I'd give it to the Yankees.

Why, because they try to buy championships and still can't win?  They had 3 times the payroll of the Kansas City Royals and finished with a worse record than the Royals.

I would agree with you in the era of Mantle and Ruth, but today baseball is so screwed up.

Off the top of my head I would have to say the Lakers are the best franchise in the history of sports.

It's hard to pick "THE BEST" one, but Lakers are def "ONE OF THE BEST" ever - no question about it.

You're just jealous that your team is too poor to actually spend money and compete.

You're thinking way too much in recent years. I just mean looking at the entire picture, outside some brief bad times, they've been a big-time team forever. Virtually every year they're expected to compete, and it's been like that since the 20's. I don't like how baseball is run either, but any team could be spending as much as they do, but that's just not how it's been. I love years like this where they fail to make the playoffs despite their massive payroll, but looking at it objectively it's hard to put anyone above them. As far as the Lakers go I'd give to to them in terms of the NBA, but in all of sports I still have to say the Yankees.

History of Sports? Na. From Ruth, Mantle, DiMaggio, Gehrig & Berra to Jeter & Rivera. It's the Yankees.

It's honestly not even debatable; Yankees.

LOL...YANKEES HAD A HEAD START. IN 65 YEARS, LAKERS ONLY MISSED THE PLAYOFFS 5 TIMES.

SINCE 1947, WHEN THE NBA BEGAN, THE LAKER FRANCHISE HAS WON 17 TITLES ... YANKEES 16

I've already spoken countlessly on this forum about the integrity of the NBA. It's embarrassing that two teams (Celtics and Lakers) have combined more titles than the rest of the league in history.

Even more that in theory, the Bulls could of won eight titles in one decade.

This NBA season has the most balance in a long while.

Winning the World Series is a crap shoot regardless of the favorite. 50-1 long shots can win if everything is clicking. Not to mention, you can't discredit the 50 years before the Lakers existed. That's longevity.

So what you're saying is that the only case the Lakers (or any franchise for that matter) can make for "The Greatest Sports Franchise In History" is if you put "Since ____" afterwards. Fair enough.
Although when you discuss one of the greatest sports franchises of all time it'll be the team that's been the very top more times than anyone else, which is the Yankees. I think they also have the most WS appearences and most WS losses too.

And that "the Yankees have been around longer" excuse is total bullshit. There are a lot of franchises that have been around just as long, if not longer, than the Yankees and none of them have even come close to the amount of succcess the Yankees have achieved.

well, since the mlb has been around for much longer than the nba, then of course yankees will have more titles under their belt...but in terms of average, lakers have a higher rate of quality seasons in a 65 year span than the yankees have had in 111 year span. in essence 17/65 > 27/111 = lakers > yankees

The Yanks are 27-13 in the World Series.

They have 2 times the World Series appearances than the number 2 team.

Only 1 other team in MLB history has at least 11 (no other team has more than 9 after that) Championships.

Of all teams that have at least 3 appearances in the WS, they have the 2nd highest win percentage.

____

The Lakers are 16-15 in the Finals.

They have 10 more appearances than the number 2 team.

They have the 2nd most Championships behind that number 2 team that has 10 less appearances.

Of all teams that have at least 5 appearances in the Finals, they have the 5th highest win percentage.

___

Since 47, the Yankees had a stretch where they won appeared in 6 of the 7 WS and won all 6. Their next stretch was 4 straight WS appearances and went 2-2. Their next stretch was 5 straight WS appearances and went 2-3. They went a while without an appearance, then hit 3 straight and went 2-1. They had another cold streak and went 0-1. Their next stretch was 4 out of 5 WS appearances and winning all 4.  Then, most recently, winning in 09.

Since 47: 17-7 - Yankees
Since 47: 16-15 - Lakers

NIK gets owned right here.

the Yankees are easily the best sports team ever.  not even close.  it makes it even more hilarious because of the fact that you can't argue the Lakers as the best NBA team ever considering another team has more championships than them.
