Just got Suge Sept 96’ Source issue in the mail !!
« on: July 25, 2024, 12:30:55 PM »
(Of course I had this the day it hit shelves in 96’ but through out all my magazines in 2002 when I came back from Hajj at the height of my Muslim phase)

This is the 2nd greatest piece of hiphop memoribilia—the first being the Dre cover when Dre left Death Row and then in this issue the Source sort of gives Suge his chance to respond to Dre.

Part of what makes these two mags so historic is what transpired before, during, and after.  As I mentioned above—before this mag was released Dre left Death Row and the June 96’ issue had Dre on the cover telling his story.  As this magazine was going to press Suge was on top of the world.  Considered a genius, the most feared, respected, and powerful executive the industry had ever seen.  I remember reading it in 96’ and admiring Suge and soaking up all his wisdom in the interview and trying to pattern myself off of Suge’s success story.

After—the issue went to press, Pac was murdered, Suge was incarcerated, Snoop’s sophmore album flopped—and the rest is history.

Nothing new that version of the story has always been there—and I pretty much follow the Greg Kading research.  So Suge and Puffy had their beef.  Puffy had a bounty with Keefe D and the Southside Crips were like a rival to Suge’s Mob Piru bloods so Puffy was involved.

Then I also thing Suge was involved in the Revenge, Retaliation, and Get-Back that hit Biggie although obviously on the low but there is research into the relationship between and Amir Muhammad or whoever exactly the Black Muslim cat is they say did the hit on Biggie

unfortunately I too got rid of them somehow although I dont remember how

this Snoop issue is one I've always wanted, it came out before I started collecting

I don't think Doggfather was a flop, it did go double platinum. I guess if compared to Doggystyle, but he's never seen those numbers again.

I wasn’t allowed by my parents to have a subscription to the Source when I was a kid (because back then the media used to target hiphop and now they are busy targeting white republicans) I didn’t get subscribed until I was 18—anytime any Death Row related artist had the cover I bought it.  I worked at Walmart and used to check regularly like everyday to see which magazines came and read through every one of them right there in the isle at the store.  The Source was always a great magazine, the hiphop Bible for sure—at least up until the Eminem beef.  And by the year 2000 it had a lot of competition with XXL, Murder Dog, Rap Pages, Scratch—man those were the days.

I never got a good look at the Snoop issue you posted (because it was a bit before I started buying mags) but maybe that’s Doggystyle feature?  I had the Snoop cover for the Top Dogg feature which also had an Em feature that was one of the top 5 issues ever.  I got the Dogg Pound issue with the Dogg Food feature.  I had the Snoop cover from the “Caught Up” era before he signed with P—that one is also classic

Here we go again with the Doggfather debate.  If you were old enough for the Doggystyle era like me and higheyecue then you know that Doggfather was a flop when it dropped—because our expectations were so high.  But for fans that were a bit young in the Doggystyle era, or not yet born—then yeah—Doggfather is a high quality album that sold pretty well

Yeah, IDK if flop is the right word, but i was disappointed.  It has aged well and a lot of the unknown rappers on it at the time became Westcoast names.  People were expecting another Doggystyle and it wasn't that.  Now that we know no album Snoop has ever released has been another Doggystyle, we can look at Tha Doggfather out of context and appreciate it as a decent album.

yeah you understand because you old enough in the Doggystyle era.  It's exactly as you said.  Though, I would argue that Topp Dogg and Last Meal (aside from the No Limit influence) is more along the lines of what fans were expecting so those two albums were worthy followups and better than Doggfather in my opinion as an older head

...and Sccit, I think it was just misunderstanding, because I'm not flexing it's just a discussion, everything was cool.  Maybe I shouldn't have said "here we go again" because it made it sound like I was complaining
