Trauma's Old School Artist of the week - Week 3 12/19/05
« on: December 18, 2005, 01:48:12 PM »
Alright, week 3.  As usual post good or bad.

Artist of the week is.....

Jose Feliciano.  LOL.

This guy is great.  He's an amazing guitar player, has a really flamenco style.

Like so many great musicians, Jose was born blind.  You have got to hear this guy play guitar.  You've actually already heard him, his biggest song is "Feliz Navidad", although that song is nothing at all like his typical style of performing.  This guy used to practice guitar for 12 or 14 hours a day to get as good as he has.

He made a name for himself in the latin market in the 60's, then they pushed him to an American auidence with a cover version of the Door's "Light My Fire".  It's unbelievable if you've never heard his version.  He slows it way down until it's just him and his guitar, it's so beautiful it's creepy.

His specialty is recording cover songs his way.  Song after Song after Song done very creatively with an almost unbelievable acoustic guitar track in the background.  His voice is very powerful as well.

Great songs by him:

Light My Fire
California Dreamin'
Susie Q
Hey Baby
Walk Right In

If you want to hear him go crazy on the guitar, check out "Walk Right in".  Also "Light My Fire" is must hearing.

Jose's still around touring and things.  If you have the Motown 25th anniversary tape (the one where the Jackson 5 reunited and Michael did the first-ever moonwalk), Jose sings "Lonely Teardrops" to tribute Barry Gordy, founder of Motown who got famous writing Lonely Teardrops for Jackie Wilson.

Week 1: Merle Haggard
Week 2: Jerry Butler
Week 3: Jose Feliciano

dude is fucking INSANELY good at the guitar...he also plays using mostly his fingers, in the classical style that's what makes him even more impressive as a guitarist

Yeah, I can get down with some of Jose's stuff. Its real good stuff to just chill out to, I like his cover of the Beatles - Help!, using the guitar instead of singing the "Help" section at the start of the song.

I'll check him out.

Most hip-hop is now keyboard driven, because the majority of hip-hop workstations have loops and patches that enable somebody with marginal skills to put tracks together,...

Unfortunately, most hip-hop artists gravitated towards the path of least resistance by relying on these pre-set patches. As a result, electric guitar and real musicians became devalued, and a lot of hip-hop now sounds the same.

Just listened to the "Help!" cover again for the first time in a while, its actually a horn that does the "Help" line, still a really dope cover though.

Never heard of this guy before, will have to look into it and get back to you.
Well she moved in ways
That kept her there in our minds for days
Weeks and months it was
I was that amazed and there she stays
Surrounded by the what-ifs and the maybes
