Greatest Band in the world is now....
« on: June 24, 2005, 08:25:59 PM »
The White Stripes.   Really no question about it, they're head and shoulders above any other band recording music today.  They make U2, Oasis, the Chili Peppers, etc. all look like amateurs.  Incredible talent.

Meg White interviews Jack White about ‘Get Behind Me Satan’

Meg:  "Jack are these songs about you?"
Jack:  "No Meg, they're about you."
M: "I wish"
J: "No you don't. You know I don't write about myself or my friends, let alone my sister."
M: "I thought maybe you made an exception after coming out of the closet."
J: (purrs)

M: "Can you tell me a little bit about the album cover?"
J: "I don't know Meg, can you tell me a little bit about the universe?"
M: "You want to talk quantum physics or quantum mechanics?"
J: "Shut up"

M: "What does 'Blue Orchid' mean to you?"
J: "The same thing pizza means to you."
M: "Jack, why can't you be cool?"
J: "Because you're trying to trick me again!"
M: “Jack the only trick I ever played on you was never tricking you at all."
J: "You're right."

M: "Your voice sounds really high on this record like the old days."
J: "I noticed that too."
M: "Want a cigarette?"
J: "Shut up"

M: "Was this album pleasant for you to make?"
J: "It's always pleasant to work with you Meg"
M: "I know that, but did you enjoy yourself?"
J: "This album was cursed when we started, and then suddenly came around near the end. Then I started to enjoy it, Remember?"
M: "Yeah I remember."

J: "Anything else "you" would like to know?"
M: "Only if you're happy with the record."
J: "Yes I am. I think it's our most dense sounding record yet. Don't you?"
M: "Shut up."

J: "Want to make another one?"
M: "Hmmmmmm ... With you?"
J: (purrs)

I just think they're pretty refreshing.  I'll tell you why I think that....

First, just the simplicity of everything they do.  nothing complicated, they're not pretending to be something they're not.  They're not writing songs that take 2 weeks to produce and structure, they just go in the studio, and make music.  Their last album took a week to make.

Second, in Rock at least, there's two trends.

Aggression, and pity.

Either the band is so loud, and mad, and wild that they're out of control, and lashing out at everything, or they're trying to be so pitiful they want you to cry about them.  Staind comes to mind.

I hate the way they sound with their voices too.  They want you to feel depressed for them, or they're singing in this theatrical "There's no-one but uuuuuuuuuu" bullshit that sounds like they think they're serious.

White Stripes? They're off key, he's singing like an idiot "When ya gonna ring mah doorbell, mah doorbell, when ya gonna ring my doorbell" They don't want anybody to take them serious.  They're just making music.

Even though it's loud, it's not aggression.  They're not lashing out at anybody, they're not pretentious enough to think that they've got anything important to push down somebody's throat.  They're just making music... young, energetic, loud, healthy, natural sounding music.  You have a guitar.  You play it loud.  You have drums.  You beat on them.  You have a piano, you bang the keys like a drum, because after all, it has 80 hammers in it.

Another thing is they have an interesting theory about threes.  They think that 3 is the magic number, lol.  I.E., a table needs three legs.  Twos too few, four is unneccesary.  There's three chords in rock, three chords in blues.  There's three elements of songwriting, melody, rhythm, and storytelling.... there's three sounds on their album, guitar, drums, and vocals.  There's only two people in their group, but if they added a third, there would be 4 sounds at the same time, fucking it all up since he sings.

Another thing that's funny, is that they used to be married apparently, but refuse to call themselves anything but sister and brother.  Jack says that the media wasn't happy with them simply being sister and brother, it was too simple for them, so they had to create a story where they used to be married, to make it more interesting.  He wants it to just be about the music and them performing, but the media wants them to be something more than normal, something more than brother and sister.

Now; they ARE something more than brother and sister, but obviously they tell people that because they don't want their love life to be anybody's business.  I think it's hilarious... every interview tries to get them to admit it, and every interview they ask them things (seperately) like "what were your parents like, meg?" and she'll go "The same as Jacks!"  LOL

And finally, it's pretty interesting to see them interact on stage.  They switch songs in the middle into new songs, then back into other songs, and improvise all over the place without even looking at each other, even though they refuse to rehearse or plan out what they're going to do before hand.

Refreshing to me, much much more exciting than any other band out today.

A very good band? Yes. The best in the world right now? No.

They have some fantastic songs though. Seven Nation Army is easy one of the best songs of this century so far. They played Glastonbury last night (Headline act for Friday) and they were more then good. The covers of Jolene and I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself are infectious.

Speaking of Glastonbury, Killers played yesterday. They were shit hot. Zutons were excellent (everyone should check out there debut album). Coldplay are playing today with Keane, Coral, Kiaser Chiefs and New Order. And then Brian Wilson tomorrow, which I am already excited about, even if it is only on the TV.

Anyone heard anything of a band called the Magic Numbers yet? Supporting Brian Wilson. They are an extremely promising young band.

That kept her there in our minds for days
Weeks and months it was
I was that amazed and there she stays
Surrounded by the what-ifs and the maybes
