9th Wonder's Remix of the Black Album

The album has been completed, but the seems to be distributing it in a rather strange way. Peep this from the Little Brother board:

okay.. first things first.. WE ALL WANT THIS ALBUM!!

over on sohh.com.. there was a post where, ''supposedly'' 9th had given his black album remix project to "Danye Berry" (sp.?)
anyways, this individual was instructed to post about having access to this project, and he did so.. and was given instructions to NOT leak it on the internet.. but to leak it thru the mail.. and to see how far this would actually spread.. people who recieve the cd in mail, ARE encouraged to copy and pass this cd along to others who want it... so my question to 9th... or whoever else may have the DL on this story, to (let the people know) is there any truth to this story.. or am i out by my mailbox waiting in the 8 degree weather for no reason ??

This was confirmed by the webmaster of the site, and one person who got a copy of the cd in the mail made a review of the cd on sohh

Warning: details of the songs are going to be given of course. If you’d rather hear the album first, then stop here. Don’t expect some magazine review either. I’m just writing details and giving my opinion on the song so that may bore you or you may just be interested in how I feel after hearing it. Make your own mind up.

Intro - Starts off with Jigga on Rap City discussing the album with Tigga (hey, that rhymes )...and Tigga's of course laughing at sh!t that's not even funny. You know how he is. Jigga mentions the producers on the album and mentions 9th Wonder last saying he's gonna be real serious. Intro does what it’s supposed to do: make me yearn to hear the rest of the album and sets me up for that listening experience.

December 4th - Gloria Carter sounded real corny on the original. I mean it was nice for the first listen of the song but after that, I hated her parts of the song and how the beat changed when she came on. 9th samples the intro to ATLiens which has that introspective and just a peaceful feeling and it works real well. Original > remix except when the Gloria Carter comes on…just cause of that I gotta give it to the remix cause it didn‘t make me wanna strangle her when she talked…so that‘s good, right?. They're really just on different vibes but I like the vibe more on the remix.

What More Can I Say - 9th has a vocal sample repeating “Say It Again”…real smooth 9th. I didn’t catch that the first time, but it just fits so right. Real nice usage of it too…on the level of Ayatollah with the vocal sample here. Remix > original.

Encore - 9th’s got handclaps in the song much like the original which is good because I’m not sure if anybody can top the feeling of Kanye’s beat on this one. 9th definitely is able to compete with it though because he kept that vibe of the track riding non stop with this one. He just puts his own spin on it so instead of it being a remix where the whole vibe changes, it’s just on a different tangent. Original > remix, but that really may change. It’s close on this one.

Dirt Off Your Shoulder - This song begins with an answering machine message from J. Rawls to 9th congratulating him on making the Black Album. This cat is sounding geeked cause 9th is between Timbo and Em on one of the biggest albums of the year. Sounds very proud of him. As far as the song, I’m used to the little “tss tss” on the chorus. You know what I’m talking about. I’m real used to the original and while some people didn’t like it, I did. This remix is good though. It’s the opposite of Encore where this time he really remixed it by changing the vibe of the song, and he does a good job of it. Original > remix.

Threat - Starts off with 9th talking to Marley Marl on Future Flavas where Marley asks him who he wants to work with. 9th mentions Jigga and Marley says he’s working on The Black Album and anything’s possible. Little does 9th know huh? Threat sounded real good on the original but now we find 9th competing against himself. I honestly can’t even call it cause the original sounded real smooth but very hard hitting at the same time and it was a nice change of pace in the original sequence, but now the remix is fitting in with a bunch of other 9th tracks. Remix > original but then I hear the original and change my mind. I‘ll just say that the remix = original.

