G-Unit - Beg for Mercy review
« on: November 30, 2003, 08:40:58 PM »
1    G-Unit
Pretty dope for a intro, Hi-Tek laces the beat properly.
Young Buck comes off pretty dope, while 50 Cent sounds forced on this beat, with a 10-a-piece freestyle verse.
Banks comes off on the last verse with a nice verse.

4 of 5

2    Poppin' Them Thangs
Now we're talking.. Dr.Dre and Scott Storch recreate some of that "Still D.R.E." magic, with a pounding bassheavy beat, using guitars, violins and what sounds like a operasinger on the chorus, creating a magnificent backdrop for G-Unit to spit on.
It's almost impossible to make this beat sound bad, and they all come dope off on this, especially Banks & Buck comes off impressive on this, while 50 kills the chorus.
50's hookwriting skills is his biggest force, and that may make this one a big hit.
Classic track.

5 of 5

3    My Buddy
A dark eerie beat, provided by Thayod Ausar in co-op with Eminem and Luis Resto.
Excellent concept-track, talking indirectly and in 3'rd person, about their gunlove.
Sick metaphors all over, and the double meanings makes this track funny to listen to.
Once again, 50 kills the hook with a laidback chorus, and this might be a hit as well.
50 also drops a sick verse, a shame that he doesn't drop verses like this more often.

4.75 of 5

4    I'm So Hood
The first solotrack on the joint, 50 going for delf over a DJ Twinz beat.
Never been a Twinz-fan, and this beat is kinda monotone.
50 comes ok off, but the beat makes it pretty boring, and the hook is bland.
A skipper for me, but not totally wack.

3 of 5

5    Stunt 101
Maybe not a good choice for first single, but it's pretty catchy.
Kon Artis drops a funky beat, and bling-bling might be nothing new, but when done like this, I can't hate.
The chorus is cool, and the verses are pretty dope.

4 of 5

6    Wanna Get to Know You
This track doesn't fit the G-Unit image at all.
I didn't buy the album to listen to r'n'b(-hits)
It makes me wonder if they wanna crossover a little too much.
I don't mind r'n'b, but G-Unit shouldn't do it.
They all sound forced on this, but the track is obviously made for chicks, see 2Pac, Eminem, etc. for reference.

2.5 of 5

7    Groupie Love
This track would have been placed in the same category as the one above, but Butch Cassidy's funky crooning, and some coo verses make this a notch or two better.
And besides, the theme is better than #6, cuz the lyrics are harder than the bubblegum lyrics on the last track.
Yayo drops in for a verse as well on this.

3.5 of 5

8    Betta Ask Somebody
At first few listens, you get caught up in the monotone beat, thinking that it's a unfinished Dre-beat.
But once you listen to the lyrics/flows instead, the beat serves as a cool backdrop for some dope verses.
50 does a coo chorus, but Banks comes of best on this, while Buck is on some bling-bling shit. This is a funny line though:
"I probably robbed more artists than Russell" (Simmons)

4 of 5

9    Footprints
Pretty disappointing for a Nottz-beat, but the sample adds a cool feel to the track.
A Young Buck solotrack, Buck's verses isn't really impressive, but 50's hook and the sample makes it a ok track.

3.25 of 5

10    Eye for Eye
Laidback track, and a dope beat from Hi-Tek.
Cool verses, but Banks bridge is almost better than 50's chorus.
Somehow I feel that a Nate Dogg hook would be dope on this one, but the track is overall pretty good.

4.25 of 5

11    Smile
Solo Banks-track, but not really a concept I like.
There's been a whole bunch of solo tracks with Banks, better than this one.
I would rather have seen "What goes around" than this.
The track is pretty smooth, so for those who likes that type of music....

3.5 of 5

12    Baby U Got
Oh my, this is even worse than track 6.
I have no idea why this track made the final cut, other than some "smart" labelhead wanting G-Unit to crossover.
Horrible beat from Megahertz to make it even worse.
You'll probably skip this before Banks verse, but if you can hold out, Banks verse is pretty hot.
50 is best on hooks, but he can't save this one.

1 of 5

13    Salute U
Banks & Buck going at it without 50.
And they can do definately hold it down without him, cuz this track is nice.
7th Emp samples Bach, and the beat is cool backdrop for Banks & Bucks military concept.
Banks does the hook as he was 50.

4.25 of 5

14    Beg for Mercy
Black Jeruz provides a hot beat, even if it sounds like a trademark Dre-beat.
50 is sick on the chorus, and both Buck & Banks rip the mics, though 50's verse isn't up to par.
Hot track, but at 2:39, it's too short.

4.5 of 5

15    G'd Up
A dark grimey feel to this track, done by the Doc himself.
At first it sounds simple, but the magic guitars adds longevity to the track.
Sick guitars, and dope verses.. Buck might come off best on this, but Banks is close.

4.75 of 5

16    Lay You Down
Addictive beat by Khalil, and in combination with 50's hypnotic hook, it might make it a hit.
50 does a funny punch to haters from the West:

"I been out in L.A. with Dre and Snoop for so long
I finna cripwalk, and put some mofucking khakis on
Naww that's aight man, I got nuthin' to prove!
I'm rich, but I still live like I got nothing to lose"

Sick verses from all three on this one.
In combo with a sick beat and a sick chorus, it makes for a sick track.

