Exactly .. Extremely dreesque, which is cool, but much diff than typical Quik.
I like it, but u can tell he was goin for the Dre sound a lil too much.

UDI & Trauma are actually the only DJ Quik Albums I do not like. I think the mastering is shit on UDI.

2. Way 2 Fonky
3. Safe + Sound
4. Rhythamlism
5. Balance + Options

The rest of Quik's discography doesn't exist to me.  Actually, if I had to narrow it down further, I wouldn't have a problem taking out 4 and 5.

I feel like his first 2 were great and went with the time he made them in,same with safe and sound I just feel like after street gospel,so from 97 on he came into his own more and made music that was more experimental...way 2 fonky is dope tho it might even be better than quik is the name if we romoved the nostalgia/legacy factors and peeped them without any other knowledge cuz quiks groove 2 is pure 🔥🔥🔥🔥

6. Trauma
7. Under the Influence
8. Quik is the Name
9. Way 2 Fonky

Quik's first two albums are classic, but just objectively speaking, they're nowhere near as good as his music from Safe & Sound onward. Everything changed with that album. From that point forward, Quik became much more consistent.

I'd consider ranking Book of David above Safe & Sound. Sonically, BOD is the far superior album, but I just love Somethin 4 The Mood and Summer Breeze so much.

Awesome how much love Balance and Options still gets.  I think it's one of his best as well, yet every time Quik mentions that album, he talks like it's his worst one and he just threw together a bunch of junk to satisfy Arista so he could fulfill his contract and get off the label.

1. Safe + Sound
2. Balance & Options
3. Rhythm-al-ism
4. Quik Is The Name

^ Those are classics.

5. Trauma (different from quik's usual style, but amazing album)
6. The Midnight Life (unaspected comeback)
7. Way 2 Fonky
8. The Book of David (I listen to "Nobody" almost everyday, but overall not that great)
9. Under The Influence (it needed "Swallow Me", some great songs but this is my least favorite)

7. Way 2 Fonky

The last two are good albums but do sound a bit dated now, and I don't listen to them as often as the others. They could do with being digitally remastered and released again. Quik's other three solo albums I haven't checked out yet.

I've always thought the same & never been able to get into this album as much because of the mastering. Wasn't it said it was done on purpose to get that "analog" sound?

Bumpin one on one right now, the vocals are low as shit on that 1, woulda been an impeccable joint if not for that .. That's the diff between Dre n Quik, Dre would never let that happen. Bass drownin out the vocals. Sex crimee too, but not as bad .. Most the joints are on point tho.

This was easily quiks darkest album based on overall mood of the album and the time period in his life...the difference between "well" and "oh well" signifies that so who knows what kind of vision he had for this project... Dre with the production feature is another example especially when 2 years earlier he said "I never put my name on a track that wasn't mine" it's like "oh well" was the feel of the album

yeah there was somethin about quik mixing this whole record in some spectial way. it was nice change from his typical smooth laid back production style, he went and play with more dynamic ''bigger'' sound on this one and it came out great, at least for me. i dont see it as his most ''dark'' record matter of fact i think that him wanting to experiment with new things just shows it was the time when he got his passion for music back after  mausberg death, label fuckin up ''non-ficion'' release and problems with arista (2000-2001). when he hooked back with dre it put him in more positive space away from all the bullshit. oh and uti was recorded in ny like he really wanted to get away from all negative shit that was going on at this time and clear his head

1. Safe + Sound - the Death Row sound is my favorite sound in hip hop history, and this is his most Death Row-sounding album, so put two and two together...

2. Quik is the Name - Really enjoyable, can be listened to straight through with no skipping, sounds a little dated these days, but has nostalgia going for it, is a little short, too

3. Rythmalism - A very colorful album, probably Quick's most trademark album as far as being able to use it to pinpoint what Quik's core sound is, the subject matter gets a little monotonous after awhile tbh

Honestly, the rest are a blur and I haven't listened to all his albums tbh.  I wouldn't say I'm a hardcore fan by any means, especially once you get deep into his career.  I'm from New Jersey, and his sound never truly translated over to the East.

Interesting about it bein recorded in New York .. Def has a less smooth feel to it than most his other work

if we're taking liberties with what constitues a quik album, then:
1. Rhythmalism
2. Safe and Sound
3. Balance and Options
4. Street Gospel
5. Under the Influence
6. Classic 220
7. Book of David
8. Blaqkout
9. Way 2 Funky
10. Trauma
11. Quik Is the Name
12. Second II None
13. Midnight Life (Fixxers version)
14. Midnight Life

strictly albums under quik's name:
1. Rhythmalism
2. Safe and Sound
3. Balance and Options
4. Under the Influence
5. Book of David
6. Way 2 Funky
7. Trauma
8. Quik Is the Name
9. Midnight Life

my top three can alternate depending on mood/time of day/season, but most often they end up in that order.  definitely think those albums are on a whole nother level; quik at his peak.  UTI is more remenicent sonically of those three albums than any of his others imo, hence it's high ranking.  i too find it interesting that quik doesn't think much of b&o.  he recently said in an interview that back when he was making the record, he saw it as an album where "nobody was watching," inferring he didn't put much effort into it and didn't think highly of it.  i couldn't disagree more.  midnight life would fit that category moreso than any other.  great thread btw  8)

Balance and options is my favorite quik album so I strongly disagree with him, always have....he gets too apprehensive and critical about his music I think he's better when he says fuck it and drops whatever he comes up with ✊🏼
