was:

K. Dot
Ab-Soul
Punch
Jay Rock/Schooloy Q

Well I agree with you guys about K dot being in the game as long as Jay Rock. There reason Ive been curious about this is because Jay kinda introduced Kendrick as his lil hommie, ya know? The more I think about it, I dont see Jay Rock getting bent out of shape either. The reason his content doesnt change is cause Jay Rock is still in the hood. He still bangin, so naturally thats what he raps about constantly cause thats his world at the moment. Kendrick may have come from the projects but he doesnt bang like Jay does. I agree about his flow being better than Jays. I just think its sad that Jay Rock failed when everyone had high hopes for him. I guess Kendrick is next up.

TBH I don't think there ever was much hope for him. It's not like his videos were constantly being played on MTV or his songs were constantly being played on the radio or like he appeared on a lot of mainstream singles. Dude got his name out there a little by having his single with Lil Wayne and will.I.am as a Freebie on iTunes and sooner or later Nipsey came on the scene and since they both appeared in magazines and songs together for a brief moment it looked like something was going to happen. At least that's the way I saw his situation.
The only hope for him now is if K. Dot blows up with support from Dr. Dre and brings him up with him.
