I'd give it to the Yankees.

They had 3 times the payroll of the Kansas City Royals and finished with a worse record than the Royals.I would agree with you in the era of Mantle and Ruth, but today baseball is so screwed up. Off the top of my head I would have to say the Lakers are the best franchise in the history of sports.
It's honestly not even debatable; Yankees.
LOL...YANKEES HAD A HEAD START. IN 65 YEARS, LAKERS ONLY MISSED THE PLAYOFFS 5 TIMES.SINCE 1947, WHEN THE NBA BEGAN, THE LAKER FRANCHISE HAS WON 17 TITLES ... YANKEES 16

YANKEES 16So what you're saying is that the only case the Lakers (or any franchise for that matter) can make for "The Greatest Sports Franchise In History" is if you put "Since ____" afterwards. Fair enough.Although when you discuss one of the greatest sports franchises of all time it'll be the team that's been the very top more times than anyone else, which is the Yankees. I think they also have the most WS appearences and most WS losses too.And that "the Yankees have been around longer" excuse is total bullshit. There are a lot of franchises that have been around just as long, if not longer, than the Yankees and none of them have even come close to the amount of succcess the Yankees have achieved.
