Most hyped up west coast albums
« on: May 23, 2003, 03:23:27 AM »
In your opinion, what west coast albums received the most hype? To u, how did they live up to the hype?
I jus started listenin to rap in 93 so there many before my time that i wouldn't kno how much hype they got.

1. Dre 2001 - I didn't realize how much hype this album had til it was almost out...I donno y but I wasn't knowin anything about it, or exactly lookin foward to it, mainly cause i was young and the west was dead at the time. When I first listened to it i thought it was just a coo album, somethin i would play a lot...but after a few listens, shit.....this is the best album i had heard since all eyez on me.

2. Doggystyle - After Snoop becomin world known on the chronic, the world was waitin for this album so bad, that reports say Dre had 2 rush it to get it out while Snoop still had hype....whats scary to me is that if Dre hadn't rushed it, it could have been EVEEN better, which i personally don't even think is posible....this is my favorite rap album ever.

3. All eyez on me - Everybody was awaitin 2 see what pac would come up with after signin what was the biggest rap label at the time...pac wasn't quite the super super super star yet, but after bein in juice and havin pretty good albums, people wanted 2 see what he would come up with on a gangsta tip.....plan worked perfect. Even tho I didn't exactly like every song, every song had somethin good about it as far as Pac was concerned. This album was a classic, which suprised most people.

4. The chronic - Some of yall may think i am crazy for puttin this at 4th, but this is only because i wasn't old enough to see the hype around it...but from what i hear, people were callin dre the biggest producer in rap before this album, and after breakin with nwa, everybody was excited to see what the result would be, which far surpassed everyone's greatest imagination.

5. Dogg Food - Tha pound upped their game for every song they did on their fellow rapper's albums and soundtracks, and everyone into gangsta rap was even more excited. What made this album even bigger, was for one, Delores tucker called them somethin like the wildest worst and most dangerous gangsta rap group she'd ever heard, and then the beef with NY made it even more special. U KNOW u got a hit when people in NY are bumpin a song that is dissin them.

6. Westside Connection - Bow Down - Cube was still big from The Predator and Lethal Injection...Mack 10 just came out and had ING on lock...and underrated WC was out to prove himself to the world...the result was one of the dopest albums the west ever made, especially in the height of the west's domination. After hearin "West up" everybody was ready 2 hear what the three would cook up for the world, and they did a helluva good job.

I kno most of these were death row era related....but those are jus the albums that i saw get the most hype from the west, so y'all put yours up.

I've never been as hyped for an album as I was for All Eyez On Me.

I was about 16-17 at the time, and full of that mid-teen impatience that had me calling Our Price (remember them, UK peeps?  ;D) every day to see if they had my ordered copy in. I was even more hyped for that than I had been for Doggystyle.

Since then the most hyped I've got was for James Taylor's last album, October Road - laugh if you like, but I'm serious...

No offense bro...but october road stank....

...well it wasnt that good, got it on import for my mum cos she loves his stuff...

...there was me thinking they love it n play it all the time...

...they didnt really rate it at all...were quite disappointed, and they dont tend to get hyped too much anymore about waiting for albums. Grateful but James let them down.

Only 1 maybe 2 good traqcks on there...rest was run of the mill...average   :(

No offence taken matey  ;) You're right actually - as hyped as I got for it it let me down, but the guy's getting on a bit; he has to fit recording classic easy-listening folk songs in between getting a colostomy bag fitted and hip replacement operations now. Can't take away from the opening September Grass though - classic all the way.

Hope your folks have got Hourglass from '97. Comes in second place behind Quik's Rhythmalism in my list of favourite albums.

...yep they got that album...probalby why they were awaiting this album, as i said they dont usually get excited / think much about an album until its out...

September Grass is an excellent tune...never thoguth id be speaking about this on a hiphop forum ;)

lol...I know what you mean, but there's no fun in being close-minded about music. As much as I love hip-hop it would be a painful world if I could never listen to anything else too...
