"The Best Of Both...Coasts?!" - November 29, 2002 By : Rud
WCKillaz are reporting that Snoop Dogg and Jay-Z plan on making a joint album which would be the first West meets East collaboration album ever, and could well help in completely squashing the much-publicised East/West coast beef for good, especially as both are considered to be the "kings" of their respective coasts. Snoop is reported to have recently told MTV that the two camps still hadn't "nailed anything in stone," but he's very hyped about the whole idea.

Quik Speaks On Nates Creative Speed! - November 27, 2002 By : Rud
DJ Quik, who produced Nate Dogg's first single "Get Up" off his new album due in February, spoke to Launch recently. He explained that Nate Dogg's laid-back character and often slow-paced singing style is a huge contrast to his songwriting and recording approach : "Nate Dogg is one of the quickest creative people I know other than Tupac, that's not to shun anybody else that I worked with, but Nate is the fastest when it comes to melodies, and when it comes to just being a quick wit. He's the epitome of a fly poker player."

Quik went on to say that Nate's professionalism made it easy to produce the song (which also features Eve) : "Wow, what can you say about perfectionist, tight-ass artists? I look forward to doing it again because it wasn't like working. It was like kicking it."

"Get Up" officially hit radio on Tuesday (26th November) You can expect the new Nate album titled, "Nate Dogg," to hit stores on February 25, 2003 through Elektra Entertainment. Also dont forget that DJ Quik released his "Best Of DJ Quik" collection last week so and pick that up if you havent already!

Snoop Contest Closed! - November 27, 2002 By : Rud
Thanks to all the people who entered the Snoop Dogg "Paid Tha Cost To Be Da Bo$$" Contest! It is now closed and the winners will be contacted and then names published on the site in the next few days!

The correct answer to the question : "What is the name of Snoop's Debut Album" was of course the classic "Doggystyle" - having received some earlier entries that claimed "Snoop Dogg" was confusing as it could be classed as "The Game Is To Be Sold..." i altered the question to make it clear that it was his DEBUT album. Any entries before the alteration with both answers in the answer section were carried through as correct. Snoop's Debut Album was NOT "The Deep Cover Soundtrack" or "The Chronic" or "Paid Tha Cost To Be Da Bo$$" - His debut was his first ever solo release. Whether you got it right or wrong, thanks for all the entries and the support of the site!

Look out for a new contest in the next few days! (Especially 2 Pac fans!)

Nate Dogg is adding the finishing touches to his next solo album titled, "Nate Dogg," due out in February of next year. The new self-titled disc is said to be a more "celebratory affair" than his last release "Music & Me." Nate said : "It's more up-tempo, more party style. The last one was kind of re-introducing myself as a solo artist. This one I'm already rolling from the first joint."

Nate gave a short yet certain message for fans : "Just tell 'em I'm bringing the shit!" The first single is "Get Up" produced by DJ Quik, featuring Eve

Cube Says "No More Friday's!" - November 26, 2002 By : Rud
Ice Cube's latest film, the 3rd in the "Friday" series hit #3 in its release week! It was only beaten by blockbusters, "Die Another Day" & "Harry Potter." "Friday After Next" is on pace to match or surpass previous "Friday" films at the box-office! However, Cube who conceived the franchise and also stars in each of the films says that despite its success, he's happy to end the series - last week Cube said that he wasnt concerned about how it did at the box office : "I'm not really worried about that, at this point all you could do is do a good movie and go from there. I know we got a good movie. He spoke to MTV and said : Sometimes you could start playing number games and try to be #1 or try to make sure it surpasses what the other ones did, but I'm not in the game for that. I am not thinking about ['Friday'] four. No four. This is it."

However the film's director and longtime Ice Cube music-video director, Marcus Raboy, says he hopes that Cube will change his mind : "When we were in the editing, one day Cube said, 'This is probably gonna be the last [one],' I said, 'I'll bet you a $100 there's another "Friday." ' He said, 'I can't even take that bet.' We had to think of it as three as the perfect number in a set. Then you put it out there to the audiences and if the audience is saying, 'We want more, we want more,' I think that's a decision that Cube will make down the line. [He may] say, 'They want more, I'm inspired, I have a great angle on it. It feels like it can be fresh and have a purpose.' Time will tell."

