Yankees decline A-Rod's meeting invitation

Lolz

This will be an interesting year in the Bronx. Via Bill Madden, Teri Thompson, and Michael O’Keefe of the New York Daily News:

The Yankees have answered Alex Rodriguez’s attempts to apologize for his season-long steroid suspension and the scorched-earth tactics he used to fight the ban with a Bronx cheer.

The disgraced superstar offered to meet face-to-face with team executives to apologize for his role in the Biogenesis scandal and clear the air before players report to Tampa next month, the Daily News has learned, but the Yankee brass declined the invitation, telling Rodriguez, “We’ll see you in spring training.”

Another New York Daily News source added that Rodriguez is looking “noticeably thinner and massless,” so you get the sense these bits of information — however truthful — definitely aren’t coming from his camp.

A-Rod has shared at least two meetings with new Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred and he’s abandoned all lawsuits against the league and the MLB Players Association. The 39-year-old has designs on winning back the Yankees’ starting third base job, though he’s much more likely to serve as the club’s DH in 2015 given that Chase Headley was retained this winter on a four-year, $52 million free agent contract.

Rodriguez is owed $64 million in guaranteed salaries over the next three seasons and he also carries marketing bonuses for certain career home run benchmarks — $6 million if he ties Willie Mays (660), $6 million for tying Babe Ruth (714), $6 million for tying Hank Aaron (755), and another $6 million if he surpasses record-holder Barry Bonds (762). A-Rod is sitting on 654 career home runs. The Yankees are trying to have these performance clauses thrown out with the argument that they no longer hold marketing value.