At this point I’m thinking this album is crazy. This is the third time I’m hearing it in full but I’m telling you the first time I was listening to it, I was standing up at each song and geeking the **** out cause I was like “this **** is so nice!” I don’t feel like that with many albums but that feeling is uncontrollable sometimes. I was just so surprised how consistent this remix album was. All the vocals fit with the beat unlike some of the remixes on 9th Invented the Remix where I found myself cringing at some of them cause I’d just rather hear the original and the whole mood didn’t fit, but this album has 9th knocking out remixes like they’re a piece of cake.

Moment of Clarity - Okay, let’s be honest here. If 9th just farted on the track and put a boom bap on the song, it’d still be better than Em’s beat. I give Em his due when I feel the production (Lose Yourself), but the original was just horrible to me. It ruined the mood of the original album. So let’s just say that topping the beat was easy for 9th. Remix >>>>>>>>>>>>>> and one more > original.

99 Problems - Now this is one of the three songs where I was really anticipating whether 9th could even compete with it. Rick Rubin laced Jay-Z with a GRITTY vibe for the original album, and it just worked so well. The original is too sick. I still prefer the original but this one works very well too. It has a choppy feeling to it which helps create a nice feeling that 99 Problems deserves. Original > remix but this may change too.

Justify My Thug - Quik, Quik, Quik…what happened man? You’re one of the most underrated producers in the game and your production is so musically nice and layered and you’re more than what you showed on the Black Album. The original was still nice and the way that background noise knocked in the ride where you hear it at different places in the air was cool (anybody know what I’m referring to?…hard to explain…it‘s like surround sound for the ears). Anyways, I still couldn’t get with the original too much just cause I knew Quik could do better. 9th freaks Little Child Running Wild and does a nice job with the remix. Remix > original.

Public Service Announcement - Uh oh, I don’t know if 9th could compete with Just’s crazy beat on this one. If you shared that same thought, think again. I can’t say 9th topped it, but just like with Encore and 99 Problems, he’s giving the original a nice title fight and staying in the game with this album. Original > remix but that may change.

Lucifer - Ah, this was the first leaked track and I heard it before listening to the entire album. At that time, my thoughts were: why? Why does it have the same groove as the well known Devil’s Pie? It sounded more like a blend than a remix. I wanted to hear some original production from one of my current favs and I left feeling disappointed. I understood the correlation with Devil’s Pie and Lucifer so I thought that was cool. But now my feelings have changed. After hearing tons of remixes before Lucifer, I’m able to appreciate it some more. I’m not so disappointed and even when I was, I liked it more than the original. That vocal sample in the original irked the hell out of me. Remix > original.

Allure - Okay, 9th couldn’t compete here. This is the only one where I feel like there was no point in even trying. The Neptunes gave Jay one of the smoothest beats for the original and it fit so well. Not to say that 9th’s is even bad. I just can’t call it close like I did with some of the others. A remix has to make me forget about the original, not make me want to hear it. But I still gotta give it to 9th: it’s solid. Original >> remix.

9th’s Black Album > The Black Album. Why? I didn’t even tally up how many times I thought the remix was better than the original or vice versa. That doesn’t matter even if I had more votes for the original, because this album is so consistent and it had a real nice vibe to it unlike the original cause I had to skip around with the original album. I’m a Jay fan and The Blueprint was so cohesive but The Black Album left me a little disappointed. If it’s really supposed to be Jay’s last album, I didn’t think that was the way to go out. After hearing this remix album for the first time, I kept thinking that if this was how the original sounded after I ripped off the packaging, I woulda been happy as ****. This remix album is not only nice, but it’s cohesive without sounding the same. It has a nice variety with the beats. This is MUCH better than God’s Stepson. 9th really stepped up his remix game as well as his production game overall.

Big ups to Danya Perry for the hookup. Big ups to 9th, one of my fav producers for hooking up a remix album that makes me love music again (I always love music, but ya'll know the feeling). Big ups to Jay for releasing the acapellas (a shout out list on a review  ...go figure).

The whole album sounds real dope. We'll just have to hope that one of the people who gets sent the album gets it onto the net so we can download it cause otherwise it is unlikely we will ever be able to get hold of it.