Even though Ice Cube feels its time "Friday" was put to rest, he said that he and his co-star Mike Epps will continue to make movies together : "Our relationship on the set is real cool and real close. All we do is sit around and laugh and joke on each other, kinda like kicking it. The chemistry spills over. I look at him like my little brother. It seems like it all resonates onscreen. We're looking at other things we can do to expand on it. We know people love this combination. That's what we in it for, to give the people what they want."

Since the surprise success of "Barbershop" earlier this year, Ice Cube says executives around "Tinseltown" are throwing plenty of deals at him : "More people want to be in business, but we don't want to just take opportunities now that they're there, I take pride in having a company called Cubevision. I don't want to mess it up because we have the opportunity to make a lot of movies real fast. A lot of quality goes into whatever we're doing. We gotta make sure the product is still very good." He also went on to explain that he has no doubts about what he could do if he weren't constrained to his usual "shoestring budgets" : "If they gave a $100 million, I'll damn sure make it look like $250 million," he laughed. "It's not hard to get that money on the screen and do something off the hook. I really don't need that much money. You don't need a $100 million to make $100 million."

"Torque" (due out in 2003) is the next film we can expect to see Ice Cube in, the filming for that was wrapped up less than a month ago. Although he didn't produce the film or write the script this time around, he did get the opportunity to ride motorcycles in the action flick! : "I'm pretty nice on them, I ain't ready to join the Ruff Ryders yet, but give me three or four more months, I'll be ready. It was fun making the movie though, getting to ride hard."

Cube also spoke on the music angle! As many of you will know Ice Cube is inches from being an official member of the ever growing "Aftermath" crew, and is set to record his next LP under the watchful eye of Dr. Dre, as executive producer : : "I love music as much as I love the movie thing, i'm gonna be on Aftermath as soon as I get the deal signed. It's close, very close. It's just basically making sure we got a deal. We're fine-tuning the deal. We've agreed on most of the numbers."

He also said he hopes to get back to work, either in the studio or on a movie set, in January!

Snoop Records In The "Chuuuch!" - November 26, 2002 By : Rud
For those still unaware of what Snoop Dogg means when he says "Chuuuch!" can now rest at ease. Snoop, whose sixth studio album "Paid Tha Cost To Be Da Boss" is out today, explained it when he spoke to Launch. He told them that the term "chuuuch" was presented to him by his friend and renowned pimp, the Archbishop Don Magic Juan : "It's simply stating that we keep God in everything we do, and we try to be more positive than negative, by us saying chuuuch, it's a positive greeting. And it just brings joy to our heart and soul."

Snoop went on to say that he has been so taken by the new term, that it is also the name of his recording studio! : "You got to have our spirit right here first of all when you making these records, you got to have your mind on the spirit on right so people can feel what you saying."

In related news, Snoop Dogg aired the pilot episode of his "variety show" Doggy Fizzle Televizzle on MTV yesterday - and today his new album hit the shelves - make sure you grab a copy and help push Snoop to #1 this week!

Snoop Resists "Peer-Pressure" @ Smoke Out! - November 25, 2002 By : Rud
MTV report that Snoop Dogg ignored the persistent chanting of "Hit the bong!" from the crowd at the Smoke Out festival on Saturday. He then asked the crowd, "What bong?" and shortly after the 20-foot apparatus that members of Cypress Hill and host Tommy Chong had been toking on earlier was pulled out. Snoop later left the stage without having inhaled any of the chronic smoke! His set ended a full day of performances by artists such as : Everlast, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Slash and Linkin Park DJ Joseph Hahn.

Snoop Dogg arrived via armored vehicle well after 1:00 a.m. - with Warren G, a skull-masked homey, security guards and several other hanger-ons all dressed in some shade of blue! Snoop hit the stage with "Murder Was the Case," then went through his "Death Row", "No Limit" & "Doggy Style Records" back catalogue. Around 20,000 people in the crowd rapped along to nearly every word until the bong came out...Snoop, wearing a wide smile, casually left the stage.

Snoop said backstage that it was a "personal invite" from B-Real that brought him to the fifth Cypress Hill Smoke Out, held this time at the Los Angeles Coliseum : "Me and him go way back, he played on my new record, he played the congas on it. We family like that. This is an annual event for him. I'm local. I'm in the 'hood. So it's a good thing, I appreciate [the invitation]."

