All Time Spurs vs. All Time Heat
« on: June 04, 2013, 10:32:28 AM »
Last time I did this was Celtics/Lakers, which was a good way to end a two year run. But I wanted to bring it back for this one. You have two franchises who are very consistent with being among the best teams in the NBA year in and year out. Since the ABA days, the Spurs have always competed and from 1999-2007 won 4 championships. Since being founded in the late 80's, the Heat have always competed and look to be on the verge of a dynasty in the 2010's. This will be a tough hard fought finals and that will play itself out. What I want to know is, who has have the best players in franchise history. If the all time greatest Spurs played the all time greatest Heat, who would win?

All Time Spurs:
PG: Tony Parker
SG: George Gervin
SF: Sean Elliott
PF: Tim Duncan
C:  David Robinson

Bench:
PG James Silas
PG Avrey Johnson
SG Alvin Robertson
SG Manu Ginóbili
SF Mike Mitchell
PF Larry Kenon
C  Artis Gilmore

All Time Heat: (not too many players have over even 6 years in Miami, weird actually)
PG: Tim Hardaway
SG: Dwayne Wade
SF: LeBron James
PF: Chris Bosh
C:  Alonzo Mourning

Bench:
PG Sherman Douglas
PG Jason Williams
SG Steve Smith
G/F Eddie Jones (no joke, he played his best offense in Miami)
SF Glen Rice
PF Udonis Haslem
C Shaquille O'Neal

I know that some will argue some players over others. But I am going with their time in their teams. Douglas in his two years with Miami was amazing, afterwards... well it was all down hill. Mourning was a Heat for longer than Shaq, and when Shaq came he was already declining well Mourning played his best years in Miami. The Heat was a harder team to do since they had so many rental players, like Shaq, like Steve Smith and Mashburn, so it's very hard to separate Mashburn as a player to Mashburn as just a Heat. Some players had their best years in a Heat uniform, even though they may not be better overall than others left off. I wouldn't say Haslem is better than Brian Grant, but Grant only had one good year in Miami and then was just an over paid player, while Haslem has had many good years with Miami. The Spurs have had better stability with their roster and it was easy picking players based off of their time in San Antonio.

Let me know which team has the better roster, and hopefully the finals will be good.

No love for Rodman?  He has to be on the All-Time Spurs team.   He lead them to the best record in the Western Confrence two years in a row, and averaged 18 rebounds a game!

I was debating that, but Seikaly was a center and I was debating having 3 centers. As I said, the Heat were so hard because they had so many retail players. Trust me, the Heat roster can be debated a lot, NIK put Mashburn, but just judging as a Heat Mashburn wasn't his best. Overall Mashburn would have been over Bosh as a starter, but as just a Heat player.. not as strong of an argument.

And Rodman, I was going to put Rodman on there, but he only had 2 years in the Spurs, Larry Kenon was a Spurs legend who averaged over 18ppg, 9rpg each year, including after the merger of the ABA and NBA, as while as 3 all star games as a Spurs, 2 in the NBA, 1 in the ABA, and the Spurs themselves ranked him as one of the best players in their history.

Also, Sherman Douglas was AMAZING as a Heat. Granted, that was only 2 years, but the Heat don't really have players that play more than 6 years for them. When trying to piece their roster together, I was like WTF? But Douglas really stood out as a Heat, even though his numbers were inflated because it was an expansion franchise. Still, you can't deny that as a Heat, he was doing things that make other PGs superstars.

didn't all of his Spurs team mates hate him?  he was bad for chemistry

anyways Glenn Rice should be a starter and go with Lebron at the 4 spot so you can have the most potent scoring attack possible.  Nobody will miss Rupaul Bosh.  8)

I had no idea before doing this how many rent-a-players Miami has had. It's crazy. It's like everyone has to take a vacation on South Beach for a year or two if you are somebody. It's what made choosing their roster very difficult.

Spurs have been a stable franchise for as long as they exist. You can argue between Sean Elliot or Manu Ginobli as a starter, but it was easy to pick their roster. Placement is hard, but the Spurs have had enough stability that there is very little grey area. Miami though seems to always be a team that's pieced together to surround their existing talent.

In the 90's, it was get players to surround Hardaway and Mourning, the 2000's it was get players to surround D-Wade, and the 2010's seem to be the decade to build around LeBron. The cord always to seem the same, but the pieces always change around the stars. That's just how Miami operates.
