any1 else hate the term "WWE Universe"?
« on: December 02, 2011, 05:51:58 PM »
Iv been watching this more now that my oldest son enjoys it but they now label the fans as the WWE universe. It sounds corny as hell and makes the fans sound like geeks. It has changed since the late 90s for those who havent seen it recently

I hate all of their stupid, corporate mandated crap like not being able to use the term "wrestling" or having to refer to every wrestler as a "WWE Superstar."  I prefer the old WWE/WWF that wasn't ashamed to admit to being a show about wrestling.

^ Was it ever about wrestling though? I always looked at it as nothing more than entertainment.

There's very little actual wrestling in it.

Good points about it not being much about wrestling.  I guess what I'm trying to say is that while I don't mind some of the non-wrestling aspects of Raw and Smackdown, I don't like that they've erased all mention of it being a wrestling show.  To me, it goes right along with their decision to go "PG" a while back.  It's like they're pretending that they've made the show more sophisticated, but they've just watered it down and made it sissy-fied.  The Attitude Era may have not focused on wrestling much either, but at least they weren't ashamed of being "low rent" back then.

They've been PG, if that term was around back then, in the late 80s too. Maybe not by definition but it was at least comparable to today. But the wrestlers were already "Superstars" and you had the same non-wrestling parts of the show too. Brother Love Show, Piper's Pit, Barber Shop etc.. Some not so PG things might have happened like Earthquake making Quakeburgers or Jake's Snake biting Macho's arm along with the slap to Elizabeth but overall it was very much "PG".

I dreaded those segments back then because I didn't understand a word but they were not much different then the in ring promos of today. Only difference (and that's biased) is that back the characters were more interesting.

And PG isn't the problem at all. Blood won't save a storyline, or an attempted act of necrophilia won't make an angle hot either. Look what happened to Punk/Cena. It started hot and then just slowed down (by branching in different directions). I'm still waiting for an explanation for the title change at MITB2011 although Cena had visibly his foot on the rope. Maybe they use it some day to give an angered Cena, in his slow burn heel turn, reason to complain.

Anyways, I remember that I somewhere read that back in the Attitude era (which everyone seems to love so much), one of the writers (not sure if it was Russo himself) kept a flipchart where had some sort of storyboard for every wrestler. So they could see which past wrestler A had with wrestler B and could always insert someone in a feud and mention it. They provided continuity to some extent and played off of that for some time.

Either way: WWE Universe sounds corny.

I agree with you that they were pretty much PG in the
80s.  Don't know about the 90s though. Not sure Mae
Young could give birth to a rubber hand on a PG show.
Either way, I don't disagree that story lines like that or
The Katie Vick storyline are stupid and pointless.  But
There were times when I thought their low-brow humor
Was entertaining, and I find it annoying that they have
publicly tried to "clean up their image" because
It strikes me as insincere. Plus, I'm not sure there's
Anything wrong with a wrestling show being crude once
In a while.
I don't know. Ultimately, the wrestling is the most
Important aspect of the show to me. But it just
seems like they've tried to sanitize the show for no good reason.

That's the last time I can remember was the attitude era. It was less embarrassing to admit to others that you watched "wrestling" lol.

It was less cheesy, and cringing.

Now that I watch it again with my son, I see the same BS script....

Wrestler comes out to speak for 10 minutes, either John Cena, or Punk
Commercial
Some Italian clown comes out and does some corny act, or weak match
Commercial
Attendance figures & BS promotional Plug
Pointless Diva match that no one gives a fk about
Crowd wake up after Diva match
Same high flying mid-carder wrestlers either in singles or tag team match
tour date commercial
commercial
backstage locker room confrontation
Superstar promotional plug video
same main event consisting of same wrestlers

That is the script every damn week. predictable and weak by comparison

The 80's were PG too, but they had more interesting, and of course a trait rare as fk these days - Consistency, meaning that characters didn't change their personalitys every 5 minutes, which made story lines more solid

If/When you have kids, you'll be watching again  8)

Only this time, you're jaw will drop, wondering where the hell it all went wrong. Like you, I never really watched it for a good number of years until recently, so this is all new to me

it's ridiculous, just like replacing wrestling with sports entertainment! Fortunately Triple H & The Undertaker will be the REAL headliner in this year'sWrestle Mania! I like The Rock too, but putting him in his "big" return match against that Cena boy? He's so corny, but he's the posterboy of the company unfortunately!

Maybe you'd rather watch TNA's "Wrestling Impact"? They got many of the disgruntled former WWE guys like Kurt Angle, RVD, Mr Anderson (Kennedy) & Jeff Hardy!

Umm sorry I think you meant Chris Jericho vs CM Punk.
