That is a window of 8 to 10 years. 10 years ago, 03-04 Kobe was playing with Shaq, Malone & Payton and heading into the Finals that year. LeBron was on a bottom feeder team in Cleveland. 8 years ago, the Lakers were not as good and the Cavs were a much better team than in 03-04, but Kobe averaged 35 points a game and had his 81 point game.

Point is, that why LeBron had a TON of hype around him, the average 10 year old boy is more concerned with who is the best or most known. They know what's on TV. Tell me at that time Kobe wasn't plastered all over the TV? The Lakers had to have triple or the National TV games than the Cavs during those times.

Kobe's window of unmatched popularity ran from 03-04 until about 06-07 or 07-08. All the Rookies who will be entering the league who were kids around those times will say Kobe.

My favorite player when I was 10? Hakeem Olajuwon. Why? Because by the time I was 10, Jordan was on the White Sox. Magic had already retired. Same with Bird. Hakeem was the best player out there. I was born when Olajuwon came in the league. But, as a young impressionable fan, Hakeem was the one I saw on Sports Center. He was the one I saw on TV playing.

To this day, Hakeem is still my favorite player. You gain a connection with that first player you follow.

I skipped over any post of yours. Though, you may have missed my point: You gain a connection with that first player you follow. You follow the first player you really find out about. You find out about the Best player (LeBron was NOT the best player 10 years ago) or the player you see the most (Kobe, again, was on a team that made the Finals, had 3 other hall of famers and were a top 5 in the NBA 10 years ago, who do you think was on National TV and Sports Center more?).

Remember, in 03-04 you just couldn't go to a website and watch all Regional Games. You were at the mercy of what was on TNT/ESPN that night. Kids who were born 2 years before and 2 years after me all say Jordan was their favorite. Why? Because when they were getting into watching Basketball, he was the best. By your theory, my favorite player should be C.Webb. He was the Rookie of the Year when I REALLY got into Basketball. He was hyped in College. But, he's not. My favorite players in Baseball were virtually any mix of Mark McGwire, Kirk Gibson, Jose Canseco, Ricky Henderson or Orel Hershiser. Why? Being from California was a major factor and because in and around 88 was when I started playing Tee-Ball and going to Dodger games with my team and my dad (or A's games with family in the Bay). The A's and Dodgers played in the Series that year. Why wasn't I into guys like Dave Justice, Sandy Alomar or Jeff Bagwell  (all amazing players, but not guys that I could say are my favorite)? Because they just weren't the best or playing for the best when they came into the league.


In Football, obviously being in California I had a lot of choices. Being from L.A., the obvious choices were the Rams who were terrible and the Raiders who my dad taught me to hate. Branching out, closest to me was the Chargers. I remember my dad listening to Mighty 690 (which was the a sports Radio station in San Diego that we would get up here in L.A.). But, i couldn't get into them. That left the Niners. I had obviously heard about and saw Montana, but it wasn't until I really was able to follow the game that I got into the Niners. Watching Young and Rice with Ricky Watters on Offense and Hanks and Norton on Defense left an impression on me. Those were my favorite players. Not guys like Marshall Faulk or Jerome Bettis.

I say all that to say this: Everyone is different and will find one thing or another to relate to a person, place or thing. Typically, when it comes to being a fan of something, the person will relate to what is popular, because it's easier to understand.

It depends on when they're born my friend. Like I said earlier, anywhere from 9 to 11 is where most kids I knew really started following a sport religiously. Do the math, most of my friends and family are all into Players who were popular around that time frame in their lives. You're the exception and not the rule, as I stated before. As for C-Webb. I'm merely going by your way of thinking. Popular player before the pros. High draft pick. Lots of hype. Just like LeBron. And while C-Webb will never be considered one of the best ever, at that moment when he came into league, how would I have known that? Why didn't I relate to him? I know everyone is different... money. I said that. I also said you were the exception, not the rule. Talking about myself is more of a way to show that it's not just 1 Sport, it's multiple. Talking about my sibling, my friends etc. is again, a way to show that there's a reason for my way of thinking. Bottom line, players born in 94-95 more than likely started watching Basketball religiously just like any other kid. Somewhere between the ages of 9 and 11. That puts them right in line with Kobe being at the height of popularity. It's not about relating. It's about who they see first. If you can dismiss me not being to a star like C-Webb when he was a rookie, what makes these kids different with LeBron? Outside of being able to prove your point... nothing.
