The Lakers erased an 18-point halftime deficit to defeat the Rockets, 112-101, in a double-overtime thriller on Friday. Kobe Bryant scored a season-high 53 points, including 12 in extra sessions, to go along with 10 rebounds and eight assists, while Smush Parker added 17 points.

Welcome to the Lakers Fantasy File. This weekly column will focus on all things Lakers as it regards to Fantasy Basketball and the new Lakers Fantasy game on Lakers Courtside Connection that gives you a chance to win tickets to Lakers games and the grand prize, Courtside Seats to a game next season.

Week 8 - 12/18/06 - 12/24/06

Last week's injury scare involved Kobe Bryant and this week's injury reality involves Forward Lamar Odom. Lamar left Tuesday’s game against the Rockets after two minutes of play when he twisted his knee after a shot. It was later diagnosed as a moderate sprain of his medial collateral ligament in his right knee.

Week 8 Schedule

12/19 @ Chicago
12/20 @ Minnesota
12/22 @ New Jersey

Lamar is expected to miss between 4-8 weeks which would put him in line to return between mid-January and mid-February. It will be interesting to see how Odom recovers from what is really the first significant injury of his basketball career. Let's all just hope for a speedy recovery for the Lakers and your fantasy team's sake.

While this is a huge loss for the Lakers, it will most likely benefit most of them as far as fantasy stats are concerned. Luke Walton slides into Lamar’s seat as the 2nd scoring option and the domino effect continues bumping up the point guard duo of Smush Parker & Jordan Farmar and the Center tandem of Kwame Brown & Andrew Bynum. Increased minutes and responsibility will benefit all of them.

The injury also opens up a starting slot for one of the Lakers sharp-shooting big men, Vladamir Radmanovic & Brian Cook. Both have been hampered by injuries throughout the season, but will be looking to step up given this opportunity for floor time. Radmanovic started the Lakers first full game without Lamar, but only saw 18 minutes as Brian Cook & Ronny Turiaf were subbed in liberally. Head Coach Phil Jackson has not named a formal rotation so monitor the situation over the weekend and see who gets the most playing time. Any one of these guys becomes a viable play if they can distinguish themselves and get 25-30 minutes a game.

The Lakers schedule includes 3 games this week and while all will be played away from STAPLES Center, all the opponents are known quantities. The Lakers have previously matched up with and beaten all three of these clubs earlier in the season in Los Angeles.

Chicago and Minnesota are both in the leagues top 10 in points allowed. Chicago proved it earlier in the season as the Lakers could only muster 82 points (albeit in a win). The Lakers are currently 6th in the league in scoring, going off for almost 102 points a game, but both Minnesota & New Jersey held the Lakers under that total in their first meetings.

 Kobe Bryant
PPG
26.6  RPG
4.9  APG
4.5
His points per game average continues to rise, as do the rebounds per game, while maintaining his assist numbers. The knee is only getting stronger and surely he will look to score more with Lamar on the shelf.
Last 5 games: 28.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, 4.0 assists
Consistently great - as always, START HIM

 Lamar Odom
PPG
17.5  RPG
8.7  APG
4.9
A career year de-railed by landing awkwardly in the paint. Could be on the shelf for a month, maybe two. Keep him on the IR if you have a spot, otherwise you’ll have to burn one of your bench spots while he’s recovering.
Shelved for 4-8 weeks - SIT HIM

 Luke Walton
PPG
13.0  RPG
4.6  APG
3.8
This guy just keeps putting up numbers night in and night out. He had his first really bad shooting night Wednesday when asked to pick up the scoring slack for the first time, but he plays too smart for that to continue.
Last 5 games: 16.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, 4.2 assists
I doubted him last week and he blew up. With Lamar out he's a must play - START HIM