Cypress Hill member B-Real spoke on the event and Snoop's sobriety : "Each year you got to try to step it [the show] up. I think it's cool that he [Snoop] would still do it, because it shows that he may not smoke it, but he's still down with the people who recognized him as being one of the frontrunners, as well as Cypress Hill, to pump that whole movement. So for him to be here with us, and Tommy Chong as well, it's great, man."

Surprise performers Bone Thugs-N-Harmony were one of the many acts who praised "Jam Master Jay" : "[Jam Master Jay], Left Eye, every time something like that happens, we always think about Eazy-E [and] all of the fallen soldiers in the game, It's tragic, but unfortunately, it's part of life.", Wish Bone said.

Cube Angry Over Advert - November 23, 2002 By : Rud
AHH are reporting that Ice Cube is attempting to have a controversial commercial for his latest movie, "Friday After Next" pulled from screens. The advert caused controversy as it displays "three African-American women with the words "Ho, Ho, Ho" stamped over them."

Ice Cube said : "It was done out of context [of the movie], marketing people to me are assholes who don't know what the fu*k they are doing."

Cube went on to say that he had nothing to do with the adverts as the decision was taken by the company that is releasing the film, New Line Cinema : "They will pull the ads if they know what's good for them. If they don't, [whatever happens] is on them."

Id like to publically welcome Murrow to the staff here at dubcnn.com - who joined us thanks to Overseer's persuasion! Anyone over at the WCC Forum will know Murrow (Formally Incognito) and many others will know him from when he ran the HipHop-Reviewed site. We have taken on Murrow to help provide us with Articles and some reviews on the site, as I feel at present thats where the site lacks - i want to bring you more content as much as possible. Id also like to welcome elneckio as an official staff member! He has been around since the start helping on the overall design of the site and providing news! However now he has got full news update access and will be updating where possible. All this will help you, the readers, get a better service from dubcnn!

Id also like to advertise we have one job vacancy at present : A Reviewer is required. The reviewer would be exactly that, someone who can review albums, dvds and films related to the westcoast - the person would not have access to news updates unless i delegate that to them at a later date. The candidate must be good writer who can write solid and well-structured text. So if you feel you would like to work for the site and think you can offer something we could use, then please send in any relevant information and at least one sample review to : rud@dubcnn.com and i'll try to get back to as many of you as possible!

C-Bo - Desert Eagle in stores now - November 21, 2002 By : Nima
I suppose all ya'll who support the bay area rap game will have heard of C-Bo's album entitled "Desert Eagle" which was just released. Well you should know that this album was released WITHOUT C-Bo's authorization. So this is basically an unofficial C-Bo album. The way Warlock Records released this LP, which consists 12 unheard C-Bo tracks, is similar to how Black Market records released Brotha Lynch Hung records or Death Row Records released Dead Man Walkin.

For all the real fans out there, wait a bit and pick up "My Lifestyle", sheduled to drop in March of 2003 on C-Bo's West Coast Mafia Entertainment. Thanks to WC2k for lettin' us know about a West Coast Mafia compilation which should drop soon, along with a C-Bo DVD.

Eminem Replies To Murder Inc & Benzino - November 21, 2002 By : Rud
I found this audio over at the HipHopCanada forum. The audio appears to be from the UK hiphop DJ Tim Westwoods show as they state its a world exclusive. As of yet i dont know where this will appear - more than likely a mixtape - but if you havent already heard this you should check it. Eminem appears to reply on behalf of Aftermath & Shady Records to recent comments by both Benzino (regarding Eminem's colour) & also Murder Inc artist Ja Rule, where he stated that if they (Dr.Dre/Eminem) allowed 50 Cent to diss him then Ja would see that Aftermath/Shady Records ceases to exist! Here's a section of lyrics from the track titled, it would seem, "We The Realest Label" :

"50% of it is 50 Cent/the other 50% of it whose colour of skin it is/but if you even considerin taking our label down then you better find our building and fly a fuckin' plane into it/but i aint trying to get to intricate into it/im just trying to give you a little hint for your own benefit"

If you want to hear the rest we have it for you here (Whoever recorded this off the show deserves the credit however i am unaware at present of who did)

Kurupt On "Half Past Dead" & Ja Rule - November 20, 2002 By : Rud
Dogg Pound Gangsta, Kurupt, recently spoke with MTV about his work on just released film - Half Past Dead with Steven Seagal & Ja Rule.

