It's classic in a critical acclaim sense but I think it's overrated personally. It'd definitely better than anything Jay-Z has released though.

classic in the sense it chanced production in hip-hop, and that it was the best album between Makaveli and Stillmatic. Classic, no question, anyone who dissagrees should listen to the album.

i think we can call this a hiphop classic. I mean the sound of current hiphop is still being unfluenced from that record

It's definitely overrated - that album has a LOT of filler on it, from the skits to bullshit tracks like 'Ackrite' and 'Murder Ink'.

Here's my take - Jay-Z has made albums with less filler, but he's never made an album where the best tracks were as great as the classic cuts on Dre's.

I was personally let down by this album, I liked Streetz Iz A Mutha better which came out at the same time but Jayz also has alot of filler in his so called classic albums so I think it compares somewhat

Only the first half is dope, so it's not a classic to me.
IS DETOX NEXT? Don't think so.

Yeah that album is FAR from classic. It has some good production. Weak lyrics throughout. And not to menchion the radio played it out so much I can't even listen to it anymore. I got tired of hearing it. . .
Rest In Peace!

fuck the opinions of others. if he don't think it's classic, let him have his opinion, you have yours, it's all about taste. I hate those threads...

I'm actually amazed to see so many people here agreeing that 2001 isn't a classic. That's what's great about this board - people know enough about their West Coast shit to stand by their opinions. A lot of people would just automatically say this album was a classic because they think it's the 'right' answer - whoch, of course, for some people it is.

Props all round to those who say what they mean and stand by it. What an awesome board we have here.

I disagree. It has game-changing tracks on it (most of the first half is absolutely perfect). But taken as a whole product it is far from flawless. Most of the second half is average to me - if I play this album I'll probably skip most of the later tracks except Bitch Niggas and Bang Bang.
