Straight Outta Compton Directors Cut Discussion
« on: January 08, 2016, 02:07:07 PM »
So I've seen the Directors cut, it doesn't fix the film in fact it pretty much hammers in the Vanity aspects (Seriously there's dialog in this version that literally praises Cube and Dre) and all the issues everyone had with the theatrical cut. Key/controversial moments/people are still skipped over, it does all a little more "origin" to some things, but a lot of it was exposition. It also starts and stops more were as the in the theater flowed and transition more easily, this version is slightly more gritty, and also explores the political side of N.W.A and censorship a bit more. Eazy E's characterization gets a small slight upgrade. Ending does a slightly better tribute to Eazy E. Yella and MC Ren still remain background characters at most.

Still enjoyable, but I was expecting a lot more, still ok. The Romance between Tomica and Dr. Dre's wife is explored more, and LMAO @ That bullshit on Eazy E's death bed about Tomica not wanting to merry his ass. The film again slights the fuck outta Eazy E.

Still Liked it, but as for it being superior to the other version, I believe it's more or less the same quality.

I could already see when the movie came out that people were really building their hopes for a version of the film that wasn't ever going to exist. Filmmaking is narrative-driven storytelling.  If the film's focus in its theatrical version was in making certain figures look heroic, why would you think the director's cut would alter that narrative at all?  It's not like they were out filming 30 extra minutes of shit that was going to tell another side of the story.

I was expecting the bulk of the scenes to be more of the 90s era, I was right, but it was really just hype for Dr. Dre and The Chronic. Even though I knew they'd most likely avoid the beef, I was expecting them to at the very least portray The Chronic more, and Ice Cube's Death Certificate/Predator album considering they had the Riots, and Cubes Death Certificate album was widely considered a warning on Wax to the racial tension going in L.A. at the time.

And some cable providers like Verizon.

I was hoping for more content in the last 1/3 of the movie. Those post Eazy death years were mad rushed

I pre-ordered the Blu ray, which includes deleted scenes. I'm hoping the deleted scenes are not just the ones included in the directors cut. But the Blu ray includes the directors cut, which gives me some hope they will have different scenes. Also some other extras on it as well, I got it for $22 on amazon

This forum always has unreal expectations. Peiole were expecting the directors cut to be a different version of the movie lol. Muhfuckas thought Bone Thugs and Real MF G'z was going to suddenly be included. It's just like any other directors cut: scenes that were cut from the theatrical release.

I wasn't expecting the Beef to be in it, because it's never mentioned at all in the original release, and they'd get hella shit if they just showed Dre Day without the response, and Muthaphukin Gz Chin checks dre with reality and would void out his entire persona in the film/air out his dirty laundry,  and would reveal the real Eazy E, which is something we never saw in the film.

But I was hoping Let Me Ride would be on there, maybe him making Gin and Juice, since it fast forwards (incorrectly) to him showing tupac California Love. Possibly showing the makings of well any of there videos, I found it strange they recreated the original Album cover with the actors, and had Prince on the cover but he gets left out essentially,  and then LATER they just show the real N.W.A in the video instead of recreating it with them in it lol.

I never expected the directors cut to actually air out the raw real N.W.A or Eazy, but I was honestly hoping they'd at the very least just show more music type stuff. Once Dr. Dre Starts death row, leaving eazy I was thinking they were going to more or less leave Eazy in the cold, and show Ice Cube making The Predator ( or even before with parts of Death Certificate since the cut in the theater just mentions NOI, and show the political side of Ice Cube during this period, as he did do multiple speeches on gang violence and racism in the states).

Or maybe something involving Cube on the Boyz n the hood set (Seriously, him in that 63, in the hood, rocking a curl, that's just begging to be inserted into the movie considering it's style and would fit in with the whole Vanity aspect).

and you can't really blame people for expecting the possibility of the beef being added in to the directors cut, they might of not shown the actual Songs (Again for reasons above) but in the film there is no real indication that they were trading disses, just that they weren't talking with each other.

One of the things I am honestly truly surprised that they left out in either version was them firing guns on stage. Seriously, There is footage on youtube of them doing it, I know the films sanitized and washed but I figured that would of made it in, because as I know no other rap group has really done that.

I guess Gangster-Lite strikes again....

Edit: One last thing when they showed Yella just watching porn like a motherfucker I honestly thought they were going to have a short small ass scene showing him going into that industry LOL

the fact they even showed a plaque of "Dre Day" and otherwise never mentioned it shows they needed to at least briefly include that beef in the director's cut, but I still haven't seen it I'm just gonna wait until it drops in stores

Exactly. In most cases, they figure out what they are going to include before they start rolling.  It costs a lot of time and money to film scenes so the question of including Dre Day and Real Muthaphuckin G'z probably gets addressed before filming starts.  They figure out the narrative (the focus of the story) in script mode so they're not spending a fortune to film things that aren't needed.  With post, they are tightening stuff up so the theatrical version doesn't run too long.

But I don't think the film's purpose is to go in-depth on the creation of specific songs.  Most biopics avoid details that are not specific to moving the story along.  For the purposes of cinema, facts get left out and real people who were there get left out because it takes too much time to introduce them.  The Pac scene was kind of pointless (especially since he was still in prison when Eazy died) but I think they wanted it because he was a big enough star to justify it.

The stuff I'm mentioning though wouldn't of taken up much time especially if it was the same exact treatment that all the other songs received. The Pac scene they just threw in there to again big up Dr. Dre's connection to the biggest stars in rap, and the film tries to portray him as pushing 2pac into making music "I GOT PAC IN THE NEXT ROOM WORKING GRINDING"  and shows Dre giving 2pacs biggest hit.

Even with all that though if I had to rate it, It's pretty much more or less equal to the original cut we saw, This is probably the first time were I feel that both cuts work on the same level. Either way I'm gonna get it on blu ray for all the other features on it lol.

If I ain't wrong they added the 2Pac scene because after the test screenings the public kept on saying "where is 2Pac?"... according to Cube that scene was shot on June 16th 2015, so months after production was already over.

I agree on the fact that "Director's Cut" doesn't add much.. I liked the scene where Eazy-E tried to bring guns on the tour bus (the one from the trailer), but 80% of the deleted scenes are from post-NWA era.
