Ex-football star Diego Maradona was arrested after causing a disturbance at an airport in Brazil, police say.

The Argentinian was detained at Rio de Janeiro's international airport after rowing with staff.

He is said to have arrived late and thrown objects around the VIP area, which he has since agreed to pay for.

The troubled 45-year-old star had played a game organised by ex-Brazilian star Zico on Wednesday night.

Police arrested him at the airport terminal on Thursday as he was about to return to Buenos Aires.

A police spokesman said: "There was a problem with TAM (airline) staff, it turned nasty and the police were called.

"It got worse with the police and he was detained for resisting arrest."

It is thought Maradona was put on a later flight to Argentina.

However, a friend of the football legend - former Argentina player Alejandro Mancuso - said Maradona was not late and had been well behaved.

He said: "It was an incredible thing.

"We arrived at the airport with Diego very quiet. When they announced boarding, we approached and then they closed the plane door in our faces.

"The anger was logical and justified."

Mancuso said when they asked for an explanation, a TAM worker called police and four armed officers arrived.

An Argentine diplomat visited to airport to resolve the problem.

Maradona has been plagued by health problems, including drug and alcohol abuse and obesity.