Uncle Steve, man, he was cool with us, he wasn't really tripping with us. There really wasn't no problems, he was very respectful and did his part. He tried to help us out as much as possible with ours. It was a great team we had."

In the movie, Kurupt plays a wise-cracking convict called Twitch, meanwhile offscreen, Kurupt revealed that Seagal introduced him to some new musical methods and he got the action hero up on the latest hip-hop cuts! : "I had to put him up on it from Ja's perspective all the way to mine, I had to play him some of those dainty killer tunes and let him know what's really going on in our world. But Uncle Steve is pretty hip, you dig. He's got songs he's done himself. He sings the blues and he's actually very, very tight. He redid 'Redemption Song' by Bob Marley with all the existing Marleys. What I picked up from him was learning how to play that acoustic guitar, the majority of our off-time, I'd just sit back and Uncle Steve would just be playing the blues."

Kurupt now serves as Tha Row's Senior Vice President, although he has no plans to sign Seagal to a contract dont be surprised if you hear a collaboration between the two : "Oh, definitely, we're going to do something together, we already did something when we was in Berlin [shooting the movie]. I rented studio time when I was out there and I took him in. It was a real low-key spot and he was loving it."

During those four months on German soil, Kurupt built bridges with Ja Rule and laid to rest former animosity they had toward each other : "This movie is what brought us together to even get a chance to meet up with each other and finally talk, this is the first time we actually met since [I dissed him in the song] 'Calling Out Names.' We found out that there's nothing that we really dislike about each other. We became real cool friends."

After ending that "beef" Kurupt found that mad cow disease was another excuse to avoid more "beef!" : "They got the best Tony Roma's cracking [in Germany], Oh man, the ribs is the key to the game because you can't really eat different shit out there. They got that mad cow disease that's out all overseas. That's a problem with the beef. So I'm a pork lover. The ribs is cracking and their barbecue chicken and hot wings. We was eating Tony Roma's every day."

Using the new found strength gained from all that meat-eating he performed all his own stunts in the new film : "I shoot a bazooka, I ain't playing. It knocked me 15 feet in the fucking air but I shot that muthafucka. Boosh! I do my own stunts too, I do the Burt Reynolds man, you know. I was kind of nervous at first, especially when I had to shoot the bazooka. I flew back into the glass, it was some fake glass but it was real glass too. I didn't know where I was going to land, how I was going to land. I've never done that before. It was kind of a shocker."

Kurupt has been working on another movie "Hollywood Homicide" with Harrison Ford and Master P due out in 2003. In one scene he had to jump in the Venice Canal where he as getting chased by Josh Hartnett : "Yeah, water up to my neck, man, i had to run, he's on me and I jump because he's just about to grab me. Ducks is everywhere, I'm swimming to the other side. It's a big one."

"Half Past Dead" opened in cinemas on Friday and grossed a little over $8 million in its debut weekend.

According to HHSO, a gardener is in the process of suing "Westside Connection" member Mack 10 and his wife Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins of the group TLC - for allegedly "stiffing" him on a bill for snapdragons. A hearing for the lawsuit is scheduled for next month which was filed in July. The lawsuit states that Mack 10 and his wife ordered landscaping last year for their gated Moorpark home but never paid the hired gardening firm, Kevin Persons Inc.

Persons claims that the couple owe him nearly $15,000 for providing "50 flats of mixed snapdragons, four 15-gallon plants, sod, sprinklers, tree lighting and 10 square yards of walk-on bark" The gardener claims that he had an oral agreement with the rap artist, although the couple were unable to comment, Persons had this to say about Mack 10 : "He's got more money in cars than what I make in a year!

"Suge Shot Me" = "Nothing Gonna Stop Me?" - November 20, 2002 By : Rud
AHH have reported that the intro to the start of Makaveli - The Don Killuminati has been analyzed by an audio forensic specialist to either confirm or falsify rumours that Tupac says "Suge Shot Me" faintly at the start of the "Bomb First" track. Following the analysis the rumour was proved false on MTV’s "Big Urban Myth" show. The audio specialist, who has also defended heavy-metal artists Judas Priests and Ozzy Osbourne in the 80's against claims of subliminal messages in songs, said that after testing the vocals, it was concluded that the artist says something to the effect of "Nothing gonna stop me" or "From the top."

