There are some really missinformed people in here. Picnic derived from a French word that was used back in the day to refer to a social event in which everyone brought food to share people who spread false knowledge like this are no better than the people they hate cause their both spreading hate. I went and checked, and The origin of the Word Picnic has NOTHING to do with lynching, like you mentioned, it was a word long before then, it can be traced back to france, and germany.  

The french version was "piquenique", which was in existence in the late 1600's, and is derived from the words pique, which means 'pick', and 'nique' means 'trifle', the two together (they rhymed) were meant to denote a fun event where people could each bring 'pick' their own food and bring it to the 'piquenique'.

Whoever started this "Pick a Nigger" thing was obviously trying to make a REALLY, REALLY bad joke, and then the black community caught on to it not realizing they were making fun of themselves.

O.K., I just found out that the origin of the word "cracker" is complete bullshit too.

"Cracker" wasn't a term used to describe the guy who 'cracked the whip', it was ONLY used to describe poor white people.  The people who owned slaves were aristocrats.  

The term was ACTUALLY used, BY whites! White slave owners used the term to differentiate (in a condescending tone) themselves from whites who were TOO POOR to own slaves.

So when a black guy calls someone a cracker, he's actually mimicking a slave owner.  Way to go.
