The two women mistaken for fugitive ex-cop Christopher Dorner and fired upon by Los Angeles police officers have reached a settlement with the city to the tune of $4.2 million.
Details of the settlement will be announced during a 2 p.m. news conference today, conducted by City Attorney Carmen Trutanich and attorney Glen Jonas, who represents the victims, according to City News Service. Trutanich told NBC LA the women can divide the money "any way they want," calling the deal "very simple, very clean" and "a win-win for both parties."
Margie Carranza, 47, and her 71-year-old mother, Emma Hernandez, were delivering newspapers in their Toyota Tacoma pickup truck in Torrance on the morning of February 7 when police, on high alert protective detail at the start of the dramatic Dorner manhunt, mistook the women for the suspect and opened fire on them. Hernandez was shot twice in the back, and Carranza was injured by broken glass. The truck was riddled with over 100 bullets.
Los Angeles Police Department Chief Charlie Beck called the incident "tragic" and promised the women a replacement truck. However, the deal was met with complications when the LAPD decided to gift the women the vehicle as a "prize," meaning they would be responsible for about $10,000 in taxes. Finally, over two months later, a $40,000 settlement was reached March 14. The sum covered the cost of a new truck and other property.

Taxpayers got screwed by the cops, not those ladies. By God if some piece of shit shot me like that, I would sue until the city went bankrupt and damn well deserve every penny.

It doesn't matter. The only ones responsible are the cops. They should pay monetarily at least, if not face criminal charges.

Cops messed up. People were getting abused to catch Dorner. Showing the a gun in the hands of certain people is a very scary thing to the establishment. There were people that wanted that man dead.

My thoughts exactly as well. Police should not be militarized.
