Laker Brian Cook Undergoes Thumb Surgery

By Mike Bresnahan, Times Staff Writer
4:43 PM PDT, July 18, 2006

Brian Cook became the second Laker to undergo surgery in recent days after an urgent procedure Monday night to repair an open dislocation of the interphalangeal joint of his right thumb.

Cook was involved in a freak accident Monday while playing a pickup basketball game at the trendy Sports Club LA in West Los Angeles. The thumb on his right hand--his shooting hand--was torn open after he hit the backboard while blocking a shot.

"I blocked the shot and the ball went out to half court," Cook said Tuesday. "My thumb pretty much did too."

Cook had a pin inserted into the thumb and will wear a splint for about three weeks. He will begin playing in about eight weeks and is expected to fully recover by the time training camp starts in early October.

The surgery was performed at Centinela Freeman Regional Medical Center by Dr. Steven Shinn, a hand specialist with the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Group.

Cook, 25, averaged career highs of 7.9 points and 3.4 rebounds last season, his third in the NBA. The forward is under contract to the Lakers for one more season at $1.8 million, after which he would become a restricted free agent.

Cook, who also averaged a career-best 19 minutes per game last season, will have to work for more playing time next season following the Lakers' recent acquisition of free agent Vladimir Radmanovic, a lanky forward who also scores mainly from the perimeter.

"My spirits are high," Cook said. "They said I won't have any problems getting back. I'll be able to work on other stuff in my game. I can still work on my legs, get quicker, and I can work on my left hand. This is going to make me ambidextrous."

Last Saturday Lakers guard Kobe Bryant underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee to clean out scar tissue and loose cartilage. Bryant is expected to be out eight to 12 weeks and could miss the start of training camp.

Yup, I honestly think he got that last roster spot on lock...Pinnock will probably spend a year overseas, and Wafer should definitely develop his game some more in the D-League before returning...PeACe

Coach Rambis just wanted to rest him, they already know what he's capable of, he's got nothing more to prove in the Summer League...

Lakers' Mihm to get ankle surgery
Team center's operation is to remove scar tissue.

El SEGUNDO – Los Angeles Lakers center Chris Mihm will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right ankle to remove scar tissue, it was announced today. The surgery will take place Wednesday and will be performed by Dr. Phillip Kwong, a foot specialist with the Kerlan Jobe Orthopaedic Group.

It is expected that Mihm will wear a protective boot for two to three weeks and will be able to play in four to six weeks. He is expected to fully recover by the start of training camp.

Mihm, who injured his right ankle in the closing seconds of the Lakers March 12 contest versus Seattle after tallying 20 points, 13 rebounds and three blocked shots, missed the next 17 games because of the severe sprain. Despite logging 14 minutes in the team’s regular season finale April 19 versus New Orleans/Oklahoma City, Mihm was forced to sit out the Lakers entire First Round series against Phoenix because of the injury.

In 59 games (56 starts) last season, Mihm averaged a career-best 10.2 points on better than 50 percent (.501) shooting from the field while averaging 6.3 rebounds and 1.24 blocks in a career-high 26.1 minutes. In addition to missing games because of the ankle injury, he also sat out six games in February because of a sprained right shoulder. On the year, Mihm recorded seven double-doubles while leading the team in scoring once and in rebounding on 16 occasions.

In two seasons with the Lakers, Mihm is averaging 10.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.35 blocks.

Over his six-year NBA career, he has posted averages of 8.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.07 blocks in 395 games (251 starts)
