how do u put a picture on the left side (avatar)....

i know its kinda dumb to ask cuz i been here for a while, but how do put up A picture so it can show up on the left side or bottom by where u post.....i think its called an avatar....can anyone tell me how to put pics up on here.. ??? cuz i tried it but i got a red x...thanks