USA Today Article "Blasts Tupac" - November 19, 2002 By : Rud
Thanks to AllHipHop for this news. In an "opinion piece" article that appeared in the nationally circulated USA Today, film critic Michael Medved, accused Tupac Shakur of using what he called the "show business tendency" to "glorify violent and self-destructive black thugs."

Michael Medved wrote : "Shakur's long criminal record and the almost casual endorsement of violence in much of his music hardly make him a candidate for pop-culture canonization, let alone for a 'peace garden' in his honor, his puzzling posthumous popularity, in fact, reflects the degrading and ultimately racist notion that criminal violence represents an essential and authentic element of African-American identity."

Medved also details Tupac's well publicised arrest record and his history of legal problems and puts over his theory that blacks have to be criminalized in Hollywood in order to gain acclaim, he singles out Denzel Washington's "Training Day" role as an example.

He continued : "Sadly, the cult worship of Shakur demonstrates an ongoing condescension and double standard in attitudes toward African-American males. Since he was a black artist (never mind the fact that he sprang from an educated, intellectual and radical background) many patronizing public figures, white and black, not only accept violent behavior — they expect it."

The latest Tupac release from beyond the grave titled, Better Dayz is to be released on November 26th.

Ice Cube On "Negativity In Hip-Hop" - November 19, 2002 By : Rud
Ice Cube spoke to the BBC about how the shooting of Run DMC member Jam Master Jay raised the profile once more of rap's violent image and insisted it was far from a reality : "It's entertainment. Do people want to go kill Robert De Niro, you know, when he does Casino or whatever? It's music... their music never promoted any kind of violence, Run-DMC was not about that, Run-DMC was about the art, not about the bling bling or the gangsterism, all that kind of stuff came after what Run-DMC had established, which was the art, the poetry and the music. It's just distorted right now."

Ice Cube also re-iterated that rumoured links of the continuing war between rappers from the east and west coasts of the United States is far from the issue in this : "Right now there's no beef in the air. If people got beefs it's personal beefs with each other, but there's nothing that's coastal or bi-coastal about it."

Cube can be seen in "Friday After Next" which hits cinemas in the US on Friday!

Kurupt & Ja Rule Were Put Back In Film - November 16, 2002 By : Rud
According to Launch both Kurupt & Ja Rule were killed in the original version of the new film "Half Past Dead" (Which hit cinemas today) However a few months after filming the movie the director, Don Michael Paul, decided to re-write both of them back into the script. Kurupt was happy with the decision : "When they played the movie originally people did not like the fact that me and Ja died so they had to film me and Ja into the script towards the ending. I love the director for that because the average one might have said, 'Aw. Who cares. I've already done the film,' but he really cares about giving people what they wanted."

Ja Rule also spoke regards how he hopes his acting career takes off as he wishes to be away from the problems associated with rap (Ja Rule currently has "beef" with DMX, Eminem, and Dr. Dre protege 50 Cent) : "It's just crazy that rap takes that dive all the time. And I'm sick of the bullshit. I'm grown. I've got two kids, one on the way. I'm a grown man. I ain't got time for that shit. I can go shoot films, do soundtracks, write and produce soundtracks, do the scores for my movies and have a great time, and I'll still put out music for the people, and guess what? All these idiot rappers that think...they won't be mad at me 'cause I ain't putting out solo albums. You understand, they won't be like yeah, 'Why the fuck is he getting all the radio spins. They won't have to cry about it no more"

"Friday After Next" Premiere! - November 15, 2002 By : Rud
Ice Cube's new film, the latest in the 'Friday' series, titled "Friday After Next" had its premier on Wednesday. According to MTV, Magic Johnson, Orlando Jones and John Witherspoon were some of the celebrities who turned out for the films premiere! (All images shown in update are from the premiere)

Ice Cube, who co-produced, co-wrote and acted in the film, was dressed down in a baseball cap and flannel shirt, however he was delighted with the turn out : "It's good that people are interested in the movie, people love 'Friday' movies, and we came through with this one. This one is Christmas in the 'hood, so it's a different look at what Christmas can be like. ... I wanted to give 'Friday' a new paint job in a way. And I think California Christmas is funny."

Cube continued : "We knew we had something," (about the original "Friday" film) "You know you've got a fun movie when people can walk out of the theater, quote from it and the movie starts to become part of the fabric of the neighborhood. It's a beautiful thing when you've got people out there quoting things that you wrote. I always said I just thought the 'cool people' would like it. [But] everybody loved it. [So] we did a se
