How many of ya'll read Scratch magazine?
« on: March 24, 2005, 03:28:08 AM »
With the Source going bankrupt and wasting all their journalistic integrity on Benzino, and with XXL looking like a soft porn magazine, Scratch seems to be the most authentic hip-hop magazine on the shelves.  I bought the issue with Dre on the cover, and I've skimmed through the new one, I may subscribe, it's dope, they are really about the music, and not about entertainment and sensationalism.

One of my favorite articles, is every month they have a producer talk about what they would do if they could remix one of the classic albums.  This time they had Daz talking about the Doggystyle album.  (He even takes some subtle shots at Dre and Kurupt, even though it's not that kind of magazine.  In his imaginary remix of the album he had DJ Premier remixing "PUMP PUMP", and himself remixing about 3 of the tracks he claimed he produced himself, 1 of them he said Dre stole it off his drum machine, lol.

Anyway, there are many dope articles in there, it focuses primarily on the producer, and the music making process.  It deserves some props, I hope it stays in business and doesn't end up like Rap Pages and Blaze magazine.

I occasionally buy some of their issues, it can be quite interesting. I still prefer XXL above Scratch, since Scratch is mainly orientated at producers I know people like Adjoo who are into the producing game love that mag.

I read that Dre interview and that was dope. It seems like a proper music mag for real music fans and not aimed at dumb 15 year old girls like the rest of the garbage.

Is there any articles any one has scanned up?

that's my favorite mag by far.  They have product reviews every issue on the newest production hardware,  they talk about classic samples, they have producer profiles.  The best thing about the mag is the 'tool box' feature they put in the interviews, so you can see what gear the producers use.

Remember, XXL is about double the size of Scratch magazine, if they were equal in length, you might prefer Scratch, but they are just an upstart magazine.
