How come nobody ever samples country
« on: May 11, 2003, 02:54:44 PM »
I'm serious... I've said this like 1000 times, but if someone came along, and was creative enough to sample all the great country songs (not the stupid ones), they'd make a fortune.  I was just listening to this song "Angels among us" by Alabama, and it's country as hell, but man if you lifted that chorus for a rap track, it'd sell platinum.  It'd cross over a million different ways, I just don't understand why people ignore country music when they go sampling... the only thing I can think of off the top of my head that's ever been sampled is Refugee camp sampled or interpolated 'islands in the stream' by kenny rogers, and then wyclef put kenny rogers on his last cd.

I'm listening to this other perfect sample now, this dude's singing about how this woman and him got in a big fight, and then the key changes, and he goes

"If I know me..... I'll turn this car around....
I won't get halfway through town, and I'll be sorry...
I'll stop and call, and you'll say you're sorry too...
and Ill come running back to you, if I know me"

That'd be a PERFECT sample.  Cut, Paste, Hit.

Here's another one, same guy...

"All night, we love all night
Practice makes perfect, gonna get it right
Gonna get it right, one night at a time"

or there's another part of the song that goes

"I'm not yours, and baby you're not mine
but We've got something and it sure is fine,
lets take our love, one night at a time"

Either of those would be perfect for like a r&b flavored track, I just dont' get why people don't lift all this stuff.

Another one, but it'd have to be redone to sound less twangy

"Oh baby... Oh, what a crying shame,
To let it all slip away, and call it yesterday...
Oh baby, my life would be so blue,
my heart would break in two, oh what a crying shame....."

This stuff is PERFECT and nobody outside of country has ever even heard it.  where's puffy, I've got a proposition...

If U want country-samples in hiphop, take a listen to Bubba Sparxxx's new shit..
Not that Bubba is anything special, but he's far from wack..
And Timbaland is a fucking genius..

I don't feel bubba too much, and I'm not talking about just sampling stuff here and there, I'm talking about like a major track with a major artist, sampling a major country song.  I think that would be mega.  I'm really surprised nobody's done it yet, it's good to see timbaland will experiment around with stuff.

thats a good point. reason probably is that most hip hop producers dont know shit about country music and completely dismiss it. Myself included. So much easier or logical to use a familiar funk bassline or a soul hook ya know.

Bubba's new shit was a bit too much country for me. But the way Timbaland was able to combine rap & country was very impressive. Hats off

yeah, you'd have to decountryfy it if you were gonna make any money off of it... take the twang out of it, and get rid of all the fiddles and stuff (in my opinion).  The slow country songs would work good, because they've all got really beautiful melodies, or you could just remake the hooks of them in stuff.  It'd be better with the original artists though, like get willie nelson to sing something on your hook, LOL man that crap would SELL, i'm telling you...

Trauma, if you want to see it done, and nobody's doing it, and you think it would make millions of dollars, what's stopping you from doing it?  Get off ya ass boy!

I'm not that talented, and I don't have the resources to do it.  I also wouldn't get any kind of support from anyone doing it.  If dre did it, he'd make millions, if I did it, I'd never even get anybody to hear a demo tape, and then they'd sue me for trying to make money and not being able to afford the samples.
