Does it really matter if the West isn't on top?
« on: January 21, 2005, 03:31:30 PM »
Of course it would be nice to see the West get airplay/video play, but really what would it change?  The music is still still gonna be tight (to us) whether or not the rest of the world is bumping it.  So who cares?  What's the difference if you don't see mostly west coast videos or hear west coast songs on the radio?  The music is gonna be the same regardless.  I'm gonna listen to it just as much whether it gets air play or not.

Well I donno if I really have an explanation for it right now, but personally, I think it's all about respect and the fact that exposure and all that leads to many other things in the progression of the west coast. I'll get back at you with it.

Yes it does matter, to an extent, and this is why.......Say you're at your job and you've been working your ass off the last 3 months because your boss is gonna pick either you or your co-worker to give a raise to, but you've noticed your co-worker has done nothing but slack off while he's at work, get there late, leave early, etc....basically you've put in a TON more work and your final product is better...well when it comes time for the promotion your co-worker gets it because his daddy is the owner of the company....you'd be pissed as hell, right?....Well, I kinda see the same thing happening with the westcoast in hip hop. The eastcoast almost always has a monopoly because of different connections from inside....ofcourse, this is the same with just about anything in life....so, is it fair? No...but do I see it changing? Not drastically...

well lack of sales will make rappers not want to put out an album, or even fuck with rap anymore.

because you work hard doesnt mean that the east doesnt work hard. shit, the south came from nothing and look at them today. and if my coworker was the son of the owner and gets promoted faster i would be mad but thats life. i listen to west coast rap and i dont see it as very inavative (or however the fuck you spell it) i mean its good but at the same time its same old. thats why cash money lost alot of listeners and how the west did to. up top has always been making their tracks more up to date. the only exeption i can think of this is dre, but then dres always the exeption

Unless New York Moves to California, it will always be the main source of commercialism. (is that a word?)

MTV, CBS, ABC, NBC, are all located in New York... L.A. needs to push itself more as does Chicago, but You can't expect these companies to move around the world. It's a lot harder to get a westcoast artist on an MTV apperance if they have to fly across the country.... while any New York rapper could jump in their car and get there within 20 minutes.

Yes it does matter, because the East Coast just doesn't have as much style as the West Coast does.  Hip-hop was at it's peak in the mid-90's when the West Coast was running hip-hop.  Then, after the demise of the West Coast in 97, we had to deal with the South and Master P and the shiny suits of the East Coast.  Even the LOX, Jadakiss and all them used to wear shiny suits when it was in style, and I don't care what anyone says, Jay-Z was never much more than an average rapper.

It really does not affect ME cause, in Spain we just don't get much repercussion of what's hot over there in terms of rap music. BUT:

Why it would be nice to be back on top:
- Exposure. You'll hear westcoast tracks all over the place, in the club, in the radio, your friends will ask you for that Bad Azz CD when they used to ask you to download the new Nelly.
- New cats. A lot of upcoming talents that would have not even tried with the actual westcoast situation (no possibilities of blowing up), will appear and new stars will take over the left side.
- Old cats blowing up. Vets in the game will see their chance to blow up and improve their shit.

Why it would NOT be nice to be back on top:
- Over-exposure. Don't you hate it when a song that you love blows up, you hear it 24/7 and end up tired of it? Or when peeps that don't know shit about the west start representing and talking to you about how classic Doggystyle is when they were bumpin Milli Vanilli at the time.
- Commercialization. Westcoast rap would transform more and more into a radio-friendly format in order to gather even more listeners. The spotlight may not mean better music is made but that even wack music blows up.
