Before someone uses this as “official news” please read the following disclaimer.
Disclaimer:  Even though I have stated this many times before I will state for one final time: Although there are similarities to my screen name and his professional name I am NOT Mel-Man.  I am what is called an “anonymous source”.  You can call me “Beat Throat”, just don’t call me Mel-Man.
This was typed and prepared on Friday but posted today, Sunday the 19th.  Happy fathers day to all the fathers out there

Everyone and their mama wanna know what the status of Detox is.  Well, the status is that Dre is trying to focus in and get it done.   Some people wonder, why is he spending time on Eve then?  Well he needs some other project to work on when he wants to step back from Detox. Plus Eve is great to work with and it gets Dre into a good groove working with her.  The main problem with Detox is that Dre has put an incredible amount of pressure on himself to make Detox the mind blowing album everyone is expecting.  Dre could just say fuck it and quit working and go on vacation for the rest of his life.  But he’s in the studio working his tail off day and night trying to put together a great album for all of you. FOR ALL OF YOU. That’s why Dre has stopped and started Detox so many times.  He’s trying to find the direction that gives him that gut feeling that “this is it”. We got so many beats sitting around that will never get used its crazy. A number of beats recorded during previous Detox sessions have already been used for other artists as well, but until Dre gets that feeling that he found what he is looking for, Detox won’t get released.   The positive news is that I think Dre is close to finding the magic.   A big question I get is why is Dre using all of these beats from other producers on Detox.  My answer is don’t believe the hype or the word of these guys claiming they will be on Detox.  A lot of producers WANT to be on Detox and THINK they deserve to be on Detox but it don’t matter what they think, it only matters what Dre thinks.  And Dre wants to produce the entire thing himself.  The only question is if Dre will find 16-18 tracks of his own that he feels are good enough to be DETOX beats.  I think he will come close.  Dre ain’t stupid though.  Some of the top producers out there are submitting beats for Detox.  Dre would be stupid to tell them to stop.  Dre is tossing out a large percentage of the beats he’s getting.  Most of the ones hes keeping with be used on other Afttermath/Shady albums.  It is probably a shock to some of these producers ego’s but if it ain’t a DETOX beat its getting thrown in the garbage can along with all the John Doe producer beats out there.   But perhaps Dre will get a magical beat from somebody that just blows him away and is up to par with the shit Dre is doing.  If so Dre may use it on Detox. So Dre is in a win/win situation with all these other producers submitting beats.   As far as the guest list there is no way to know who will make it.  Dre wants to work with all the people on Aftermath and a lot of old friends from Ruthless and Death Row, plus a few legends outside of Dre’s old and current labelmates.  But we are so far away from a final tracklist there is no way to give you a specific guest list.  It also depends on who steps up to the mic and delivers a verse strong enough to match up to the beats.  If you step up there unfocused and mumbling your verse you ain’t gonna make the cut.  And if you aren’t willing to stand in the booth and redo your verse a lot of times until Dre is satisfied you might as well not even show up.
As far as musicians and co-producers go Dre will involve most of the “2001” crew, but it will be on a more limited basis.  Dre is looking for a new sound and for that he is working with some people with fresh ideas and grooves.  Right now if I were to guess, I would guess that Focus and/or Hi-Tek will be to Detox what Mel-Man was to 2001.   Dre really likes what those 2 are doing.  Musically and instrumentation wise, whoever steps up with some innovative rhythms and sounds and riffs will be conducted by Dre to form the Detox orchestra.  Every time Dre has changed sounds he has always done it with a new group of musicians.  Detox will be no different.  So although some of us on the 2001 crew will be a part of Detox it will probably be a much smaller role and a fresh group of musicians and co producers will get a shot to make their mark.  The only thing I know is that Detox will not sound anything like 2001.  Dre is really trying to leave a permanent dent on the sound of music with the musical atomic bomb he hopes Detox will be.  So if you want that type of album you will just have to be patient and wait for the release of Detox sometime next year.   All you need to know is that Dre is doing everything he can to make Detox an album you won’t ever forget.  If it doesn’t live up to your expectations it won’t be for a lack of effort and hard work.  Dre will shed a lot of blood, sweat and tears trying to make Detox the best album possible for himself and for you all. I won’t make any promises or show up here boasting how great Detox is going to be.  After Rakim’s oh My God fell through I learned I need to keep my mouth shut.  I don’t know how it will turn out.  However I wouldn’t bet against Dre.  I hope you keep the faith in Dre, like he has kept the faith in you, his fans.  Dre wants Detox to be a great big thank you from the bottom of his soul to all of you, especially all of his true fans who never gave up on him and supported him through thick and thin.
As I say goodbye (for now), I (we) want to thank all of you for your support and for allowing me to share my love of music with you.  It has truly been an honor.  I am very blessed.  I will talk to you all someday down the road.  Stay positive, keep the peace, keep supporting Dre and the Aftermath family and most of all I want to wish all of you much love and happiness. Until we meet again, Peace.

thanks again for the update... Dre is definately a pioneer because he is always expanding his musical limitations... its good that he is trying to develop this "new" sound rather than revisiting the past... i like dres old sound (like most people on this board), but i also wanna see what else he can do... also, i dont know much about Hi-Tek, but his beats have been fire, so thats good news too... peace

well I hope he does satisfy me with this.  I gotta say it will be extremely hard to top the chronic and 2001, and I don't really think its possible, but I hope he proves me wrong.

I'm wondering if you ever really heard some of the possible Detox tracks. What does the drums sound like? Is it melodic or more focused on rhythm? Tell us about it, if you know about it ....

how many people thought Dre would come with an album as great as "2001"? not many but he came with an album that was almost as good as The Chronic. if he tops "2001" Dre will undoubtedly go down as the greatest hip hop producer of all time and maybe as a top 3 producer/all genres of all time. shit how many people in hip hop can say that they´ve 3 dropped multi platinum/classic albums with 7 years apart from one another? not 1 single person so if Dre pulls that off he´s a motherfuckin genius.

Although I have my doubts as to when it will show up, I have no doubt in my mind that ''Detox'' will be a great and innovative album. Of course no-one can say if it will be a classic, but mellowman's post really makes it seem like he's putting his all into this project. ''2001'' was worth the wait. I'm confident that this will be too.

Mellowman, thanks again for returning here and sharing your info with us. I know that its truly appreciated, and good luck with all of your future endeavours.
