Smitty’s fourth solo endeavor, Its True Because It Rhymes, introduces his listeners to producer Murdock, and a new style and sound. Its True Because It Rhymes takes a step towards the mainstream, without compromising the truthful, emotional content that has won fans of Smith over worldwide. Murdock’s lush instrumentation and smooth, groove oriented beats invite listeners into John’s realm, and provide a rich backdrop for Smith to wax poetic over.
John Smith continues to gain momentum with a banging new album, a high energy live show, and pounds of respect from peers across Canada and worldwide.
When asked who he represents as an artist, Smith says, "the poor folk who still dream. I try to document my individual experiences first, with an affinity for sharing the stories of my community." On his latest album It’s True Because it Rhymes — available for free download at marathonofdope.com — he does just that.
The record could be described as a step away from the traditionally underground sound of Smitty and a step towards the mainstream — but it doesn’t compromise the lyrical truth and emotion that has become a staple of John Smith’s music. It’s True Because It Rhymes also introduces the world to producer Murdock, whose "lush instrumentation and smooth, groove-oriented beats invite listeners into John’s realm, and provide a rich backdrop for Smith to wax poetic over," according to marathonofdope.com.
Smith remembers what it was like before there were any resources or opportunities for MCs to grow their talent. Clubs weren’t playing rap music or booking live acts, so the hip hop jams were socials that happened at the West End Cultural Centre, Le Rendez-Vous or the Crowne Plaza. There was no advertising, no Internet and no sponsorship, so flyers were passed out at high schools or at the mall. It was in this small community that John Smith practised his craft.
Now, the increased accessibility of hip hop culture has John Smith occasionally longing for the good ol’ days.
"My biggest beef is the expectation of instant gratification from many of this current crop," Smith says. "Making a handi-cam video over the beat for Wiz’s Black N Yellow is cool for your Facebook page, but a relevant local artist it don’t make you. (It’s like) I said in a song a few years back, ‘Tees and tats — that’s the MC starter package.’ It was about the new generation I was watching come up, they really like telling people they rap, they form a group — half the members ain’t even making music — and they design the logo for the merch before they put together an album."
When asked about his current album, Smith says, "Its True Because It Rhymes is about my life a few years ago, that’s when most of it was written. The title gave me the leeway I wanted to take some liberties with the actual goings-on in my life. A few years back I decided to let messages appear in my music naturally, as opposed to going into a song with an agenda."
To fans and critics alike, the result is clear. Smitty says it best himself: "The result is better representation of what I want people to see: A young, single man from a working-class family and town who has dedicated his life to music."