4.5 of 5

17    Gangsta Shit
Original name for a track..
But it's dope none the less, much thanks to a hype beat originally meant for DMX's disstrack to Ja Rule.
50 starts off with a average chorus, but Bucks verse is impressive.
Banks sounds like he got a cold on this, making his verse sound a little strange.. maybe his voice got exhausted after all the touring.

4.25 of 5

18    I Smell Pussy
A underground favorite, going from a Murder Inc. disstrack to a "groupie love" kind of track.
Pretty funky shit, but it's not bangin'..
Yayo drops a cool verse on this, but Yayo never really got the chance to shine on this CD.

3.75 of 5

Overall:
A dope debut from a group that will be here for years, but the listener is left with mixed feelings.
Some tracks sounds like total garbage when compared to other tracks, making it a unconsistant debut.
If you're unfamiliar with the skip-button, then you might hit the stop-button to soon, cuz there's some gems on here.
At 18 tracks, the album feels too long, 14 tracks feels more suitable.
I'm not gonna let the 3-5 tracks count TOO much, because I'm pretty good with the skip-button, and the overall feel of this album is very solid.
Exchanging 50 & Sha Money as Executive Producers with Dr.Dre might be a smart move for their next effort.

I think this is w/o a doubt the best cut off the album. That's actually not necessarily because of G-Unit, but because of Joe's hook ;)

Wow, i gotta say this album pales in comparison to GRODT, whcih i thought was 4/5.  G unit album also lacks a single like In Da Club or anything close, and the filler tracks are HORRIBLE!!!!!!  About half the tracks are nice, thats it.  Of course, i know me and Jome have different tastes, way different so its all good.  BUt i cant trust a guy who argued with me tat Blueprint 2 was dope, and argued with me that Black Album is only average.  You really like this album better than TBA Jome?

G-units album is better than Dipsets, Dtp, and ST Lunatics, but not as good as d12....

Only ones I listen to are:
G'd Up
I Smell Pussy
Lay You Down
Salute U
Stunt 101

I finally listened to 50 when I was high about a week ago and damn, I love listening to his shit when I'm cooked. Other than that I never play his stuff anymore
It's 4:20, are you smoking?

I've probably been bumpin BFM a little too much, but it's pretty solid, imo..
I do agree that 4-5 of the tracks is downright wack though.

"Black Album" is still a letdown to me, but of course it's better than BP2, I think the discussion was that BP2 could have been really good if they kicked the fillers, and kept the bangers on 1 CD.

DTP, Dipset, d-12 and St.Lunatics are some horrible comparisons, group efforts or not..  :P

Release a G-Unit album with more Banks & Yayo, and less Buck & 50, and without the commercial bullshit tracks, and I think it could be really good..
Save 50 for the hooks, he got nothing more to talk about......

^^^gotta agree that need less 50 on the next g unit album but def not less buck, dude carried some of the joints himself....

50 needs to still do a verse, but g unit needs a chick......they got 4 niggas with yayo but the hooks sound boring on sum of the joints......now they need a chick to, someone who stands out, 50 stands out cuz of his style, but to much of him on a g unit album can get annoying and buck stands out cuz of his style, comin from south and mixing it with east, banks needs to sound abit mo alive, nigga sounds dead sometimes which kinda is anoyying and a chick woluld do nice for g-unit......a new cat though u get me........

i agree its pretty solid, but theres alot of wack tracks to.......

its a solid 3.75/5 album to me............

kinda reminds me of the snoop dogg allstars compilation, with some sick joints and some wack ones and the sound of the album.............with hi tek running the show production wise if u take out the dre joints..........

by the way, when u got a list of producers.......u have A Class producers.......and then B class.......and then ya wack ass niggaz

u know u got dre right at the top of the a class producers along with timbaland and neptunes......and now u got just blaze and kanye west joining this group to........specailly west, niggaz on fire at the moment......

then inbetween the A and B list u got rockwilder.......who seems abit lost at the moment, nigga was on fire a few years back but seems abit confused as to which direction he should be taking.....

and then when ya get lower down for cheaper beats.....the top of the B list producers who are just waiting to get into the A list are fredwreck but he aint gettin recognized all over, ....
and the other nigga be hi tek..........whos beats can range from great to average, but his consistant, like not always str8 bangers but his consistant makin him the numba one B list producer.......

and then ya got cats like kon artist whos slowly becomin a better producer but he doesnt producer enough to make him anymore than a middle rating b list producer......jus comes in for a joint or two....

so now with that..........beg for mercy should have had more hi tek, fredwreck, and def some rockwilder and a kayne west and a jus blaze joint.......it would have made the album alot mo sicker with the sound and more solid to imo......cuz u already got dre on their and i doubt niggaz would charge 50 and g unit to much for some rockwilder, mo hi tek and some fredwreck and a blaze and a west joint........cuz they gettin they name more out to......

but they decided not to and it kinda backfired on them.......

its a album with some dope joints on it........

"poppin them thangs"
"salute you"
eye for a eye
g up
gangsta shit - even tho fifty sounded like he pronounce the hook, me and my niggaz were smokin to this and we was jus in pure jokes over this.......and u got other sick joints to........but its jus a decent album, nothing worthy of 4 mics or anything......but its got sum joints worht bumpin.....

3.75/5

oh by the way, the eminem production on this album was boring as fuck, he co produced two joints and on the 1st one, it was jus his usaul shit he does u could tell, gun shots in the back ground and shit and on the other, it was even mo boring!.........nigga needs to realise he gotta step up...........i think he did though, thats why he workin hard at producin........he aint a cat who would lie to himself about his production skillz, he'll keep workin hard an get better
