The Documentary: The Story Behind A Classic -
The Game has stirred up a bit of controversy in the media whether it’s him talking about Eminem, Dr. Dre, or other things. Now I don’t agree with some of the stuff he’s said especially what he said about Dr. Dre but seeing how people were talking about him made me want to rewind the clock back to 2005 when The Game released an absolute classic.

I’m okay with calling it a near-classic it was a part of the G-Unit era which was the last great era in hiphop (even Nas said that) and then Lil Wayne grabbed the crown and it’s been skinny jeans ever since, but I digress

In my opinion its a shade below a classic, to me a classic album has somewhat of a crossover appeal to other genres. Like a casual hip hop listener knows what illmatic and chronic etc is, i guarantee most music listeners have never heard of the documentary. Granted i wouldn't be mad if someone said its a hip hop classic, but straight up classic in the same vain as pink flyod dark side of the moon, marvin gaye whats going on, no it definitely isn't

I somewhat agree with this. I don't think the casual listener would know what Illmatic is but that doesn't mean it's not a classic.

The Documentary is definitely a hip hop classic from the perspective that it brought the spotlight back on the west coast and helped usher in a new wave of west coast artists. I view 50's debut in a similar manner.

It really just depends on what the "rules" are for being a classic. Its' impact commercially? Impact to hip hop? Test of time?

Its not classic just for the spotlight. Dont want sound harsh, but album is boring flow vise. Lyrics name drops, gang bang, with no subject, and some beats are super trash ( all just blaze beats, higher, start from sratch, runing, eminem track). Couple bangrs, but overall very boring album.

Best g unit album after grodt is young bucks straight outta cashwille. Apsolute classic.
