The 50 Greatest Hip-hop Albums Ever - #49...
« on: April 19, 2005, 03:14:14 PM »
Outkast – Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik (1994)

Sign Of The Times: While the West Coast was catching a contact from The Chronic and the East was being introduced to the Wu-chambers, something magical swept up from the South.   They called themselves Outkast, two boys rocking flip flops with socks, riding on Vogues and slamming Caddilac doors.
Impact: While the group embraced their roots on wax, Outkast’s music greatly differed  from the songs synonymous with the South.   They didn’t come with the booty shake like Luke or gangsta tales like the Geto Boys; they captured listeners with poignant lyrics and an unorthodox flow, showing that niggas down South can rap.  The album’s sample-free production-unconventional at the time- implanted the Organized Noize sound in the ears of the masses.  The music was as dirty and country as the desolate Georgia back roads.  Outkast’s brand of southern fried funk smothered in Dre’s and Big Boi’s thick drawls was refreshing.
The Payoff: Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik gave a voice to the southern-player culture that was “fat like a herringbone and tight like a nap booty.”  The album proved that hip hop also lived outside of NYC and Compton.  To the music industry, the album’s platinum success opened a gateway to the South.

50. Dr. Dre - 2001 (1999)
49. Outkast - Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik (1994)

BTW, I'm not writing all these "reviews".  Some I'll write, some I'll copy and paste points I agree with from difference sources and others like this one from Blaze's "The 10 Defining CD's Of The '90s" I'll just straight copy.

2001 is top 5 all time.  If you can find 49 albums better, that is a joke

I'm enjoying this run-down already - props C2Knuckles.

This is another great album. I was thinking about it on the way to work this morning actually - listening to the track Andre does with Gwen Stefani on her album, it's amazing to see how he's developed as an artist.

first off, i would like to give C2Knuckles props for this idea and doing this shit

2nd, i would like to express my deepest condolences to his poor list, who is too young to die, in advance, as its continuation is prolly getting stifled by a bunch of people arguing over at least 46 of the 49 albums following the first not being better than 2001 (and trying to digest the vilification of BTNH)

3rd, Aquemini and ATLiens > The Chronic IMO, just to give C2K a lil bit of backup

4th, nicely written, props again

peace

ATLiens better than Chronic?
"One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree. "Which road do I take?" she asked. "Where do you want to go?" was his response. "I don't know," Alice answered. "Then," said the cat, "it doesn't matter."

ATLiens better than Chronic?

do you own/know any Parliament records? Hiphop is always eclecticism, but the Chronic tops a lot and ATLiens is very original for a hiphop album...plus it just sounds fuckin great
