Liverpool have confirmed that Boudewijn Zenden has agreed to join them after departing Middlesbrough.

The Dutch international failed to agree a new contract with Boro and has now left The Riverside Stadium after two seasons.

He signed a one-year deal with the Teessiders last summer after spending a season on loan - but Boro failed to convince him his future would be best served with them.

Zenden has now agreed terms with Liverpool after passing a medical and will be unveiled by the UEFA Champions League holders on Monday.

"Bolo Zenden has passed his medical. We have reached an agreement with the player and expect the contract to be signed on Monday morning," said Reds spokesman Ian Cotton.

Zenden's signing is sure to add some extra spice to the opening day of the season for both clubs, as Liverpool travel to Middlesbrough on August 13.

The news will be a blow, if not a shock, to Boro boss Steve McClaren, who will now be looking to bring in a replacement.

Zenden first arrived at Boro as a left winger, but he was converted into central midfield by McClaren following the emergence of Stewart Downing.

With Downing now a fully fledged member of the first team, it will be a central midfielder that McClaren goes after.

He has made a move for Juventus' Stephen Appiah, but that was even before Zenden left and so the likelihood is that McClaren will look for two new midfield signings.
