Flooding swamps Duluth, drowns zoo animals
« Reply #15 on: June 20, 2012, 11:51:51 AM »

Several animals at the Lake Superior Zoo in Duluth, Minn., drowned overnight when torrential rain caused flooding across the city, swamping roads and sending sewage spilling outside overflow tanks.

"We have 11 confirmed dead animals, most of them barnyard animals," zoo marketing director Holly Henry told msnbc.com. "Two thirds of the zoo is under water."

All but one of the zoo's barnyard animals died, zoo spokeswoman Keely Johnson said in a statement. That included the zoo's donkey, goats and sheep.

"Our entire staff is devastated," added Peter Pruett, the zoo's director of animal management.

More animals might have drowned but the flooding has prevented a count, Johnson told the Duluth News Tribune. The raven and vulture cages are among the areas still under water.

The zoo's seal was able to swim out of its exhibit and was found on nearby Grand Avenue, the newspaper reported.

The polar bear also got out but was quickly darted and is safe in quarantine, Johnson said. None of the zoo's dangerous animals got outside the zoo's perimeter fence, she added.

Police helped locate Berlin, the female polar bear, the Associated Press reported. "Even though it's a large white object, it's pretty nerve racking," police spokesman Jim Hansen said.

Dozens of people commented on the zoo's Facebook page, most expressing sadness but some anger over what they felt was inadequate precautions by the zoo, which is next to a creek that has flooded before.

A 2010 flood was the worst in memory, the zoo said at the time. But in that event no animals died or were hurt and only one had to be moved.

Candidate links Holocaust with gun control
« Reply #16 on: June 20, 2012, 11:53:52 AM »
The comments quickly drew strong rebukes from Democrats and Jewish organizations.

In the video, Samuel Wurzelbacher loads a shotgun and fires at pieces of fruit placed on wooden posts. "In 1939, Germany established gun control," he says. "From 1939 to 1945, six million Jews and seven million others, unable to defend themselves, were exterminated." He ends the video by saying, "I love America."

Gun control opponents have long held that Adolf Hitler was able to seize power in Germany in part because of controls on firearms.

"Using the memories of the six million Jews killed in the Holocaust to make a political point is never appropriate, under any circumstances," said David A. Harris, president of the National Jewish Democratic Council.

Ohio Democratic Party Chairman Chris Redfern called the video "incredibly offensive." Wurzelbacher is running as a Republican in Ohio's 9th U.S. House district.

Wurzelbacher defended his statements on Twitter, posting Tuesday that he did not say that gun control caused genocide.

A message was left Wednesday for Wurzelbacher, who became known as "Joe the Plumber" during the 2008 presidential campaign after questioning Barack Obama at an event.

Northeast begins to bake on 1st day of summer
« Reply #17 on: June 20, 2012, 11:55:53 AM »
NEW YORK—Temperatures climbed toward the high 90s along the Eastern Seaboard on Wednesday as an unusually early hot spell heralded the official start of summer, with people wilting at graduation ceremonies, students trying to learn in suffocating classrooms and authorities warning folks to check on elderly neighbors.

The National Weather Service has forecast heat in the mid- to high 90s in cities including Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington. Health officials warned residents to drink water, stay out of the sun and in air conditioning, and to check on elderly neighbors and pets. Public cooling centers have been set up in dozens of cities for those without air conditioning.

Several relatives of high school graduates were treated for heat exhaustion at an outdoor ceremony in North Bergen, N.J., and taken to a hospital, police told The Record of Bergen County. Ambulances were on standby at the event, which was held outside to accommodate about 5,000 people, said Capt. Gerald Sanzari of the North Bergen Police Department.

In Howell, N.J., school officials made Wednesday the last day of the school year instead of Thursday, citing the heat. And at nearby Wall High School, people attending the graduation ceremony will be able to watch a remote broadcast inside the air-conditioned building.

Connie Vincent, a mail carrier, was already sweating as she began her rounds in a residential neighborhood in Manchester, Conn., Wednesday morning.

"There's nothing you can do," she said as she dabbed her face with wet washcloths. "Tomorrow's my day off, thank God. I've just got to make it through today."

In a rare bending of the rules, the Metro in Washington, D.C., said passengers on Wednesday and Thursday would be allowed to drink water, an exception to their no-drinks policy. The National Weather Service said the temperature at Washington National Airport was 95 degrees just before 2 p.m., though it felt like 99.

Deborah Otchere, 59, mapped out a tree-lined route to work and brought a change of clothes to her job as a secretary in a Washington law firm. Among her traveling supplies was a partially frozen bottle of water.

"You live here long enough, you know how to prepare," she said.

Forecasts for upstate New York on Wednesday and Thursday called for temperatures to hit the 90s from Niagara Falls to the Vermont border, with highs topping out in the mid-90s in some places.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures at Logan International Airport in Boston soared to 93 degrees around 1 p.m., but high levels of humidity made the heat feel like it was 97 degrees.

More than 450 cooling centers were being opened around New York City, which is under a hot weather advisory with an expected high of 94 degrees. Mayor Michael Bloomberg encouraged people without air conditioning to seek out the cooler spaces or visit the city's beaches.

The city's 1.1 million public school students are still in session for another week, and just 64 percent of classrooms are air-conditioned. The city is leaving it up to teachers and administrators to monitor the situation in each school, Bloomberg said.

"There's nothing unsafe about it. It may be a tiny bit uncomfortable, but these are young, strong people, and we're not going to ask anybody to stay in a building where we think it becomes dangerous," he said.

In downtown Providence, R.I., at the central bus terminal, a worker for the Salvation Army -- red-faced and hot herself -- was handing out free bottles of water, reminding people to stay hydrated. Users of public transit were enjoying free service on buses and trolleys, offered on days when health officials declare air quality to be unhealthy and driving is discouraged.

In Philadelphia, the city's highs in the next couple of days could break decades-old records of 98 degrees, set in 1931, and 99, set in 1923. Normally, the high for Philadelphia is about 84 degrees.

"You're talking about almost 15 degrees above normal," said Kristin Kline, a weather service meteorologist in Mount Holly, N.J.

The wilting heat is also expected to hit Boston-area residents hard. Temperatures up to 97 degrees were forecast for Wednesday, followed by 99 on Thursday.

On New York's Long Island, Roy Gross, chief of the Suffolk County SPCA, cautioned against keeping pets in vehicles, noting temperatures can reach 120 degrees within minutes.

"Your pet can quickly suffer brain damage or die from heatstroke when trapped in these high temperatures," Gross said.

Saddest story ever.  Never think about animals stuck at the zoo and can't get free from storms and such.

Santa Monica Judge Reported Missing Found in Carson

Linda Lefkowitz got lost on her way to work from her Pacific Palisades home Monday morning.

A 71-year-old Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge who had been reported missing was reunited with her family late Monday night after she got lost on her way to work at the Santa Monica Courthouse and ended up at a McDonalds in Carson.

Linda Kay Lefkowitz was in good condition after good Samaritans at the restaurant called authorities and her family came to pick her up,  Lt. Chris Bergner of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Carson Station told City News Service.

Lefkowitz left her Palisades home about 8:20 a.m. Monday and had not been seen or heard from until she was found about 11:35 pm.

Her husband, Frank Lefkowitz, had suspected she might have gotten lost because she has breast cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy treatments, which may have caused memory loss, he said.

"I think she may have lost perspective of where she was," he said
