Alkmaar  Rangers
  1 - 0

8' Landzaat

Group stage - 02 December 2004 20:45 (local time)
Alkmaarderhout - Alkmaar

Good evening and a very warm welcome to the Alkmaarderhout for this UEFA Cup Group F Matchday 4 tie between Dutch side AZ Alkmaar and Rangers FC of Scotland.
The fixture sees two of the most in-form sides in Europe locking horns, with the pair sharing 17 successive wins in all competitions between them. AZ won 2-1 at FC Groningen at the weekend to remain second in the Dutch Eredivisie - their seventh league win in a row and ninth in all. Meanwhile, Rangers moved top of the Scottish Premier League with their eighth consecutive win, 3-2 over fellow-UEFA Cup contenders Heart of Midlothian FC.
Both teams have maximum points from two games and whoever wins tonight will be guaranteed a place in the last 32 - while a draw could still see both go through if AJ Auxerre fail to beat KS Amica Wronki in the group's other match. The hosts are without Finnish defender Juha Reini with an achilles injury, but are at full strength otherwise. Meanwhile, Rangers are missing Gregory Vignal, Maurice Ross and Paolo Vanoli, who can all play at left-back, although Michael Ball has recovered from a foot injury and fills that role. Striker Steven Thompson is out with an ankle injury but Alex Rae returns from suspension to boost the midfield.
  The match is under way.
AZ get the match underway kicking from left to right in red shirts and white shorts. Rangers are all in blue.
2'  First sign of danger for the Rangers defence. A surging run on the left from Tim de Cler results in a pinpoint cross, but the referee blows for an infringement.
5'  Rangers are finding their feet on a bitterly cold evening. A nice interchange between strike pair Dado Pršo and Nacho Novo just fails to come off.
6'  Croatian Pršo looks on form already. He gets the ball 30 metres out before firing a shot straight at goalkeeper Henk Timmer.
8'   ( 1 - 0 ) Landzaat (Alkmaar) scores!
8'  AZ score a superb team goal. The move starts down the left with a defence splitting run from Stein Huysegems. His pass finds Martijn Meerdink in the area, whose perfect lay off is met by the on-coming Danny Landzaat, who smashes the ball past Stefan Klos.
9'  AZ are full of confidence and nearly add a second as Meerdink's half-volley goes just wide of the post.
12'  Rangers have been stunned by the ease in which their defence was breached by AZ. It is hard to imagine a better worked team goal than the one that has put the home side ahead.
15'  AZ may be forced to make a change soon. Michael Buskermolen is limping heavily and will have to come off.
17'  Rangers appear to have settled down from that early setback. The impressive Pršo has a shot blocked and then Fernando Ricksen, playing against his former club, delivers a perfect cross which is scrambled clear by the home defence.
19'   Lindenbergh (in) - Buskermolen (out) (Alkmaar)
20'  Landzaat should have added his second goal. He bursts through the Rangers defence but his shot is superbly saved by Klos.
22'  The match is an entertaining one, and it is easy to see why both teams are doing well at the moment. AZ's overall play is just the superior but Pršo looks impressive for the visitors.
23'   Ball (Rangers) is cautioned by the referee.
The Englishman is cautioned for deliberate handball.
24'  An almighty scramble in the AZ defence results in Ball chipping into the box, where Marvin Andrews fires over the crossbar.
27'  If the scoreline stays this way, then AZ will qualify for the knockout stage. There are plenty of goals in the other match, with Auxerre leading Amica Wronki 3-1.
30'  Peter Lřvenkrands has been quiet for Rangers tonight. However, the Dane suddenly springs into life, producing an impressive turn and shot that just goes over the home crossbar.
32'  More news from the other Group F match, where Auxerre now lead 4-1. That win already looks assured, giving huge significance to their final fixture away to Rangers.
34'  More good play on the AZ left sees a deep cross met by Kenneth Perez, who heads over the crossbar while under pressure from a Rangers defender.
36'  Rangers miss a golden chance to level. A dire mistake from defender Barry Opdam, who lets the ball run under his foot, leaves Novo with a clear strike on goal. However, the Spanish forward shoots straight at Timmer with the goal beckoning.