 Kwame Brown
PPG
8.9  RPG
6.3  APG
2.2
Getting Minutes, but not getting it done from the fantasy perspective. It would seem logical that someone this tall and wide would grab more boards and block more shots, but it just doesn’t happen.
Last 5 games: 12.9 points, 6.6 rebounds, 1.0 assists
Should perform well in at least two of the three upcoming games. I'm going to give him a shot - START HIM

 Andrew Bynum
PPG
7.1  RPG
5.4  APG
1.0
The kid loves playing against big name big men and had the best game of his career against Minnesota on November 7th. Rolling into the Windy City to face Ben Wallace should get the young man fired up as well.
Last 5 games: 3.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, 0.8 assists
Just not enough time to make a significant contribution - SIT HIM

The Los Angeles Lakers created Lakers Fantasy to reward our fans and the best part is, you can win by playing just once or by playing every game. Before each regular season game, select which Lakers will have the most points, most rebounds, most assists and most blocked shots. If you're right for all 4 categories for a specific game, you will be entered to win our monthly prize, 2 tickets to see your Lakers and an invitation to greet the players with a High 5 as they enter the court. Or you can play for our season long contest and try to win Courtside Seats. Each time you correctly guess which Lakers players will have the most points, most rebounds, most assists and most blocked shots for the selected game, you get a point. If you have the most points at the end of the season, you win.

Points – Think 24, think Mamba, think right and pick Kobe Bryant every single night.

Assists – With Lamar out, it’s Kobe’s category to lose. Luke Walton has seen his assist numbers jump of late and is a contender to dish it out while Lamar is sidelined.

Rebounds – Here’s where things in Lakers Fantasy will get interesting. Odom had been dominating this category all season and his injury could cause the rebounds category to mash up like Blocks. In the first game post-Odom, Kobe and Luke shared the crown, but you could justifiably give any of about 5 guys the nod. It’s a toss up, but Kobe, Luke, & Kwame are the favorites based on past results and playing time.

Blocks – Still a mess as usual. Four different players lead the team in the past three games. I’ll stick with Andrew Bynum, but this is where the champs will be separated from the chumps. If you can figure out this mystery (and rebounds for the time being) on a regular basis, you could be sitting courtside for a game next season.

I gotta give Smush some props. That dude had a real killer look in his eye and he just went off late in the 4th + OT. If he could play like that every night, no one would worry about when Farmar is gonna start.

He played great in the 2nd half...but he needs to stop acting like a bitch when phil takes him out of the game...that shit he did in the 3rd quarter was not cool, Lakers fans don't even like him anymore and he's going to do shit like that's going to make us dislike him even more......he did the same shit in the pre-season to kurt rambis when he took him out of the game....he pouts when he gets bench, can't do that...

If plays the way he did against the Spurs and Rockets, and helps the Lakers win games, Laker fans will get off his back.

And i want to see Turiaf get more minutes.

And we're going to miss Lamars rebounding, and the way he pushes the ball and gets us eazy points.

Damn Kobe  :o, the way he can knock down incredible tough shots is amazing ... props to Smush to step it up in key moments.. As I predicted, we're gonna suffer a lot on the boards , without Lamar

Tonight the Lakers welcome in former Laker Caron Butler and the Washington Wizards. The Wizards are riding two game winning streak but still own one of the NBA's worst road records (2-8). The Lakers got back on track by beating the Houston Rockets in a double OT thriller Friday Night. Kobe Bryant finished the night with a season high 53 points and missed a triple double by just two assists. Smush Parker added 17 points to go along with Brian Cook's 10 points and 7 rebounds.

We played just fine. Kinda hard to win when the other team doubled your free throw attempts.

Kobe played EXCELLENT! 45 Points, 8 Rebounds, 10 Assist, 1 Steal, 1 Block

Shot 62% from the field and kept everyone envolved in the game.

Actually, we didn't play fine, our defense sucked...It's hard to win when you give up almost 150 points. Do you seriously only watch the offense? Cuz I know a lot of people like that, but they're usually the very casual type of basketball fans who don't know much...
