2pac "Me and My Girlfriend" or Nas"Gave You Power"
« on: July 03, 2002, 11:58:30 AM »
Both songs use a gun as a metaphor.  I think Pac may have stolen the idea from Nas' album, "It Was Written." Because Nas' album came out Spring 96' and Pac's was Fall 96'.

Pac's song is performed with a much higher level of intensity and excitement then Nas' monotone rhyme style.  Pac expresses his love for the gun in a similar effort as he would the love for a woman, and for that reason Pac's song is more effective.  Nas is storytelling, while Pac song not only tells a magnificent story, but it also projects it with all the violence, love, emotional truth, agony, and revenge that would permeate in a Shakespeare play, like "Romeo and Juliet."

Pac is the greatest ever, a true legend, and modern day folk hero.

Me and My Girlfriend. However, I highly doubt Pac stole the idea from Nas, since:

1. Makaveli was completed at least 3 months before its actual release date. I wouldnt be surprised if Pac's song was recorded first, though I dont know for sure.

2. The two songs are actually very different. In Nas's song, he IS the gun, while in Pac's song, he uses a woman as an analogy to portray his gun.

Yeah, I like Nas's better of course, but if the emotion factor is a question, it probably is true that a Gun wouldn't be too happy to be a Gun.

I love "Me and My Girlfriend", but I can honestly say I was blown away when I first heard "I Gave You Power". They both use guns as metaphors in different ways though but I think Nas used them better, he explained things better imo. Production wise it's hard to choose between them though, 'Pac's got that sort of spanish feel to it, and his voice rides the beat perfectly, especially when the hook kicks in, it's almost like you can imagine him just riding off into the sunset with his 'girlfriend'  ;D. "I Gave You Power" has more of a dark feel to it, the production is edgy, fitting not only Nas' voice and tone but the whole story, and the beat doesn't alienate the song, they fit so perfectly together that it makes you listen intensely to the words.
Hard choice but it's gonna be "I Gave You Power".

I think that if you take one of the 'O's' out of 'Good' it's 'God', if you add a 'D' to 'Evil' it's the 'Devil'. I think some cool motherfucker sat down a long time ago and said 'let's figure out a way to control motherfuckers'.

I like pacs song. But damn i was totally blown away when i heard 'i gave u power'. You tell any rapper to rap 3 verses about you as a gun. 98% of rappers couldn't do it. The lyrics are also amazing. That song is just amazing. A hip hop classic, the shit that goes in the hip hop hall of fame.

please prove it was stolen (by nas in this case).

it is a big coincidence that two songs along those lines dropped at the same time.

I Gave You Power

It's true that both songs use metaphoruses and are finally about guns, but as said before, Pac compares his gun to a girlfriend while still bein Pac, Nas is a gun in his song. Me & My Girlfriend is finally a simplistic song. Pac like worships his gun, Nas just gives u an idea of how a gat would feel if it was a person

How you like me now?  I go blaow
It's that shit that moves crowds makin every ghetto foul
I might have took your first child
Scarred your life, crippled your style
I gave you power
I made you buck wild

Pac is rather about how great his gun is, though the lyrics sound a bit sarcastic

All I need in this life of sin, is me and my girlfriend
Down to ride to the bloody end, just me and my girlfriend

Appart from that I feel the production on I Gave You Power alot more. It sounds dark and fits too a song about a gun, the Me & My Girlfriend beat can't live up to that

I'm not talking bout him stealing it from PAC...lol...Makaveli droped after IWW, NAS stole tha concept to "I gave u power" from "Organized Konfusion".
