THE ANTI-MOBO DEBATE RAGES ONWith only one day until the Black music social event of the year is due to take place, negative feeling continues to build towards the 'urban' awards event the MOBO's. The spotlight is firmly fixed on the controversial music event, sighting numerous inconsistencies between what the events organisers claim the event stands for, and that of its detractors. Protests have been planned for this year’s event by two of its most outspoken critics. Gay human rights group Outrage! and Black civil and equal rights campaigners Ligali. On September 15 The State received an email from Outrage centred around the Reggae nominations for this years MOBO Awards. In the email it asked that the Metropolitan Police bring hate crime charges against Elephant Man, Bounty Killer and Beenie Man. "The MOBO organisers would never nominate a racist singer who advocated the killing of black or Jewish people", Outrage spokesperson Mr Tatchell said in a press statement. "Why are they validating homophobes like Elephant Man, Beenie Man and Bounty Killer?" The gay rights group want the artists prosecuted under the Public Order Act, the common law offence of inciting violence and murder, or the solicitation to murder clause of the Offences Against the Person Act. There are also calls from the group for prosecutions to be bought against record labels, distributors and retailers such as Amazon, HMV and Virgin, who sell their music. "Their nomination signals that the MOBO organisers believe anti-gay performers are acceptable in black music", said Tatchell. "It is the moral equivalent of the Brit Awards nominating a racist entertainer who incites the killing of black people".Ligali have voiced objections to the MOBO's awarding of artists who promote violent, misogynistic and offensive content. One of the recommendations listed on Ligali.org says, "The media must stop passing the buck to others in the music industry. They have a huge amount of influence on what the general public buy and as such, must devote a substantial amount of editorial coverage to UK artists". The organisation then go on to spoof and rename the MOBO’s as the Music of Bloodied Origin and nominate Choice FM and the BBC’s 1xtra for awards, sighting promises both companies have made and in Ligali eyes, broken in their programming remits. Then finally giving the award to MTV Base for the companies, "…dedication to exploitation and denigration".