40'  It looks like AZ will take this slender lead into the break, with under five minutes now remaining in the half.
43'  De Cler has been a thorn in the Rangers defence all evening. He cuts inside from his left-wing position and fires a powerful shot that is well saved by Klos.
  The referee blows for half-time.
A thoroughly entertaining half has finished with AZ leading courtesy of Danny Landzaat's superbly worked strike. However, Rangers should be on level terms with Nacho Novo failing to capitalise on Barry Opdam's error.
  The second half begins.
46'   Namouchi (in) - Lřvenkrands (out) (Rangers)
46'  Rangers begin the second half looking to overturn their single goal deficit.
48'  Rangers have to try and get back into this match, with a tricky final fixture against Auxerre still to come.
49'  A mistake by de Cler, who treads on the ball, allows Pršo some space - but the Croatian fires his shot just too high.
51'  Rangers win a free-kick which is floated into the box. Both Marvin Andrews and Jean-Alain Boumsong go up for the header and cause a bit of chaos before the ball is eventually cleared.
54'  Some good approach play by substitute Olaf Lindenbergh for AZ. He finds Perez on the edge of the area and the Danish forward turns and fires in a powerful shot which is well kept out by Klos.
56'  Novo and Pršo are combining well again for Rangers. This time Novo beats his marker and sends in a low cross which is well held by Timmer.
58'   De Cler (Alkmaar) is shown a yellow card.
The wing-back is carded for fouling Nacho Novo.
61'  Rangers are awarded a dangerous free-kick on the left but Ricksen's cross is a poor one and the ball is cleared.
63'  Rangers win their first corner of the game.
64'  The ball is played in looking for the on-rushing Boumsong. The French defender gets his head to the cross but his effort drifts harmlessly wide.
66'  Total confusion between Ball and Klos in the Rangers defence. Ball eventually clears but only as far as Barry van Galen who sees Klos out of his goal. His looping header looks like it is floating in, but Klos races back and catches the ball before it goes over the line.
68'  Auxerre have added a fifth goal against Amica Wronki. It is not good news for Rangers as goal difference could still play a part in this group.
70'  Rangers are pressing for the equalising goal. A Ricksen corner causes confusion and Andrews turns and shoots, but his effort is well saved by Timmer.
71'   Malcolm (Rangers) is booked.
The Rangers midfield player is cautioned for chopping down Huysegems.
72'   Hughes (in) - Malcolm (out) (Rangers)
73'  Boumsong is playing further and further forward for Rangers. He is fouled on the AZ left but the resulting free-kick is cleared by the home defence.
74'  Boumsong is again looking threatening. His long-range shot is well struck but goes straight into the arms of Timmer.
76'  AZ have won a free-kick on the left, deep in the Rangers half.
77'  Perez produces a good delivery and Rangers only just manage to scramble the ball clear.
79'  AZ are down to 10 men because Joris Mathijsen needs to replace a contact lens in his eye.
80'  Just 10 minutes remain in Alkmaar and the home side are still on course to reach the last 32 of the UEFA Cup.
81'  Rangers appeal for a penalty after Stephen Hughes' shot strikes an AZ defender. They claim it hits the arm, but the referee waves away the appeals and the ball goes behind for a corner.
82'  Rangers nearly make it 1-1. The resulting corner causes confusion and Hughes' header is cleared off the line with Timmer beaten.
83'  Rangers are piling forward. Pršo suddenly break clear but he is denied by a superb last-ditch challenge.
84'   Ramzi (in) - Van Galen (out) (Alkmaar)
87'  Quick break from AZ. Great control and skill from Perez in midfield. He releases Meerdink, whose shot flashes wide of the goal.
88'   Nelisse (in) - Huysegems (out) (Alkmaar)
89'  Time is running out for Rangers. They need a goal to prevent AZ from sealing their place in the last 32 of the competition.
90'  There are three minutes of extra time to be played.
  The final whistle is blown.
AZ seal their place in the knockout stages with an entertaining but narrow win over Rangers. Danny Landzaat's first half goal proves decisive but the Scottish side will feel they deserve something from the game after a powerful second half display.
