When John Jackson from Brooklyn a.k.a. Fabolous came on the scene in late early 98 many considered him a newer version of Puffy’s protégé, Mase. Fab quickly dispelled all the rumors that a similar sounding voice can bring when he spit live on DJ Clue’s New York Hot 97 Mix show. The fuse was lit for a new pretty boy thug from the streets to ride the wave of success until the wheels fall off. Fabolous is doing just that. He has been in Teen People magazine as one of the “Hottest Stars Under 25”, Rolling Stones “Hot” issue and Paper magazines “Beautiful People” issue. He has been on the road as the opening act for the Nellyville tour and has appeared in a Reebok commercial and has been made into a character in EA Sports’ NBA Live 2003 video game. At the ripe old age of 23 the F.A.B.O.L.O.U.S is living out his dream.

As you are reading this, Fabolous’ newest album Street Dreams is just hitting stores and Fab is ready to continue his good fortune. About the title of his latest release Fab says, “What I’m doin’ is for the youth in the ghetto so these kids see someone doin’ what they would love to do. The game has changed over time. In the 70’s it was cool to be a pimp or a mack. In the 80’s it was cool to sell drugs. In the 90’s it was hoops and sports and now it’s Hip Hop.” For a lot of inner-city youth it has always been about Hop Hop, and just as there are many kids still waiting for the opportunity to live out their dreams on the stage, Fab used to be one of those kids. About his good fortune he states, “I never thought I was gonna be rappin’. I was always big on the music, I always loved it but I just got the opportunity. It was right in front of me so I took it.”

Now many haters or wanna be’s or future hot stars may say that in today’s Hip Hop there are too many collaborations in the music with the same artists. Well, in reality, if the music is being represented right and it is preserving the art form of Hip Hop, I say collaborate on. When the question was put to Fab about his recent and present work with other artists it is clearly visible that he is a fan of the music as well as an artist.

“It pushes my drive to work with other artists. I just try to make good music. If I listen to something or try to get an artist on it I can see that artist being on the track. I learned a lot from Clue. He has been very instrumental to me. I learned good studio habits along with punctuality. Good work ethics as well as vibin’ off the music. It’s a transition from mixtapes to albums. Artist wise, I learn from any one who’s in the game.
As Fab continues to learn he is also nurturing new artists himself as well as going through the thought process of embarking on an added career in fashion. “Right now I’m working with two dope artists. Mike Shorey and Farrah Franklin formerly of Destiny’s Child, and Hip Hop has it’s own style of fashion so I eventually wanna embark on that.”

John Jackson has come along way from the planet of Brooklyn. He was once a little kid from the hood dreaming of making it big in some way. As a youth Fab went through his own little depressing stages of life. He chipped his front tooth while trying to balance himself on a basketball. “ I was real upset when it happened but then it grew into me. People would say that’s John or Fab with the chipped tooth. So it became kind of symbolic”

Now as you listen to a Fabolous record one will hear references to things such as females swallowing kids and packages of raw street pharmaceuticals being distributed in the hood or the concealment of weaponry for protective purposes. So how does a man in his 20’s with no kids feel about that message going out to the kids that he’s trying to inspire? “I feel that a lot of kids are not as big on the words as adults are. I would let my kids listen to it but it would probably be a clean version. They see a young guy performing it so that’s what they’re focused on. I make clean songs for the kids but I don’t wanna compromise either. My spirit is good. I’m comfortable with my decisions. In the present you’re supposed to make better decisions for your future and I feel I’m doing that. I just wanna be remembered as someone who wrote good songs. I want the respect. I wanna be known as someone who didn’t slouch up. As time goes on I just wanna be at my same level if not greater.

there is hope
